Gibbon1··on Researchers Spot Fake Ancient Pottery Using the Earth's Magnetic Field
I'm reminded of thermoluminescence for dating objects. Radiation creates defects in the material over time. When heated the defects release light.

Imprecise but will fink on ceramics that were fired 30 years ago vs 3000 years ago. Difficulty you need to heat a fair sized sample.

"Reads article"

Impression, author didn't understand any of what he was told.

But yes similar, over time the object picks up a faint magnetic field superimposed on the one locked in when the ceramic was made.

Gibbon1··on The largest electric aircraft just flew [video]
People are working on solid state batteries which puts you at 500-600 wh/kg.

For cars the economics is a dicey proposition. Because $/wh is important. The extra range (dubious) or lower weight has to cover the cost difference.

But for electric aircraft there is a lot to be gained by weight savings.

Gibbon1··on The largest electric aircraft just flew [video]
There are maybe some advantages to a hybrid system.

The higher reliability of electric.

Losing an turbine engine doesn't mean asymmetrical thrust. Plane still flies normally.

Losing an engine on takeoff you still have full power.

Electric motors spin up faster than turbines. Which means faster throttle response. Which you need when hit with a wind shear on landing.

Take off and landing under electric power means much less noise.

Efficiency, you can increase the number of props or fans to get a much higher bypass ratio. Worth noting the plane in the video has four props.

Gibbon1··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
I remember when my friends were singing the praises of Chrome and Gmail and I was telling them it's a trap.

Google has consistently sad they want to stop exposing url's. That's 100% them wanting to prevent people from bypassing them when accessing the web.

Gibbon1··on Commercially Available Bike Generators Are Not Sustainable (2011)
That's the thing, like the used to be very expensive swing compressor ice chests that you can buy in the US for $150. You'd only need a 100 amp hour battery and a 100W solar panel to power it.
Gibbon1··on Commercially Available Bike Generators Are Not Sustainable (2011)
Solar panels I think are too high tech for them.

I remember reading about low tech efficient cook stoves for poor countries and thinking the misses would rather have an induction burner, microwave, and an ice chest running off a solar panel.

Gibbon1··on Coconut oil jet fuel matches kerosene's efficiency in engine tests
The neo Calvinism runs deep. People think fixing problems involves austerity and take aways for the unelect.

It's a real problem because it has really bad political optics. And results in obsessing about 'fixing' inconsequential things or solutions that make things worse.

Gibbon1··on Moderna reports first positive Phase 3 for mRNA neoantigen therapy in melanoma
Immune therapy is hit or miss. Friends lung cancer was exquisitely sensitive to it. Stage 4 to no sign of disease. Another friend with melanoma immune therapy didn't seem to help at all.

Melanoma is usually completely resistant to traditional cancer drugs. So that sometimes immune therapy works is very welcome.

Electric vehicles are stills cars. But better than gasoline and especially diesel cars.

So yeah.

That said not clear to me about PM2.5 is I've never seen anything legit seeming that tries to characterize the harm based on the type/source. Though it seems agreed diesel is especially bad.

Gibbon1··on Using GCC's Nested Functions with Wide Pointers and No Trampolines II
That's what it felt to me like. With non split stacks you're mixing return addresses with potentially entrusted data. You're already living in sin. With split stacks a trampoline wouldn't be a problem.
Gibbon1··on China's renewable boom masks a quiet Coal-to-Liquids expansion
I've been wondering about that, South Africa has a lot of coal to gasoline/diesel. Developed during the apartheid era to bypass international oil embargoes.

Places with good insolation could probably use green hydrogen + coal to produce fuels. Considering how much gasoline is taxed they probably could make it pencil out by adjusting fuel taxes.

> industrial products like fertilizers and steel have a carbon dependency that cannot be alleviated and which most of those states are expanding.

When I run the numbers I don't see that. Ammonia is about 18% Hydrogen. Using green hydrogen would cost $500 per ton of ammonia. Putting it in perspective world production of ammonia is about 25kg per capita.

Gibbon1··on Mistral Patent for “Code implemented tool calls”
A friend that has a degree in engineering and law who works as a patent lawyer had this to say.

Interesting physical real world problems are NP hard. That's why we have patents. Software? You can work backwards from the requirements to multiple solutions almost always. Which is why patents on software are stupid.

Copyrights are originally to protect authors because an author might create a few dozen works over a lifetime. Of which a few mich actually be worth anything. Copyrights were to protect his income and allow him to leave an inheritance behind.

Copyrights for software is stupid because most of it is mechanically generated and it goes old like last weeks fish. Quote: The source code for Windows 3.1 who cares.

Gibbon1··on "Clean" Code, Horrible Performance (2023)
I keep coming back to the idea he's advocating using long function names as a substitute for comments.

Instead of // do the thing followed by 5 lines of code to do the thing. You're supposed to put those five lines in a function named DoTheThing(). That doesn't seem better to me.

Gibbon1··on Israel is building a miles-long barrier in Gaza, entrenching its division
Every cycle of violence leaves them in a worse position than before.
Gibbon1··on Producing ammonia and fertiliser using wind power in Morris, Minnesota
You need about 50-55kwh to produce a kg of hydrogen.

Urea molar mass is 60. And the formula is CO(NH2)2. 4 moles of hydrogen per mole. So 6.6% hydrogen by weight.

1000kg of urea needs then 66.6kg of hydrogen. At 55khw per kg of hydrogen you need 3666 kwh per ton of urea. (not counting other energy inputs).

At $0.05/kwh that's $183 for the hydrogen input.

Worth mentioning the internet says fertilizer is about 7% of an average farm budget and only 1% of the cost of food at the store.

I'm on the side of sure no problem really when it comes to green nitrogen fertilizer.

Gibbon1··on Israel is building a miles-long barrier in Gaza, entrenching its division
Used to be Palestinians could freely travel between the West Bank and Israel. That ended after the First Intifada when general travel permission was revoked. And you needed personal exit permits. After the second Intifada and terrorist attacks the Israeli's build walls around Palestinian areas.

It doesn't feel Palestinian supporters support for solutions via violence and terrorism has had any positive benefit for Palestinians in the west bank and Gaza.

Gibbon1··on Amazon seller reveals glimpse of shadow bribery market
25 years ago if you wanted to sell a product you had to ship samples to buyers who would beat the crap out of it and if they liked it they'd place orders for 100s of thousands a month.

Amazon got it's start in that world undercutting the brick and mortar stores with their carefully curated manufacturers and buyers. In the process they completely destroyed it. Which is why 80% of the stuff for sale now is shitty.

Gibbon1··on Why does kinetic energy increase quadratically, not linearly, with speed? (2011)
I think if you define energy as force X distance then integration alone will give you the squared term.

How I got banned from some reddit channel. Flip this around ask if a ball were fired out of a gun up into the air what height would it reach? A ball twice as fast goes up 4 times as high. If energy is force times distance it had 4 times the energy.

Gibbon1··on WordStar: A Writer's Word Processor (1996)
