GoodIntentions··on Cell Phone Guide For US Protesters, Updated 2014 Edition
1968: Get busted at protest, get searched for weed. 2014: Get busted at protest, get searched for data.

We're living in odd times.

GoodIntentions··on Count to ten when a plane goes down
IMHO, firing someone who owns up to a keystroke mistake like that is wrong. Good managers fix the problem, weak managers fix blame.

Root cause analysis + countermeasure might have boiled down to "operator error due to shitty interface" + "we will tape a guard over F7 key, since it will never ever get fixed in software"

GoodIntentions··on Retraction of 60 articles implicated in a peer review and citation ring
May I suggest Elbonia for such uses?

GoodIntentions··on Amazon granted patent for taking photos against a white background
It took me more years working than it should have to realize this: If someone consistently does a poor job, look up. They aren't the problem.
GoodIntentions··on DigitalOcean Indicator
I have had good luck with Toshiba satellites. Running Debian on a P750 currently. This is my second Toshiba with linux, don't have any issues.
GoodIntentions··on LA Sheriffs launch a surveillance app that uses your photos and videos
"All they think about is the Spies, and the war, of course. D'you know what that little girl of mine did last Saturday, when her troop was on a hike out Berkhamsted way? She got two other girls to go with her, slipped off from the hike, and spent the whole afternoon following a strange man. They kept on his tail for two hours, right through the woods, and then, when they got into Amersham, handed him over to the patrols.'

'What did they do that for?' said Winston, somewhat taken aback. Parsons went on triumphantly:

'My kid was sure he was some kind of enemy agent -- might have been dropped by parachute, for instance. But here's the point, old boy. What do you think put her on to him in the first place? She spotted he was wearing a funny kind of shoes -- said she'd never seen anyone wearing shoes like that before. So the chances were he was a foreigner. Pretty smart for a nipper of seven, eh?'"

This app should make it _much_ easier to spot people with strange shoes.

GoodIntentions··on The Neo900 project is still alive and steadily progressing
>> but for the rest, stop complaining and find a place to sit down with your laptop.

Exactly that. I carry an n900 as my daily use phone/pda and it works great as a "better-than-nothing" device for ssh access/websurfing. Its' strength is that I have it 24/7 not that it is as good as a desktop/laptop.

I'm looking forward to the neo. I'd like it to be faster, yes. but that requirement is way down the list.

GoodIntentions··on Ukraine Mobilizes After Putin's 'Declaration of War'
I don't think they want all of Ukraine, just the Crimean peninsula. Socially and geographically, this is a different situation than Georgia, where ethic Russians are a small minority and the borders are large as opposed to a relatively small choke point on the peninsula.

I think they will pull this off unless massive international pressure comes to bear on Russia AND they decide give a damn about how the world feels.

GoodIntentions··on Ukraine Mobilizes After Putin's 'Declaration of War'
The oldest rule in the world:

http://www.dict.cc/german-english/Faustrecht.html

Doesn't make it right, but we're about to see it in action.

GoodIntentions··on How Google Nuked Sports Media Watch For A Crime It Did Not Commit
I saw this technique proposed on a webmaster's forum many years ago. If google hasn't given some thought to detecting this type of manipulation, I'd be surprised. If they've actually figured out how to reliably detect and discount it, I'd be doubly surprised.
GoodIntentions··on We Need Viable Search Engine Competition
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogpile

I haven't used dogpile in forever - actually thought they were defunct, but your comment brought it to mind. Seems like what you're after?

GoodIntentions··on Further improving digital certificate security
So who's gonna run this anarchy thing?
GoodIntentions··on How the ’60s Counterculture Is Still Driving the Tech Revolution
The difference being in my mind that I won't turn to an article in Britannica and find it randomly defaced, or deliberately seeded with biased information. Wikipedia is awesome, but gotta use it as a jumping off point to find references to "real" sources for anything that _must_ be right.
GoodIntentions··on New antibiotic kills off persistent infections
Pretty much exactly what I was going to post. Prophylactic use of antibiotics in hogs/whatever is stupidity in a class of its' own, selectively breeding organisms on an industrial scale for resistance to the drugs we might want to use to keep us alive.
GoodIntentions··on Philip Hensher stirs debate among authors after refusing to write for free
Not sure how noteworthy this is. Ask any of us to work for free and you might get the same answer.
GoodIntentions··on Why Microsoft Word must die
>> "Most businesses wouldn't bother having a cafeteria if only Excel could cook meals."

This part is tongue in cheek, but true. There are businesses out there, where excel is used for everything, including many things it should never be used for. Seriously powerful app. Seriously (ab)used.

I don't hate Excel, but I hate the "craplications" hare-brained power users create.

GoodIntentions··on Hipster Ipsum: Artisanal filler text for your site or project.
"selfies cornhole messenger bag"

Seems about right.

GoodIntentions··on Lavabit SSL Cert Revoked
"Paranoia strikes deep

Into your life it will creep

It starts when you're always afraid

You step out of line, the man come and take you away"

Buffalo Springfield, "for What it's Worth" 1966.

Timeless tune, not written about internet surveillance obviously. Recently that I find that song, and that line in particular coming to mind

linkage if you want a listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gp5JCrSXkJY

GoodIntentions··on Fix 260 character file name length limitation: Declined
perhaps someone has posted it, but I don't see it here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subst

Gotta really stupid-long base path? alias it.

GoodIntentions··on GCHQ report on 'Mullenize' program to 'stain' anonymous electronic traffic

GoodIntentions··on N.S.A. Examines Social Networks of U.S. Citizens
May I suggest replacing "un-American" with "doubleplusungood"?
GoodIntentions··on Switch to HTTPS Now, For Free
Ya Think?

"Self-signed certs as a service! IN THE CLOUD! Need Support for your self-signed cert? 5k/year - 1 (800) 555 - 5549"

I wonder if they have an affiliate program

GoodIntentions··on Ask HN: Nepal's ccTLD registrar won't let devs update nameservers. What to do?
That must have changed?

http://nic.ro/payments/

looks like 17 Euro/yr with breaks on longer terms

EDIT: I went to the English site tho, not rotld.ro - perhaps residents only get the better deal?

GoodIntentions··on Diablo 3 to permanently remove its auction houses in March 2014
>> it powers all Blizzard games

I could see that forcing a proper test cycle to take longer than implementing a change.

GoodIntentions··on Report Suggests Nearly Half of U.S. Jobs Are Vulnerable to Computerization
War.. Most of the time I have been alive, the U.S. has almost had a military engagement someplace. What percentage of middle class' taxes are fed to the for-profit machine that in turn feeds the military?

War serves another purpose, too - wealth transfer, and that helps keep the work week at 40 hours.

GoodIntentions··on Boxee Forums Hacked, Boxee Devices Offline
mikeknoop: no offense, but pacing a direct link to a compromised site isn't good. these types of posts should link to a screenshot.
GoodIntentions··on Snowden Disclosures Finally Hit 12 on a Scale of 1 to 10
Not really a challenge. This is how I explained it to my non-technical father years ago:

"Nothing you do online is anonymous. There is a record of everything you do."

He understood it right away and ( I think ) has always treated everything online as public. No need to go into any technical details.

GoodIntentions··on We may get fired and I don't know what to do
>>an assembly line worker who knows how to operte the tool in hand.

This is one problem imho, that stands in the way of more mature developers landing jobs and of juniors advancing. There is a trend to use 3rd party libraries as rad tools even when they don't fully fill the needs, and a tendency to use 3rd party tools to prevent your coders from really needing to code.

Architects know they're going to hand off to code monkeys, so they force designs to fit existing 3rd party libraries and any complexity gets pushed to the design side, not the implementation side. Why hire and pay extra for experience when a grad can do it?

GoodIntentions··on Microsoft Retiring Master Certifications And Training
I've worked with really good, skilled and really not so skilled people that held Microsoft certs. The folks that were not worth a shit on the job all seemed to list MS certs in their email sigs.

Right or wrong, I take those mc* email sigs as a negative signal every time I see them.

GoodIntentions··on Gnome's Web Browser Ditches Google For DuckDuckGo
I don't think it was _terrible_.

It just doesn't give as accurate results as Google in some searches, I assume due to the rafts of information collected about users - a trade off I will make happily.
