GiorgioG··on Confessions of a Software Developer: No More Self-Censorship
I’ve worked remote for at least 16 of the past 22 years including my first job out college. It’s always been friggin awesome. The only downside was when I was contracting and I’d get calls in the middle of dinner and I didn’t have the self-discipline to ignore the call. A few times a year I have to travel to work, it’s nice to see folks, but it’s not required to get the work done, I put my big boy pants on and figure it out, or ask for help when I can’t.
GiorgioG··on Ask HN: Are AI coding agents becoming more stupid?
Were they intelligent to begin with?
GiorgioG··on Agent design is still hard
Despite the latest and greatest models…I still see glaring logic errors in the code produced in anything beyond basic CRUD apps. They still make up fields that don’t exist, assign a value to a variable that is nonsensical. I’ll give you an example, in the code in question, Codex assigned a required field LoanAmount to a value from a variable called assessedFeeAmount…simply because as far as I can tell, it had no idea how to get the correct value from the current function/class.
GiorgioG··on NTSB Preliminary Report – UPS Boeing MD-11F Crash [pdf]
It's just time to kill the MD-11 entirely. These 3-engine aircraft are too risky to continue flying.

GiorgioG··on Quest for Permissively Licensed PDF Library in C#
YakPDF (as far as I can tell) is an API and not a library that generates a PDF. If you're going to go that route, host https://github.com/gotenberg/gotenberg yourself and call it a day.

edit: Stop spamming your own service.

GiorgioG··on .NET 10
Congratulations, you worked at a huge company. Nothing to do with the tech stack.
GiorgioG··on .NET 10
Not that rare, I work in one now and we use: .NET, Mongo, Postgres, SQL Server, Node, Python, etc.
GiorgioG··on .NET 10
Just say you don't want to use .NET. It's fine, but how many startups ever get to over 10k containers? You can use AOT to further reduce the footprint. It's totally fine to hate Microsoft, but this is as weak an argument as I've ever seen.
GiorgioG··on .NET 10
Recommended by whom? I've been doing .NET for 23 years (since the first beta) and I've never paid for a single library in any commercial project I've been part of.

Congress is still supposed to do its job.
GiorgioG··on NoLongerEvil-Thermostat – Nest Generation 1 and 2 Firmware
I certainly didn't see this coming in 2014 when I paid $800+ and installed them. If they'd have said hey $5/year for each to keep them going, I'd have begrudgingly paid it and carried on...but now, Google will never get a dime from me again.
GiorgioG··on NoLongerEvil-Thermostat – Nest Generation 1 and 2 Firmware
I can't express how much damage Google has done to its reputation in my mind with how they EOL'd the online functionality of these devices. I have 3 of them. I will never buy a Google device of any kind ever again.

GiorgioG··on Amazon says it didn't cut people because of money. But because of 'culture'
I don't necessarily need an electric place to work. Smart people and a boring mission/tech stack is fine. I just think their layoff(s) in disguise when they forced everyone to RTO is/was a slap in the face. Instant, permanent loss of trust.
GiorgioG··on Amazon says it didn't cut people because of money. But because of 'culture'
Best decision I ever made was repeatedly ignoring emails from Amazon recruiters while they were allowing remote work around the pandemic. Fuck that place.

Mongodb used to suck. We use it at work for critical systems, it’s been rock solid for 3+ years.

GiorgioG··on $30 a month for Ultimate – I don't think Game Pass is worth it anymore
I've just gotten the email and downgraded to the Essential plan for online Xbox gaming...which I'm not 100% sure I still need. Seems silly and short-sighted on Microsoft's part.
GiorgioG··on JetBrains will start training AI on your code on non-commercial license
free users get the same value as paying customers...JetBrains can do as they please to get some value out of these users. Don't like it, pay up...I'm a long time JetBrains customer (since 2005). I've never asked my employer to pay for my licenses because their tools make me a better developer than any other options on the market.

GiorgioG··on Nest 1st gen and 2nd gen thermostats no longer supported from Oct 25
> Are you willing to pay for the true cost of maintaining these devices for ~50 years?

Sounds like Nest/Google didn’t think about that when they priced their products. That’s not the consumer’s fault. I’ve been de-Google-ing myself over the past couple of years and this is the final nail in the coffin. They could have given a partial refund, instead they insult customers with a “discount”.

GiorgioG··on Nest 1st gen and 2nd gen thermostats no longer supported from Oct 25
As someone who bought 3 of these for $300 a pop I vehemently disagree. This is complete bullshit and anti-consumer behavior that should be illegal.
GiorgioG··on Nest 1st gen and 2nd gen thermostats no longer supported from Oct 25
Google have the gaul to "offer" their newer devices at a discount - yes I want to pay you again for something I've already paid for...trusting that you don't this again in 10 years. I have 3 of these devices.

Fuck you Google.
