Geekette··on SBF Goes to Prison: Why He Got 25 Years
The post doesn't necessarily suggest the sentence is steep, it just outlines the surprised reaction of people in the courtroom: "Even after everything that the public has learned about the duplicitous life of SBF, the decision was met with a heavy silence in the courtroom".

I found it a straightforward description of the factors behind the judge's stated reasons for the sentencing decision, including the fact that SBF perjured himself at least thrice during the trial, obstructed justice via attempted witness tampering and refused to admit or apologize for his criminal activities, etc.

Geekette··on Spousal Relative Income and Male Psychological Distress
"Using Panel Study of Income Dynamics 2001-2015 dataset (6,035 households, 19,688 observations), this study takes a new approach to investigating the relationship between wife’s relative income and husband’s psychological distress, and finds it to be significantly U-shaped. Controlling for total household income, predicted male psychological distress reaches a minimum at a point where wives make 40% of total household income and proceeds to increase, to reach highest level when men are entirely economically dependent on their wives. These results reflect the stress associated with being the sole breadwinner, and more significantly, with gender norm deviance due to husbands being outearned by their wives. Interestingly, the relationship between wife’s relative income and husband’s psychological distress is not found among couples where wives outearned husbands at the beginning of their marriage pointing to importance of marital selection. Finally, patterns reported by wives are not as pronouncedly U-shaped as those reported by husbands".

Geekette··on Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman
"While Malone promotes himself as an inventor of mRNA vaccines,[1][7] credit for the distinction is more often given to the lead authors on the major papers he contributed to (such as Felgner and Wolff), later advances by Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman,[3][19] or Moderna co-founder Derrick Rossi.[13] Ultimately, mRNA vaccines were the decades-long result of the contributions of hundreds of researchers, including Malone.[3][20][21] In April 2022, Davey Alba, writing for The New York Times, said that "[w]hile he was involved in some early research into the technology, his role in its creation was minimal at best", citing "half a dozen Covid experts and researchers, including three who worked closely with Dr. Malone."[7] "[0]

Geekette··on Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman
Dr. Kariko’s experience makes me wonder how many other potentially groundbreaking research nodes are being ignored and whether organizations like YC actually have adequate mechanisms to identify such potential bio-science startups.

"Dr. Kariko’s struggles to stay afloat in academia have a familiar ring to scientists. She needed grants to pursue ideas that seemed wild and fanciful. She did not get them, even as more mundane research was rewarded. “When your idea is against the conventional wisdom that makes sense to the star chamber, it is very hard to break out,” said Dr. David Langer ... Leading scientific journals rejected their work. When the research finally was published, in Immunity, it got little attention. ... “We talked to pharmaceutical companies and venture capitalists. No one cared,” Dr. Weissman said. “We were screaming a lot, but no one would listen.[1]”

Geekette··on Year after BLM protests, S&P 100 added 323K jobs – 94% went to people of color
"In 2021, Hispanic, Asian and Black people made up a vast majority of the added workers — a trend that, analysts say, is necessary to overcome their historic underrepresentation. ... The biggest shifts happened in less-senior job categories.

... White people still hold a disproportionate share of the top, highly paid jobs in the US at S&P 100 companies. But the share of executive, managerial and professional roles held by people of color increased by about 2 percentage points compared with 2020

... In 2021, companies were hiring lots of people while prioritizing diversity. Many have since cut jobs amid an economic slowdown just as a backlash to corporate diversity efforts grows."

Geekette··on Erasing Existence of 1500 People:UK's Ongoing Colonial Crime in the Indian Ocean
"The saga began back in the 1960s when the United States, seeking to cement its global military supremacy, started looking for remote islands where it could establish strategic bases. ... The early 1960s saw the beginning of secret negotiations between the British and the Americans over the establishment of a "joint communications base"

...In September 2016, the tiny African state was able to get Chagos back on the United Nations agenda for the first time in half a century. The following year, the UN General Assembly – over fierce resistance from London – voted to seek an advisory opinion on the issue from the International Court of Justice. The judges, responsible for territorial disagreements, were asked to determine whether the British violated international law when they split Chagos off from Mauritius in the 1960s. ... The United Kingdom, the court found, had "forcibly removed" the population of the Chagos islands. Furthermore, the "process of decolonization of Mauritius (was) not lawfully completed." London, reads the court opinion, must return the archipelago to Mauritius "as rapidly as possible."

The British, though, had no intentions of complying. Even before the court opinion, then Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson had exhibited no qualms about extending the lease for Diego Garcia to 2036. Now, London ignored the International Court of Justice and, a short time later, disregarded the UN General Assembly, which voted 116 to 6 in a resolution demanding the end of British rule in Chagos. Among European countries, only Hungary sided with the UK. Finally, London also brushed off a ruling from the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, located in Hamburg, which confirmed Mauritius’ sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago in 2021."
