Gengaron Ask HN: How to recover Google auth after phone stolen?

You are screwed. I lost access to my account, by trying to buy YouTube premium ironically. If Google even tried to help me I would still use them but they don't, so I switched to Proton and use YouTube with VPN only so they get zero ad revenue :)

Gengaron Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026)

I don't like any of the current achievement tracking websites for Steam so I built my own. Free to use and no account required as auth handled via Steam. If you have any feedback I appreciate it! https://steamforge.app

Gengaron Locked out of 14 year old YouTube channel because tied to Hotmail.com email

The actual hotmail email was hacked years ago but doesn't matter in this case, I have a Google account that uses a hotmail email address and I know the password.

Gengaron Locked out of 14 year old YouTube channel because tied to Hotmail.com email

I made this account 14 years ago when I was a teenager. I didn't even know my YouTube was tied to this Hotmail Google Account until the past week or that it even existed.

Gengaron Locked out of 14 year old YouTube channel because tied to Hotmail.com email

This is a Google account with a hotmail email address and I know the password. The actual hotmail account itself can't help me in this instance.

Gengaron Ask HN: Anyone working remotely for a US company internationally?

I might have been an international Reddit employee also had the recruiter not ghosted me when I gave times available for interview!

Gengaron Ask HN: Feeling guilty for doing the bare minimum at work

I can't remember the last time I worked more than 3 hours, being done by lunch time everyday is great. If I work in the afternoon it is just mandatory meetings.

Gengaron Ask HN: Questions to ask a company to know you don't want to work there?

100% agree with these comments. I will never do unpaid on-call, a gas engineer is paid for being on-call, software shouldn't be any different. Its most likely because their are many people in software who will work on call for free, I see it first hand at my current company.

Gengaron iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro

Yeah, I read rumors about the iPhone Mini when the SE 2 launched. Glad I waited!

Gengaron Microsoft to acquire ZeniMax Media and Bethesda Softworks for $7.5B

Overwatch is pretty successful.

Gengaron Nintendo 3DS discontinued after almost a decade

PS Vita game library is nowhere near as strong though. It is another cool cheap device for homebrew.

Gengaron Idea Generation

I have the opposite problem. How are you generating ideas?

Gengaron Tell HN: I ate only food in pill format for 3 months and lost 65 lbs

I'd try it but only if it had good macros like some meal replacement drinks, my diet is like 80% Huel currently, with the rest being free lunch / snacks at work and snacks on the weekend. Originally started on these type of drinks because I was so depressed at one point I could barely motivate myself to eat any more. Ended up staying on them because not only do you save a ton of time but they are good source of protein and calories (I lift) and I've never been one to eat a lot so its helped tremendously. Pill form would be even better just from a time saving perspective.
