Gibbon1··on Tesla Solar Roof is on life support as it pivot to panels
Big picture society wide economics make no sense because utility grade solar costs half as much per installed watt.

On the other hand it can make sense based on arbitrage. In a lot of markets the cost of the system is unfairly subsidized. People on the losing side of that can lower their costs with roof top solar.

Gibbon1··on New stainless steel can survive conditions for hydrogen production in seawater
One interesting use is hydrogen to feed microbes. The driver potentially is solar panels produce 30-100 times more energy an acre than corn. So what if you use solar to produce hydrogen to feed microbes which then produce various feed stocks using nitrogen and CO2 from the air.
Gibbon1··on Maryland citizens hit with $2B power grid upgrade for out-of-state AI
Friend of mine used to work in that space. He said there were people who were trying to do their job making sure the rate payers interests were being looked after. And people whose only interest was sucking up to the utilities in hope that they'll be rewarded by an offer to switch sides.
Gibbon1··on Two millionth electric car registered as market rebounds from tax changes
You start running numbers the cost of solar and wind capacity to power an electric car is about 10% of the purchase price. And considering they have a battery that can store a weeks worth of energy and spend 95% of the time just sitting. Basically not a problem.
Gibbon1··on BYOMesh – New LoRa mesh radio offers 100x the bandwidth
Worth mentioning that 2.4GHz has a lot more attenuation due to clutter than 900MHz. Your problem is usually buildings and non line of site transmission paths. When the signal has to pass through and bounce off things your link budget takes a big hit.

There is the idea of the path loss exponent. In a vacuum it's 2.0. 900Mhz with clutter it's -2.5 At 2.4 MHz it's -3 and -5.8 it's -3.5.

Other downside for higher spreading factor spectrum is data rate drops which results in longer packets. Longer packets means more energy per packet and a higher chance someone else will blow your packet out of the water.

You've been able to buy 900 and 2.4GHz transceivers for the last 20 years.

Gibbon1··on Maryland to ban A.I.-driven price increases in grocery stores
When I was at that tender age when many nerdy boys read and fall to Atlas Shrugged I read The Pearl by Steinbeck. Which has a passage I never forgot.

“It was supposed that the pearl buyers were individuals acting alone, bidding against one another for the pearls the fishermen brought in. And once it had been so. But this was a wasteful method, for often, in the excitement of bidding for a fine pearl, too great a price had been paid to the fisherman. This was extravagant and not to be countenanced. Now there was only one pearl buyer with many hands"

Gibbon1··on VS Code inserting 'Co-Authored-by Copilot' into commits regardless of usage
If you can get AI to write your slop is it really socially valuable enough to justify copyright?

Even before AI copyrighting software was questionable.

Gibbon1··on VS Code inserting 'Co-Authored-by Copilot' into commits regardless of usage
The formulas used for asset valuations blow up when growth turns negative.
Gibbon1··on VS Code inserting 'Co-Authored-by Copilot' into commits regardless of usage
One could argue that Co-Authored by Copilot means 'not under copyright'
Gibbon1··on SFO Quiet Airport (2025)
I remember one time I had to fly back from a business trip on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Made me realize there is something about business travelers, they cut towards situationally aware and self conscientious types. The opposite of people flying the day before Thanksgiving.

I flew into the Orange County Airport before they tore it down and made it like the others. Felt very civilized. As I get older I find the hostile public spaces and infrastructure more and more annoying.

Gibbon1··on New study compares growing corn for energy to solar production
Worth noting you don't have to spray solar panels with pesticides and herbicides either. Nor do they require fertilizer. All of these have real negative effects.

Pesticides are causing a decline in insect populations and the animals that eat them. Herbicides what can say more than that. Fertilizer causes algae blooms and hypoxic conditions in lakes and streams. All three cause ground water pollution.

I'm a broken record, solar is 30 times more productive per acre than ethanol corn.

Gibbon1··on The abandoned war: Why no one is stopping the genocide in Sudan
It's been interesting watching the left slipping into full blown eliminationist antisemitism.
Gibbon1··on Why Japan has such good railways
If you tried that your politicians would get tossed out of office the next election.

Your argument totally ignores that all this infrastructure was built around using cars. Doing things like banning street parking doesn't magically reorganize the way everything was built out over the last 100 years. Took a 100 years to build this will take 100 or more years to undo it.

I'm also suspicious the people pushing stuff like that would in a different time and place would be wearing hair shirts and flagellating themselves. All nice but that's not most people.

Gibbon1··on Israel escalates attacks on medics in Lebanon with deadly 'quadruple tap'
The world seems to tolerate Iran's proxy war against Israel.
Gibbon1··on In Denmark, the spread of solar panels has become a divisive issue
I like make the point that solar farms produce 30-100 times more energy per acre than farming plants.

Lot of 'nature' is actually land that has been or being completely trashed via agriculture. But it's so normalized people don't get that.

Gibbon1··on The disturbing white paper Red Hat is trying to erase from the internet
I had a thought about that. Using weapons that don't give the opponent an opportunity to surrender feels like a war crime.
Gibbon1··on Renewables reached nearly 50% of global electricity capacity last year
Not trying to be offensive or throw shade, but I wouldn't be surprised if the older plants were built fast and cheap and have issues; emissions, efficiency, maintenance, safety.
Gibbon1··on ‘Energy independence feels practical’: Europeans building mini solar farms
I have the curse of having an mom who was a smart CPA.

All this stuff root top solar, plug in solar costs at least twice what utility solar. And only makes sense when you have messed up rate setting schemes that enable arbitrage.

But it's not what you want if you want to get the most GW connected as fast as possible.

Like the requirements that new houses have roof top solar. You could get twice as much if you just invested the money in a conventional solar farm.

Gibbon1··on Iran oil revenue soars as it's the only exporter out of Hormuz
You can run the numbers the cost isn't that bad to do it that way.

I think South Africa gets most of its diesel from the Fischer–Tropsch process. You could use electrolytic hydrogen as an input for that. About 40% of the energy in gasoline is from hydrogen burning.

It's not great but it would allow you to run current vehicles off about 40% solar energy.

Gibbon1··on Miscellanea: The War in Iran
Counter point to 4. The Israeli's wouldn't be trying to kill the Iranian leaders if they hadn't spent the last 40 years waging a proxy war against Israel.
Gibbon1··on Atlassian says it had right to fire engineer for suggesting CEO is 'rich jerk'
Yeah especially when they are a CEO.
Gibbon1··on The future of version control
I've seen merged code where the memory barriers were misplaced.
Gibbon1··on Innocent woman jailed after being misidentified using AI facial recognition
There was a man arrested in Santa Clara county because his DNA was tracked to a murder scene by the paramedics that treated him before they were called to the scene of the murder. He only got away with it because the public defender realized that he was in the hospitals detox at the time of the murder.
Gibbon1··on Don't post generated/AI-edited comments. HN is for conversation between humans
Friend of mine was a English teacher. She quit because she's not going to waste her time 'grading' 30 essays written by AI.

Anyway before that she HATED the thesaurus. And she could tell when students were using it to make their writing more fancy pants.

Gibbon1··on Tony Hoare has died
I feel there is a tension between computer science is math and computer science is plumbing.
Gibbon1··on Florida judge rules red light camera tickets are unconstitutional
I don't have a phrase to describe this concept. But it's when we blame one thing for a problem caused by another. Because placing the blame where is belongs is inconvenient.

You create a transport system where you're mixing incompatible modes of transport and carnage is what you get. What I see is instead of placing the blame on that everyone wants to place the blame on someone anyone else based on whatever moral anxiety they have.

Consider some people are drunks, you create a system where they have to drive you get drunk drivers. Don't want a bar walking distance from your quiet suburban neighborhood, again drunk drivers. Zoning that separates businesses and stores from low density housing. Driving, accidents. Mix pedestrian, bicycle, bus and car traffic, you get carnage.

No one really wants to blame the system and spend money to fix it. So blaming other individuals is what we do.

Gibbon1··on No leap second will be introduced at the end of June 2026
The rest of the world should abandon UTC completely. It's not suitable for time keeping because butt scratching hairless monkeys mess with it.
Gibbon1··on TSA leaves passenger needing surgery after illegally forcing her through scanner
So every year the TSA wastes about 60,000 man years.
Gibbon1··on The United States and Israel have launched a major attack on Iran
Things have changed since I was a kid. We've gone from saturation bombing and dropping nukes as the big kahuna to being able to do point assassination strikes.

Topical the Israelis just killed Khamenei.

Gibbon1··on Following 35% growth, solar has passed hydro on US grid
Some comment I read I keep coming back to. They (elites) will risk everything to give up nothing.

The same elites that were telling us we can't have electric cars because the power grid can't support them are now building massive data centers for AI which they think will allow them to completely ignore the working class.
