GordonS··on Allow babywearing carriers on planes
Even then... is "baby carrier" an American term? Are we talking about slings or car seats or something else?
GordonS··on JetBrains Air: A System of Products for Agentic Software Development
Ah. I don't rate how JetBrains have gone about it. It feels like things have moved around a lot, and it seems too complicated, with too many AI "thingies" sprinkled around without much explanation. And the inline, auto-suggested change can vary from "useful, please do that", to "will you stop flashing up all this shit everywhere I look!".

For a while I used Junie for small refactorings, and it generally does a good job, quite quickly. A couple of times I tried asking it for more complex things, and it didn't do well. I do find the UI to be a bit tricky, so it's quite possible I did something wrong or didn't add something to the context I was supposed to. Hopefully they sort out the "AI Chat" panel soon.

But now I use Codex/ChatGPT... and what it can do is frankly incredible. And it might just be me, but I do like having my AI chat UI completely separate from my IDE.

GordonS··on JetBrains Air: A System of Products for Agentic Software Development
I like a completely separate tool for managing databases.

I use Rider and DataGrip regularly. I also use WriterCide,

DataGrip is seriously under-rated, IMO.

GordonS··on Iran school bombing: grounds to believe US was behind atrocity, UN finds
Come on, this is really laying it on thick! I'd like to see some pretty strong evidence of that almost comically over-the-top list you open with.
GordonS··on Wiped out: US faces surging toilet paper prices amid trade war with Canada
So, I've only used a bidet a few times while on holiday, and I did prefer it to just TP... but I don't understand how I could possibly dry that much water with a single square of tissue-thin toilet paper - paper that is specifically designed to come apart when wet?!
GordonS··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
Eh... The full quote is even worse, making it plain he's talking about everyone in Gaza:

“I think targeted assassinations should be carried out in Gaza, taking down 30 to 40 every night. Not just those who pose an immediate threat – there are people there who are not worthy of life. They shouldn’t live. They’re not even people.”

It's absolutely plain as day that Ben Gvir is genocidal.

Bots pushing fake propaganda indeed!

GordonS··on Lost my phone at the office. Claude suggested tracking Bluetooth signal strength
Which Android app would you recommend?
GordonS··on 1,741 "informed" consents with one click? GDPR complaint filed
It does exist, but the allowable use cases that third parties can claim "legitimate interest" for need to be severely restricted. At present, it's a joke - a single site can have dozens or even hundreds of companies claiming "legitimate" interests, but which are anything but legitimate.
GordonS··on Darktable
Looks interesting - does it have better library management than DarkTable?
GordonS··on Xiaomi-Robotics-1
There tends to be a lot of low-key (and some not-so-low-key) anti-Chinese xenophobia on HN, so that's likely a big part of it too.
GordonS··on Show HN: I've built a words game based on binary search
I really like this, it kind of reminds me of "Hangman"!

A few ideas, if you don't mind:

1. Have a "normal" mode and "master" mode, where the normal mode has words with maybe 5 letters and the master mode uses 7 letters

2. Have an archive of previous games - kinda sucks that I can't play the old ones!

3. Contrast on the up/down arrows on letters isn't clear enough, at least not for me (colour blind)

GordonS··on Sleep regularity is a stronger predictor of mortality risk than sleep duration (2023)
Magnesium citrate works well for constipation, IME.
GordonS··on Show HN: 18 Words
The Zanagrams game, which AFACK is from the same developer (?), actually does this - it counts up like a stopwatch, then compares your time to the global average at the end.

I much prefer this way, personally at least.

GordonS··on FDA rejects petition to set PFAS limits in food
But does it have to be one or the other? Or is there some possibility of somehow removing the PFAS from donated blood?
GordonS··on Supersonic flight returning to US after half-century ban
Back in the 80's the British air force would fly ridiculously low over the rural village I grew up in, certainly lower than they were meant to be allowed to - everyone hated it. You'd be minding your own business and then just about shit yourself out of nowhere!
GordonS··on Since Linux 6.9, LUKS suspend stopped wiping disk-encryption keys from memory
If you're really serious, you use a strong password, not a PIN.
GordonS··on Building a custom octocopter from scratch with no prior hardware experience
I guess it's a play on the popular word "quadcopter", rather than "helicopter".
GordonS··on 1.38 Millimeter Microcontroller
Have you blogged about the earrings perchance? They really do look great, and I'd love to see some details of your process.
GordonS··on Mechanical Watch (2022)
Ooh, that is a nice quartz watch! Really good review here: https://www.peterferenczi.com/blog/2023/3/19/the-casio-ocean...
GordonS··on Mechanical Watch (2022)
Those look really nice (love the moon phase indicator that some of them have too!), but the "red star" motif on the watch face does put me off.
GordonS··on Windows 11 users are tired of MS account requirements creeping into everything
I just installed Bazzite-DX, and have been really surprised with how easy it was to install, and how well everything "just works". It even tells me when my wireless keyboard batteries are running out, something Windows couldn't do without running proprietary Logitech software.
GordonS··on Win16 Memory Management
We struggled to get our son into reading too, but he took straight away to comics, and from there he had a long stint with graphic novels (e.g. Percy Jackson, Artemis Fowl). You can get more mature graphic novels as they mature and progress, e.g. City of Dragons. And eventually he picked up an Alex Rider book, and hasn't stopped since. He's now how I remember myself as a kid - nose stuck in a book, completely engrossed!
GordonS··on Win16 Memory Management
I've been wondering about this lately. As a kid, I spent hour upon hour learning about computing: typing in Basic code from a magazine into a Commodore 64, playing with music on an Atari STe, learning my way around a DOS command line, dabbling with 3D modelling... just so much stuff that my own kids would never have the patience for.

I wonder if it's just that kids today (gods that makes me sound old!) are constantly surrounded by entertaining things to do - gaming, TV/films, music, social media.

GordonS··on Show HN: Helios – what plug-in solar could generate for any address in Britain
This is really nice! Would be great if it could handle regular rooftop solar calculations too.
GordonS··on Neutron scattering explains why gluten-free pasta falls apart (2025)
Rummo is pretty good, but you have to cook it just right - a minute either side, and it's either grainy or falls apart as a soggy mess.

Still, gluten-free pasta has come a long way.

GordonS··on I moved my digital stack to Europe
Huh, I'd swear earlier today that page didn't have any actual prices on it, but it clearly does now, thanks.
GordonS··on I moved my digital stack to Europe
> looking at Civo.com for UK presence

Hadn't come across Civo. They advertise "transparent" pricing, but I can't seem to find prices for VMs... or anything else!

Maybe it's just me, but do you have a link to a pricing page perchance?

GordonS··on I tracked 7,700 UK petrol stations every 10 minutes for 3 months
Those tiny b1ms VMs are absolutely pitiful (long time Azure sufferer here). It's crazy how little compute and memory Azure give you for so much money.
GordonS··on DeepSeek v4
For asking questions, on Hacker News?

I think not.
