GraffitiTim··on How a mathematician constructed a decision tree to solve a medical problem
This reminds me of those 20 Questions apps. Have you tried a good one lately? "Akinator" on iOS has an incredible ability to predict the person or character you're thinking of. It successfully guessed "one of the twins from The Shining" and "Calvin's dad from Calvin & Hobbes" when I played.

I can't imagine there are more possible diagnoses than there are fictional characters and famous people.

GraffitiTim··on My first app: Habit Streaks
You could make it free for up to 2 habits.
GraffitiTim··on Share: The Icon No One Agrees On
What do people think of an "Outgoing Speech Bubble" icon? Here's a quick mockup I just did:

GraffitiTim··on Bill Gates loses to Magnus Carlsen in 9 moves
If you mean the vertical line (horizontal from camera perspective) of squares with no pieces on it, that's called an open file, and it's an important concept in chess. Rooks on an open file are generally more powerful.
GraffitiTim··on Bill Gates loses to Magnus Carlsen in 9 moves
It means making knowingly inferior moves in order to set a trap that you are hoping your opponent will fall for (which Gates did). Normally not something serious chess players do, but I guess this is a weird situation.
GraffitiTim··on Bill Gates loses to Magnus Carlsen in 9 moves
That analysis looks fine except for the end.

At the end, Bill's 9. Nxe5 resulted in an immediate checkmate. Instead, 9. Re1 (Rook one square to the left) stops the mate since it gives white's king an escape route. In an even match, the game would be winning for white at that point because Magnus sacrificed a bishop for his now-failed attack.

Magnus screwed up big-time or was goofing around. He would still be able to beat Gates from that losing position, but I'm very surprised he let that happen.

GraffitiTim··on Evernote, the bug-ridden elephant
I've been an avid Evernote user since the beginning (one of the first few thousand users). I use it to record all sorts of ideas, thoughts, notes, reminders, research, and references.

One year ago, my girlfriend was using Evernote (on my suggestion) to write her travel journal on our trip to Southeast Asia. I saw her note sync a bunch of times (the iOS app shows a little blue arrow when it's uploading). But one day she opened it and the note was gone. I contacted support but they couldn't do anything. (They offered her a year of free Premium service and "apologized for the inconvenience".)

Since then, I've stopped recommending it to people because I don't want to feel personally responsible if they lose notes too. I also have a tinge of doubt every time I record important information. My biggest worry is Evernote quietly losing a note, because once I record something in Evernote I typically push it from my internal memory.

On top of that, their iOS app is incredibly slow. When I want to quickly jot an idea down, it's very inconvenient.

I've started using SimpleNote lately, which is far faster, but I don't know to what extent I should trust it to keep my data safely.

GraffitiTim··on Into the Bitcoin Mines
Primecoin is designed to search for prime numbers, which is at least somewhat useful.

Ripple Labs is giving away Ripple (XRP) for donating your computing power to solving scientific problems at https://www.computingforgood.org/.

GraffitiTim··on 23andme has suspended health-related genetic tests
Since they're still going to provide the data to new users, I wonder if some of their interpretations could be recreated and published by existing users who still have access to the interpretations.
GraffitiTim··on How to Get Good at Chess, Fast
This is similar to how I learned and how I teach beginning chess players. Good set of recommendations.
GraffitiTim··on Carlsen wins game 9, only needs 1 draw in 3 remaining games
When did he say that? I couldn't find a source.
GraffitiTim··on The API-ization of everything
I meant in the context of trying to build a long-term business. Netflix would be dead in a few more years if they hadn't started doing digital streaming.
GraffitiTim··on The Bitcoin Bubble
Here's a chart of the number of transactions excluding the 100 most popular addresses, which seem to be mostly the gambling service SatoshiDice [1]:

https://blockchain.info/charts/n-transactions-excluding-popu...

So could it be that SatoshiDice transactions have dropped a lot (flattening the overall graph) but other transactions have been increasing?

GraffitiTim··on The API-ization of everything
I agree with the premise. However, what happens to Lob when paper and mail get replaced by digital transactions? Netflix was able to pivot from sending physical DVDs to streaming digital movies. Will Lob be able to pivot from printing and mailing physical checks to sending digital money, or will they be cut out of the market?

In general, it seems risky to build an API around something that's going to disappear.

GraffitiTim··on f.lux has been updated to a new version
If you find yourself not able to fall asleep until later than you'd like, I recommend trying the warmer flux setting. I've been using RedScreen + a little script I wrote instead of flux because it gets far redder, and for me works far better.

It looks like flux still only goes down to 2200 on Mac, so I may continue using RedScreen.

GraffitiTim··on Tesla Model X
At the shareholder meeting a couple months ago, Elon Musk said the gullwing doors will have proximity and pinch sensors to prevent them from hitting anything. I don't know for sure if he was referring to the first version of Model X, but it seemed like it.
GraffitiTim··on Effective companies share – Inc is built for them
HipChat integration doesn't seem to be saving for me. I pasted in a Notification auth token that I generated (which caused a green checkmark to appear), and wrote in the ID of one of our HipChat rooms, but it doesn't seem to save the ID (if I leave settings and come back, both fields are empty).
GraffitiTim··on Instacart (YC S12) is now not just easier, but cheaper
I tried it out today and it worked great. They call it "Instacart Plus" and it shows up as one of the store options in the dropdown menu, along with Trader Joe's, Costco, etc. The delivery arrived at 1:00pm sharp for the 1-2pm scheduled delivery window.
GraffitiTim··on Buildy, a real-time HTML5 building game - come build in our biggest world yet
We may at least do a couple write-ups about some of the tech behind it.
GraffitiTim··on Buildy, a real-time HTML5 building game - come build in our biggest world yet
Just untested. It may work in IE9 and IE10.
GraffitiTim··on Show HN: WordCount.is
You're thinking of calculating touch typing speed in WPM, where the standard is to consider a "word" to be 5 characters.
GraffitiTim··on VirtualBox broken on Ivy Bridge Macbooks after 10.8.2 and Firmware Update
From vbox forums, someone at Oracle:

"That said, I believe we're now far enough along to say that there will highly likely be at least a test build pretty soon. Certainly sooner than in two weeks..."

GraffitiTim··on Chess Archives on YouTube
That video is incredibly frustrating. They keep switching the camera away from the board so you have no idea what's going on.

In the case of Exec, one simple feature (submitting a task) lets you accomplish a huge number of different things.
GraffitiTim··on Justin Kan Launches Exec (YC W12) For Real-Time Mobile Jobs
I've tried using Exec and it worked flawlessly.
GraffitiTim··on What Will Replace The Internet? (2000)
I wonder what the most accurate current 20 year prediction of technology is. Anyone want to hazard an attempt?
GraffitiTim··on Social Ridesharing Startup Ridejoy (YC S11) Raises $1.3M

GraffitiTim··on The highest-rated products on Amazon.
Part of the point of Topazon is to make it easier to buy something like headphones without having to do research or compare different products if you don't want to. To most people, displaying the specific name and model of the headphones wouldn't mean anything.

Nothing is intentionally obfuscated. The summaries are combinations of direct quotes, paraphrased quotes, and editorial summaries based on the reviews. In the case of the HDMI cable, if I remember rightly, the fact that it was cheap and worked perfectly compared to more expensive cables was a common theme in the reviews.

GraffitiTim··on The highest-rated products on Amazon.
Yeah, redditors seem to be particularly interested in the site, so the ads there have been working out even though the site doesn't make a ton of money per visitor.
