Gibbon1··on High Diesel Prices Bankrupted 16 Trucking Companies in Just 30 Days
The Santa Clara HWY 85 extension because it was built without federal funds was able to totally ban trucks over 4 tons and 30 years later is in decent condition. It was also built lighter and thus cheaper to build.
Gibbon1··on High Diesel Prices Bankrupted 16 Trucking Companies in Just 30 Days
I could go outside right now and bang pots together and wake up more people than live in Aniak.
Gibbon1··on High Diesel Prices Bankrupted 16 Trucking Companies in Just 30 Days
Discussion about this I heard 50 years ago is the alternative to trucks tends to be rail. The real unfairness is railroads have to pay to maintain their infrastructure while trucks do not pay anything close to the costs for theirs.

If you forced trucks to pay for the damage they do to roads rail freight would be far more competitive.

Gibbon1··on DraftKings is using AI to behaviorally target chronic gamblers
Reminds me a political blogger complaining that the leaders of every slightly depressed muni in Pennsylvania thought that a gambling casino is just what's needed to revitalize the local economy.

Thing I sense is casino's actually depress local property values. You wonder if the taxes casino's generate don't cover the drop in property tax revenue.

Gibbon1··on What is going on with ceiling fans
As someone that designs battery powered RF devices. It's shocking an disheartening seeing stuff like that.

Things drawing an average of a few hundred microamps while the fan is running. Probably because it's blasting a keep alive packet once a second or so. It does that because a transceiver costs an extra 50 cents.

Gibbon1··on Before pixels: Modular industrial dashboards
Commonly these components were modular just based on some of the ones I've handled decades ago.

Imagine a configurable rotary switch.

You have the knob part available in a selection of styles and colors.

You have the switch body, which can come in different types, single pole, two pole, NC, NO ext. One I saw you could stack them.

Then you had a basemount with terminal connections, screw, solder, etc.

I've handled decade encoders, stackable numbered encoders. The more convenient ones the the computer could read the selected numbers like you do keyboard matrix.

Peek 1960-70s industrial design. Still available.

The people that complain about 'free parking' conveniently forget that land owners pay property taxes, vehicle and fuel taxes, and other taxes which go to maintaining the public roads. So it's not free. And society built a lot of infrastructure which requires most people to own a car in order to survive in it. That sort of bitching is the classic case where you shift blame to individuals for systematic issues beyond their control. And how much blame people get depends on class of course.

Gibbon1··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
I found some data from an auto insurance association.

In US urban areas the average car is only driven 6000 miles a year. That's 115 miles a week. Someone in an urban city would only need to charge every two weeks. Friend has a Chevy Bolt in SF he parks on the street. He says it's not a problem.

I also repeat myself but I've measured how long it take to gas up a car on road trips. It's usually around 10-15 minutes. Oh sure actually filling the car is quick. But you have to drive to the gas station, fill the car, drive away from the gas station.

I like to point out once you leave urban areas land is really cheap. And land without water rights or with poor soil is really cheap.
Gibbon1··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
What we need is to change the rules so any company that sells ads gets taxed on revenue in addition to profit. Not just ad revenue, all revenue.
Gibbon1··on US Revokes Limits on Power Plants' Climate Pollution
Something I read about Britain. The ratio of loans for existing properties vs loans for new construction or upgrades is 17 to 1.

Basically finance is 94% churn.

My company the owner of our old office sold it and the new owners commercial loan required he raise the rents to cover the new loan. Raise as in double out rent. That's capital being used for harmful level of extraction.

Gibbon1··on US Revokes Limits on Power Plants' Climate Pollution
A thought is that from 'their' perspective the potential loss of power and status on the tip top of things is to them existential. Consider a certain Senator being wheeled into the Senate to vote. Why even subject ones self to that. Because to step down is annihilation. There was another Senator in 2023 being wheeled around the same way.

So all of this is performative asserting power in order to punish anyone seen as a threat to the current system.

Gibbon1··on Show HN: The bottom 50% of U.S. households are short after essentials (BLS data)
The problem is with wealth comes the power to change the rules to your advantage. This is already happening for instance the large difference between capital gains tax rates and earned income ones.
Gibbon1··on Most people prefer traditional architecture
> Ugliness has become a cultural norm in order to suit the modern economy.

I read someone's argument that the ugliness results in market failure. Because the ugly results in not only local opposition to building renewable it results in everyone in the area being opposed. And they then use the political process to block new construction.

What really bad is after a 100 years of this the construction industry no longer knows how to design attractive buildings. Starts with architecture where 2/3 of the architects are aesthetically blind. And the remaining 1/3 had it beaten out of the in school. Ends with manufactures that have long since stopped manufacturing pleasing materials for construction.

Gibbon1··on Killing with a car costs $1.6M, California requires drivers to carry $30K
Worth pointing out that uninsured motorists coverage in California is quite inexpensive. And that is NOT true of Florida.

Where I disagree with the point of the article is insurance is a last resort thing. If you want to reduce traffic deaths that's not where to focus your attention. Reading the article it smells of neoliberal thinking.

Gibbon1··on Killing with a car costs $1.6M, California requires drivers to carry $30K
Because of Prop 103 California has reasonable insurance rates especially considering cost of living. California's laws and regulations are oriented around forcing people to have at least some coverage. I suspect that the laws annoy insurance companies because they conflict with MBAs craven impulses. But those impulses when not pushed back against eventually result in collapse.
Gibbon1··on Killing with a car costs $1.6M, California requires drivers to carry $30K
Something people that bitch about the high cost of California vs Florida won't mention is how high auto and home owners insurance is in Florida. Florida is a high risk state with a lot of fraud.
Gibbon1··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route
US lost 2500 soldiers in Afghanistan between 2001 and when Trump betrayed his country to appease Putin.

Okinawa alone cost 12,000 US soldiers. With 100,000 to 150,000 civilian deaths.

Gibbon1··on Hitachi launches CO2 heat pump water heaters with solar-friendly tariff controls
Considering that US houses usually either have a crawl space, basement, or are on a slab the lack of a drain is weird when you think about it. You would think wet locations would be required to have a drain.

I think a lot of European houses have floor drains in the bath, you can basically hose the bathroom down.

More on topic. Outside of the US R290 (propane) heat pumps are common. But illegal in the US because the refrigerant manufacturers control the code bodies. You can have a 20lb propane tank hanging off a BBQ which in normal operation is literally on fire. But you can't have an R290 monoblack cause it's too dangerous.

Gibbon1··on Researchers Spot Fake Ancient Pottery Using the Earth's Magnetic Field
I'm reminded of thermoluminescence for dating objects. Radiation creates defects in the material over time. When heated the defects release light.

Imprecise but will fink on ceramics that were fired 30 years ago vs 3000 years ago. Difficulty you need to heat a fair sized sample.

Impression, author didn't understand any of what he was told.

But yes similar, over time the object picks up a faint magnetic field superimposed on the one locked in when the ceramic was made.

Gibbon1··on The largest electric aircraft just flew [video]
People are working on solid state batteries which puts you at 500-600 wh/kg.

For cars the economics is a dicey proposition. Because $/wh is important. The extra range (dubious) or lower weight has to cover the cost difference.

But for electric aircraft there is a lot to be gained by weight savings.

Gibbon1··on The largest electric aircraft just flew [video]
There are maybe some advantages to a hybrid system.

The higher reliability of electric.

Losing an turbine engine doesn't mean asymmetrical thrust. Plane still flies normally.

Losing an engine on takeoff you still have full power.

Electric motors spin up faster than turbines. Which means faster throttle response. Which you need when hit with a wind shear on landing.

Take off and landing under electric power means much less noise.

Efficiency, you can increase the number of props or fans to get a much higher bypass ratio. Worth noting the plane in the video has four props.
