GarvielLoken··on Memories Can Be Injected and Survive Amputation and Metamorphosis
Age old wisdom. That's why you always eat the heart of your enemies, so you can grow in power.
GarvielLoken··on Crows could be the smartest animal other than primates
For a whole like 8 seconds before it's nap time
GarvielLoken··on The Real Class War
But it is different. You ( like the russians and the english ) live in a gerontocracy which I would guess is a effect of your personal power base focus with individuals driving political campaings for them self, instead of being pawns that are whipped if they step out of the party line on issues ( an effect based off having multiple small parties ).

For all who are interested in this I can strongly recommend the book Beyond the Gates of Fire: New Perspectives on the Battle of Thermopylae coaoutherd by a favorite authour of mine Christopher Matthew.

GarvielLoken··on UK teenager loses sight from poor diet
Which makes it a chiken and egg problem because Autism has been linked to... diet. There's a lot of new research now on the links between the gut and the brain.
GarvielLoken··on A man who destroyed his multimillion dollar company in 10 seconds (2018)
Happiness has the absolute strongest correlation with a strong social life and not with wealth. That's why happiness is declining in the WEIRD countries (Western, educated, industrialized, rich and democratic).
GarvielLoken··on How four packets broke CenturyLink's network
Well it is easy to find time to add gold-plating to a small basically useless service, but those guys are probably swamped or try to cut cost by being agile or something.
GarvielLoken··on Emma Chamberlain dropped out of school and changed the world of online video
Have fun at the retirement home grandpa!
GarvielLoken··on Raising the American Weakling (2017)
Judo, which is wildly practices everywhere outside of USA, builds grip strength by constants practice. And at least here in Europe almost every small community have a Judo club where hordes of children attends. And Judo has been in the Olympics for a long time.
GarvielLoken··on Hawk guidance system tuned for close pursuit of erratically maneuvering targets
Anyone else that plays wargame red dragon and thought this was gonna be about the MIM-23 Hawk Anti-Air system? I mean common, guidance system usually refers to machines not living beings.
GarvielLoken··on F-35: What The Pilots Say
Haha! It's a good joke. Don't know why you are being downvoted. Now the other guy could could afford to get some of those downvotes instead.
GarvielLoken··on F-35: What The Pilots Say
1 rpm sustained fire is extremely low. That's like a magnitude worse than the other modern alternatives. All others also fire atleast twice as fast and for almost 150% of the distance. Also sense the gun is that bad it creates a self reinforcing effect, why would you want more of it if it's bad?
GarvielLoken··on F-35: What The Pilots Say
As programmers we are well trained to find the source of a problem, not treating the symptoms. The source problem is a lack of fire support for troops. This does not require an airborne weapon platform, fire support can be delivered by cannon and rocket artillery. And coincidentally this area is lacking in the US armed forces.

The Paladin is based on a chassi from like the early 1960s and can only do three rounds per minute or one round per minute sustained up to 22km. In comparison the Panzerhaubitze 2000 that can fire 10-13 rounds a minute continuously up to 30km. The 2016 Russian 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV can do 16 rounds per minute up to 40km, even the older 2S19 "Msta-S" manages 6-8 rounds per minute up to 24km. Not to mention the modern wheeled based systems like the Archer or the CAESAR which would be ideal for rapid redeployment against threats in a low intensity conflict.

And then we have rocket artillery systems, here the USA actually have a modern piece that is good in low intensity warfare, the M142 HIMARS. But compared to the Russians the US basically doesn't have any long range rocket artillery systems available for fire support.

But if you insist on having a CAS platform then forget about the A-10. Ask the Russians if you can buy some SU-25 Frogfoots. It's the best CAS in the world.

GarvielLoken··on Anthropic Capitalism and the New Gimmick Economy (2016)
You can, it has already been done. History repeats itself etc etc.

The Roman state was powered by slaves ( which is the ancient form of automation ) and the plebs were basically unemployed citizens. It worked, it created a system where the richest people competed for power by public moves and schemes.

GarvielLoken··on The Stigma of Choosing Trade School over College
It's the norm in Europe. I was taking a jab at you guys implicit understanding that university cost a lot, it doesn't in half of the western world.
GarvielLoken··on The Stigma of Choosing Trade School over College
Well it's also that you don't know what you don't know. The University programs are made by smart people with a good learning and a wealth of experiences and they design courses that goes all the way to the state of the art.

To say that you do that on your own is hubris.

GarvielLoken··on The Stigma of Choosing Trade School over College
What do you mean? Collage and University is free. You only have to pay for study material and rent! And the Government provide you with free studygrants and loans at an affordable rate and payback plan.
GarvielLoken··on An Honest Living
Well I havn't changed career but after graduation I did start doing my hobby half-time so to speak and it atleast filled the physical world need I believe. Rampt up my BJJ, and to a lesser extend Judo, from 1-2 times a week to 4-6 times a week training so that the club was basically my second home, also started competing actively during three-four years.

These days I'm dialing down on it, back to around three times a week. Started doing Cuban Salsa a year ago because of my current girlfriend, who also goes to BJJ with me. Changed job from an e-commerce which I worked for the first four years to an IT-consultant firm where I'm currently at my third assignment, changing things up. Negotiated to have two months service leave during the summer the last two years where I try to travel.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is that you don't need to change occupation, you do hobbies and try to renegotiate your conditions.

GarvielLoken··on German for Programmers
Yeah like in Spanish "la moto", which would make you think that's wrong because moto ends on o and should be masculine. But turns out it is actually a short for "la motocicleta", which ends in an a.

GarvielLoken··on Knowledge from small number of debates outperforms wisdom of large crowds (2017)
Then the obvious solution is to divide nation states down to small, well-educated populations no?
GarvielLoken··on The new Yahoo? Facebook should heed the lessons of internet history
Sort of. Facebook has left a market wide open, their original one. At the start when people started to use Facebook it was mostly young people sharing more intimate pictures and stories with their friends and people of similar age and mindset.

Now facebook is your public profile, where your aunt, parents and employer can see everything you do and judge every post you make. That's why we have nice pictures of cityscapes, nature, holidays and of food on our profiles. Because anything intimate or controversial would be exposed to a too big audience for comfort.

So the market for smaller circles of "parent free zones" is wide open. I personally believe that's one of the reason Instagram got traction, your parents and employer weren't there in the start but your friends were. Just look at Tumbler.

GarvielLoken··on Non cogito, ergo sum
This is one of the goals of Judo. It combines rational thinking, "How does this throw work? Why did not my attempt work?" with the end goal of not needing the thinking in practice. No Mind. It's what allows any musician or performance artist, race car driver, to be effective; Because they need to operate creatively at speeds that are faster then rational thinking. And this in our field is of course known as "being in the flow".
