GrandMasterBirt··on You win, RIM (An open letter to RIM's developer relations)
I feel that RIM is still missing the big picture. If RIM makes a phone/tablet that is 3x superior to the iPad and half the price, they'll still sell next to nothing.

Why? The answer is quite simple. Their software is shit. Their developer relations is shit. They are competing not vs hardware, but vs hardware + software.

They made great decisions too... lets ship the "Curve" model with such shit hardware and new software it was a downgrade from the previous top BB model (the one with side wheel). Old model = 3 seconds cold boot, new model = 3 minutes. The curve could not run any software that was remotely useful. It turned into a glorified email/phone device. The internet browsing sucked so bad I had no use for it. Not to mention that the hardware could barely handle the rendering.

So with good decisions like that, can you really expect any more out of RIM?

GrandMasterBirt··on Poll: Tech Bubble?
I don't think were in a "bubble"

Nobody is investing vast amounts of money into people with absolutely no business plan. Its not the "were gonna need 100 servers" only to realize there are 4 users... total. Services like AWS keep costs down allowing scalability on demand vs up front prep for doomsday.

I see groupon as a bubble in itself. But that is one business.

GrandMasterBirt··on Why Can’t Tablet Makers Just Freaking Ship?
When apple announced the iPad, it was near completion. Thats why it shipped soon. There was no pre-ipad were gonna make it but wont ship it till 5 yrs later release. That is the benefit of being first.
GrandMasterBirt··on Last.fm co-founder: Apple just fucked over online music subs for the iPhone
Sorry, you are wrong. The entire apple business model is about vendor lock-in. Only recently did iTunes remove DRM from their songs. The reason is because iTunes won. Apple used iTunes to lock people in by forcing them to use an iPod if they wanted their music which they "own" or rather "lease". Sure you were free to get ANY other mp3 player in the world, as long as you were ok with losing all your music.

The same here. Vendor lock in. You got ebooks from the cheapest store (iBook?) cool, iOS only, oh and a non-jailbroken one too.

Apple's history with the i... product line is content lock-in onto a device. They lure you in with pretty interfaces, then they hold your stuff hostage. Apple wants a piece of the pie, and they want to be able to undercut all competition. They know they can't ban kindle or face antitrust so they will do other things.

This is monopolizing pure and simple. It has nothing to do with apple making "enough" they want to make sure that they sell the cheapest stuff on the iOS, and they control where you can see the content - on the iOS - and if you leave you are fucked.

GrandMasterBirt··on Nokia Plan B fails after only 36 hours
Plan M is the superior one. I don't think you can top that one.
GrandMasterBirt··on A Stack Overflow user's reply to Experts Exchange blogpost
Dude, I still don't see why such a response is even needed.

a) EE is the reason people wanted to block sites from google results.

b) EE never has useful info even if you scroll down

conclusion: IDK how EE even made money to begin with. I guess on the suckers. Because I feel that if I sign up I am throwing my money away since nobody is else who I want answers from is dumb enough to sign up.

Furthermore, seeing as how forums are Q&A places as well, and sites scrub forums like mad to "generate content" I have zero proof that EE is in any way genuine content.

GrandMasterBirt··on U.S. Government Shuts Down 84,000 Websites, ‘By Mistake’
How about a better question: Why is this allowed in the united states? This is an absofuckingloutely clear violation of the due process in our constitution. Yes save the fucking children, but do it properly. We see the abuses that arise from improper giving of power. I guess people are waiting until basically we live in communist russia where you got to bribe cops to not give you speeding ticket, impound your car, and throw you in jail, because they felt like breaking some balls. And then you get to sit in a nice abusive prison cell for a few months awaiting trial.

Sure it sounds like paranoia, but the government will never turn to a giant powergrab overnight. It will always be gradual, slowly taking power until its too late.

GrandMasterBirt··on Apple is actually asking for 100% of SaaS mobile revenue
Now take that and move that to Amazon's domain. The currently offer insanely low prices. Selling each book with a 30% to apple can make their profit margin zero or less. Which means that either Amazon must raise prices on their products and thus giving Apple the ability to compete vs Amazon on price via unfair advantage or Amazon pulls out giving apple a monopoly. I don't think Microsoft ever made these sort of policies. Though granted MS never made an amazing platform.

On the flip side, apple created a platform. That platform is where apple wants a piece of the pie of every transaction period. Don't like it? Don't make apps for it. Nobody is holding a gun to any developer's head forcing them to make iPhone/iPad apps. If enough developers turn away, apple will react appropriately. So quit complaining and pull your apps from their store. "But that will hurt my profits" well then quit whining and just accept what apple has to give you. If enough great developers move to Android, and make insanely awesome android apps that everyone wants a piece of, then iOS has some major competition.

GrandMasterBirt··on Is IE9 a modern browser?
Jasmine tests to the rescue :)

They need to implement strict js mode in IE9. That mode really set some good rules on some weird js behaviors.

GrandMasterBirt··on Expert Exchange gets narky after snub from Q/A site review
The reason is super simple: Google demanded that if you index content on a page, that content must be freely accessible. You can't index what you don't show. EE made the hack to the layout. It was not always like that. I remember searching google help for ways to block domains (ee) from their results. Apparently that was the only reason anyone wanted to block domains :P
GrandMasterBirt··on Expert Exchange gets narky after snub from Q/A site review
Wait, forgot to mention that now that google created the chrome anti-google results plugin, expertsexchange is in trouble (missing hyphen there somewhere)
GrandMasterBirt··on Is IE9 a modern browser?
We need more than just a blog post, we need this out and about all over the interwebs.

Its absolutely true, and IE9 is now catching up to firefox 3.6 (finally) and ie10 will finally catch up to firefox 4.0 (maybe) in a year. AND the article forgot to mention that FIREFOX - ALL VERSIONS - WORK ON WINDOWS XP, VISTA, 7, MAC OSX, LINUX, UNIX. Which means that if you are a MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP user, you cannot use a Microsoft browser to freaken' browse the modern web, IE8 is the only hope. There is a lot wrong with the state of IE. And technology is only one of those things. Nothing but technology is being addressed though.

GrandMasterBirt··on Crysis (EA game) leak
Ok, let me make a nice analysis of responses about that post:

1) EA is obviously upset. They are asking people to wait to buy the game. This has two main reasons. The first being that the beta release is still buggy and will give a bad impression. The second being that they don't want people who would have otherwise bought the game get impatient and download it. Possibly seeing what a heap of crap it is.

2) EA did not bash the community. They just said "fans, please support us, piracy hurts our industry." Piracy of course referring to actually downloading and helping spread it. The response is basically "piracy is good, stfu, fuck off, you deserve it assholes". The response is completely blown out of proportion unless the OP was modified later on.

3) EA has nobody to blame but themselves. However they know this, and did not blame anyone else in the post. The responders seem to think otherwise.

4) I hate EA as much as the next buy, but lets be fair here.

That is all.

GrandMasterBirt··on This may be the best resume I have ever seen
Its nice, shows dedication. Earning a ton of college credits is not about just being smart, tons of dedication needed.
GrandMasterBirt··on This may be the best resume I have ever seen
Do resumes REALLY tell you anything? This is an incredible overview of the woman. She spent quite some time on making such a resume, much more interesting and easier to read than a regular resume, shows her skills off, gets the introduction, shows which tech shes worked with.

Everything needed is there. So vuala. I think this is great. You still need an interview to get details on projects. What else can you expect? A resume that removes the need for an interview?

GrandMasterBirt··on Cached OkCupid Article: Why You Should Never Pay For Online Dating
If you advertise that you lead to a marrige then its not about you getting married today, its that x people who use site y get married every day. Of course there is no garantee that the marrige had anything to do with the site. If person x and y are on a dating site, there is no reason to assume that it MUST be true that if x and y met/get merried it is due to the site. They could meet outside. With 20 million accounts it is VERY likely that you got married to someone with an account on that site.

I like the corelation you can build from the site: By giving you bad matches to increase business, each person looking gets less likely to find someone because they have to send so many emails. Note that the 30% chance to get a response * 1/30 chance that an account is not active != 1/100 chance of a response. The 30% chance to get a response can already take into account that a bunch of people may not be active.

You can play with the numbers. I think the final guesses are not that accurate, but it does put things into perspective regarding the marketing numbers.

I love this article, and I always loved OkCupid for their statistical analysis and myth debunking. I am very saddened that they had to join their competitor. O well.
GrandMasterBirt··on New Pricing Plan For Mozy
Is this just a more expensive dropbox?
GrandMasterBirt··on Windows 7: The Best iPad Seller
I disagree. Its more of a ferarri w/ manual transmition vs toyota prius. While you can do some good shit to break that ferarri, the prius can break, but its simple, just drive, just gas and break, no third pedal no thinking, simple small quiet. Oh you can't race it but thats ok you drive the speed limit anyways, gives you a nice rear-view camera so parking is a breeze, low gas usage, YAY! For the price of an ipad I can buy a windows box with specs an ipad can only dream of. For the price of an imac I can buy a machine with enough power to let it degrade in performance for 5 years and still not approach the imac's performance.

I think its not a shuttle vs car analogy. More of a GM vs Tesla analogy. GM is dying because they stick to the old "what works", "were too big to fail" approach, while tesla is sticking to "were more expensive, but we make a damn superior product"

GrandMasterBirt··on Windows 7: The Best iPad Seller
"ip" = iphone, ipad, ipod touch

Lets debunk a few problems with the article:

1) Why was there 3 antivirus tools installed. Generally its a bad idea.

2) OMG ANTIVIRUS S0X0RS! I WILL BUY L33T H4X OS THAT HAS NO VIRUSES! Get over it. Windows is the most popular consumer-grade os EVER to date. Exploits exist for it. Wait hold up, remember the ipod explot that roots your "ip" by going to a website and clicking a button which exploits a PDF reader problem? THAT GAVE YOU UNLIMITED ACCESS TO THE OS AND UNDERLYING EVERYTHING. It was used for good, could have been used for making your system a pure spambot using up your wireless data limits. Sorry dude, you suck.

3) The game maker no longer exists. So basically you are expecting a game that is very old to just work on any operating system that has a Windows in it's name without a compatibility upgrade especially when coming to Win 7 (a improvement on lots of cruft that was on xp). Maybe windows defender WAS right and the damn disk had a real virus on it, oh wait did you have a hacked copy? Try using old mac os (pre x) programs on osx. There will be issues. Shitty performance is a big one. I cannot play warcraft 2 on a ppc running 10.4 because it requires an old macos and does emulation, the hardware requirements for warcraft 2 is a 166mhz processor damnit. Ever hear of problems running new games on old versions of "ip"? Well sorry the market is so tightly controlled that you can't even install it on the "wrong" device. If the game existed for the "ip" and was not compatibly your article would have been "to play this game: turn on my ipad, jailbreak it, fuck up, brick, get a new one, jailbreak, install game, does not work, get pissed, damn you steve jobs! this is why balmer is l33t h4x0r" please see the flip perspective of this whole mess. If you tweak windows just right you can probably get this thing working. Worst case install XP mode that MS provides and get windows xp full compatibility WITH a sandbox so it can't hurt you. So windows actually wins in this one.

4) Windows updates... ah the age old story. Sorry dude, I had times when I spent 4 hrs upgrading windows in an office; they had not run windows update in 5 yrs. You gotta run this shit incrementally. Just connect once a month and let it simmer. You CHOSE to wait while it worked vs just letting it download and install when you are shutting the machine down. Notice you didn't follow the "measure twice, cut once" approach. You didn't try to see what is the problem with the game and look up to see the company not existing that probably its just incompatible crap, instead you chose to assume your approach of waiting for the update was the only good solution and the right one.

I always right-click drag executables to desktop, asks me what to do like create shortcut. It even gives you VISUAL hints as to what it wants to do while dragging. Yes it could be better like assume dragging a .exe/.bat file onto the desktop = create shortcuts (seriously MS, small bug, been how many years? and still not fixed)

EDIT: Sorry I missed the java update. There is no JVM on the ipad. You can't run java apps on it. The end. MS Does not control java, you chose to install it on your machine, deal with it. Don't want it, dont use java tools. Not to mention that you can redistribute the OpenJDK with your application as part of itself so there is no requirement to have java installed and running on your machine, it can just be packaged with say your game or application and just run without any update nagging. Not MS's fault.

I hate MS just as much as the next guy, but please put blame where blame belongs.

GrandMasterBirt··on Why 3D doesn't work and never will.
Except there are studies coming out about the harm to developing eyes and such. The point is that we're not meant for 3D. 3D though is a great way theaters try to "add value" to movies forcing us to pay more. Tangled was playing ONLY in 3D in theaters around me xept for like 1 showing. Guess which is the only showing I could take my daughter to. She would throw the glasses off in 15 minutes due to headache an thats the end of the movie for her. Was that worth an extra 10 bucks a ticket?

Like any new tech, makers want to convince us this tech is the way to go. So study more, and give us the old school alternatives.

GrandMasterBirt··on Dungeons & Dragons ruled a threat to prison security
I must upvote BUT here are some disputes to your claims:

"Its 2011 Are we really still making "nerds can't get laid" jokes?"

Honestly, from my experience try s/D&D/World of Warcraft. Yes people who play WoW get laid. Highschool kids who play WoW instead of building up real social skills don't get laid.

The thing though is the author's assertion is incorrect. Its pretty hard to not get laid as you get to college. I mean you have to be in a closet pretty much. Which is what can happen with WoW or D&D. However the only virgin I know of (and hell, people I thought would die virgins have proved me wrong) is a virgin because she just does not like most guys shes met, and is too shy to do anything about the ones she does. Nothing to do with games.

GrandMasterBirt··on DuckDuckGo Challenges Google on Privacy (With a Billboard in San Francisco)
When you click a link, you usually send the refferrer url to the site you go to. Naturally google's search terms are a very easy to parse and a well known url. So when you click a site's link they know that you came from google and that you searched for xyz.

Duck duck go actually redirects you in a way so that the referrer is not known to the site. They all think you came from duckduckgo.com. DDG also keeps no logs. Basically your own activity online cannot be used against you.

Now, privacy aside, I really like DDG for other reasons, like search relevance, continuous scrolling, zero-click info, etc. So its kind of win-win for me.
