GiorgioG··on US confirms for first time it has deployed space weapons
> Space really should be a neutral ground like Antarctica.

That's cute that you think that. The reality is you can't do less than your adversaries may/will/are doing.

GiorgioG··on Anthropic tells investors it will be profitable for second straight quarter
This is Enron-level fraud. What would Ford/GM/Toyota's gross margins be without the cost of manufacturing vehicles?
GiorgioG··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
The day they force me (an existing user) on this is the day I switch to another service. It's been shown time and time again that companies do not secure any of our information.
GiorgioG··on Finder is so frustrating and has been since day one
It wasn't in 2007.
GiorgioG··on Flock Wants a Closely Surveilled World with No Exit
No, no compromises.
GiorgioG··on Finder is so frustrating and has been since day one
He’s complaining…because he sells a solution to this problem. I hated Finder when I switched to Mac back in 2007. So much so I bought PathFinder. One thing that pissed me off and still does, is when I copy over a folder with the same name, it doesn’t merge the contents, it deletes everything in the existing folder. That’s not what I expected as a Windows user and it still seems like the wrong behavior almost 20 years later. I no longer use PathFinder, it had its own problems and bugs…but in general I find Finder pretty lacking.
GiorgioG··on Flock used >100 times to track veteran who recorded traffic stop
Flock is the most successful and well-known company doing this, however they’re not the only one. We need to be really careful to push back against the use of this technology as a whole and not fixate only on Flock. My town doesn’t use Flock, it uses another company’s tech…it’s no better! Don’t give the politicians an out.
GiorgioG··on My life was changed by four sentences in four books
Seems a bit hyperbolic.
GiorgioG··on Nvidia projects $673B in sales as AI demand widens
> The market for this is HUGE.

GiorgioG··on Coding expertise is going to collapse from AI reliance
Robert Martin has caused me so much frustration over the years, but he's spot on. "Young people with power tools tend to lose fingers"...I like that!
GiorgioG··on Coding expertise is going to collapse from AI reliance
I learned BASIC, Pascal and x86 Assembly language by the age of 14-15. None of which I remember (nor care to). The strict instructions (aka language) we gave the compiler was not the point. Those experiences taught me how to think logically, and over time develop a taste/structure for how software should be built, as well as foot guns to avoid. I don't know how you teach that without coding, but the "coding expertise" was always a means to an end. LLMs are just another abstraction layer above programming languages, machine language, etc.
GiorgioG··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
Anyone that is surprised by this or somehow thinks this is new clearly hasn't crossed the border a whole lot. I grew up in a city along the US/Canada border. You don't fuck around with US Customs (or Canadian) agents. My cousin (not always so friendly) pissed off a US Customs agent (in the 90s mind you) and they promptly took his car and disassembled much of it looking for non-existent drugs. When they put it back together it was never the same. Their job is to be suspicious, 99.999% of the time people are completely innocent. But let 1 bad person through and it's Customs' fault for whatever bad thing they do. Not an easy job. Not an excuse for how they can misbehave either.

Is it right? It makes no difference, Customs can make your life miserable, that's just the reality of it, always has been and it can't have gotten better in recent times.

GiorgioG··on US debt has hit $40tn - Will that be a wake-up call?
There are no adults left in the room.
GiorgioG··on Ask HN: Which developer tool got worse as it became popular?
100x this.
GiorgioG··on Sticky wage norms and the real wage cost of unexpected inflation
I feel like people are blind to the obvious. The price of everything has gone up and it has outpaced most people’s wages.
GiorgioG··on New paper shows that 37% of workers in US saw real wages decline from 2021-2024 [pdf]
About fucking time someone called bullshit.
GiorgioG··on An update on leaving Gmail for Fastmail
I moved to Fastmail from gmail a few years ago. I'm thrilled to not have Google searching my primary email address any longer. I still use gmail for SSO for a lot of things from my 'gmail.com' account.
GiorgioG··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
Politicians don’t care about your kids, they only care about your vote.
GiorgioG··on Managing AI Coding Costs at Scale
Too bad their AI query generation is next to useless.
GiorgioG··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
The US gives no shits about 'bad people'. There are plenty of bad people in other parts of the world - the oil is all that matters to us in the Middle-East.
GiorgioG··on All of Winona Police Department's Flock cameras cut down and stolen
Does it matter? It's stored. If you have the data it can be misused.
GiorgioG··on All of Winona Police Department's Flock cameras cut down and stolen
Fuck Flock and any other mass surveillance company.
GiorgioG··on Microsoft raises Xbox prices by up to 43%
Xbox is in complete disarray and is imploding. I haven’t owned a PlayStation in decades. If my son’s Xbox Series X (the worst naming ever) suddenly dies, we’ll either switch to PlayStation or build a PC.
GiorgioG··on Apple Will 'Watch Everything Burn' When the AI Bubble Bursts
Cell phones may be commodities, but iPhones are not.
GiorgioG··on OpenAI and Anthropic unite against open-weight AI risks to their bottom line
Capitalism creates never satiated hunger for more profits at almost any cost (even human life...see health insurance, but that's another discussion).
GiorgioG··on OpenAI and Anthropic unite against open-weight AI risks to their bottom line
Anyone who thinks these companies ever cared about any of that is naive.
GiorgioG··on “We have information that Moonshot distilled Fable for the development of K3”
I don't even understand this fucking AI "arms race" at all. Who can burn money the fastest?
GiorgioG··on Is this the end of the once-mighty GoPro?
So we Americans love our kickass flag…so what? It wasn’t until relatively recent times that it became intertwined with whatever the fuck our current president stands for (for the next 12 seconds).

I’ve had a US flag up on my house for the past 15 years. This country has been good to the son of European immigrants. It’s far from perfect but I love my country. Meanwhile my European cousins, aunts and uncles are scraping by.

GiorgioG··on EU Parliament greenlights Chat Control 1.0
So 112 MEPs didn't do their job...got it.
GiorgioG··on PgDog is funded and coming to a database near you
For a vast majority of use cases 20TB is positively enormous.
