Game_Ender··on A Matter of Millimeters: The story of Qantas flight 32
It would add up weight wise, and it’s one of the simpler parts. Jet engines are high performance precise machines with many quickly spinning parts. If you can’t bore a tube correctly how are you going to machine a high efficiency, balanced turbofan system?

That said it seems like did have a poor process where a part could be out of spec and they had no good way to check it. As they mentioned about Swiss cheese, you want as many layers as possible, and checks like that are needed.

Game_Ender··on A connection between after-hours work and decreased productivity
Part of the way I explain this is the amount of overhead in a company or position. Say you have 20 hours of coordination, planning and meetings/week, and 20 hours of direct work. If you work 50 hours you know increase how much development you are doing by 50% by only working 25% more hours. Now it the organization can do the same by cutting overhead and meetings but that is usually not up to one high performance contributor.

Like you said the impact of a top contributor doing 50% more work can be really large, entire new systems can be built, key features launched. It can get you promoted, but you definitely won’t get a 50% raise.

Game_Ender··on Officially Qualified – Ferrocene
This is very exciting, the interop with C really opens the ability to fold this into an existing OS and drivers. Any existing examples of operating system integration, for example working with SafeRTOS [0].

Game_Ender··on Uber migrates microservices to multi-cloud platform running Kubernetes and Mesos
Uber invested heavily in tooling that makes creating and deploying a new service take about 30 minutes. This was before they invested in making it as easy to share code. If you combine that with fast hiring and a big pressure to ship, it makes sense to solve every problem with a new service that calls a few others.
Game_Ender··on Fury – Fast multi-language serialization framework powered by JIT and Zero-copy
Two questions:

- Does Fury support versioning?

- What is source of truth for the schema when dealing with multiple languages and the same data?

Game_Ender··on Most demographers now predict that human population will plateau
I think they are talking about the fervent fringe political ideologies, like trumpism or being very woke.
Game_Ender··on Bard can now connect to your Google Apps and services
I think you need to give tasks that enable it to lookup and process specific documents. I am not sure they designed it for data mining tasks. And it’s probably not as smart as GPT4 which might break it down into steps like “search for possible flight confirmations” and “validate results”.
Game_Ender··on Knightmare: A DevOps Cautionary Tale (2014)
> andon cord systems more often

What did you mean by this? Do you mean a way to disable systems at the flick of a switch, like dynamic feature flags?

Game_Ender··on Lockheed Martin has been selling its trademark to apparel retailers

Baggy pants, knit caps, and hoodies. All modeled by serious looking young adults with the Lockheed Martin logo on the front or back.

Game_Ender··on WebRTC support being added to FFmpeg
Thanks, I was look for well supported and actively maintained C++ library and libdatachannel looks like it!

Btw you need to check the links the AWS one is broken, and rawrtc has had only a few commits over the last few years. Also neither of those is compared in the webrtc-echoes.

Game_Ender··on WebRTC support being added to FFmpeg
It will be great to have an alternative to using a big chunk of a Chrome [0] just to be able stream video to a client.

Game_Ender··on Mormon whistleblower says his church is a “clandestine hedge fund”
Mormons have a “history of calamity” so to speak where they found themselves having to move or hit by various disasters. This is very recently in religious terms, last 200 years or so. So this is reflected in much more focus on having a financial cushion as well as other disaster preparedness things like a few months of food saved up at home.

Think of it as the religious version of your great grandmother who lived through that depression always saving odd things and being extra thrifty. Some scars run very deep and have long term behavioral changes.

Game_Ender··on Show HN: GPT-4-powered web searches for developers
Check out https://glean.com no clue how good their new “AI” features are but it definitely unlocks all the date from the typical corporate tools and gives you one search box.
Game_Ender··on China: A genetic experiment that inserted tardigrade genes into human stem cells
Medical science is one field where, assuming your can handle the deaths, ignoring ethics will let you move faster than competitors. You can skip early phases and go right to testing in people, you can try gene editing and just bring embryos to term and check the results. An interesting counter to this is that CCP draws some power from its ability to be seen as a legitimate protector. So losses from overly aggressive medical experimentation will have to be kept quiet.

At some point we will be able to engineer people with more of the positive traits we see all at once, and many fewer defects. If you do it safely at scale first it would make your society more robust, but that is a big “if”.

Game_Ender··on HuggingGPT: Solving AI tasks with ChatGPT and its friends in HuggingFace
One user said they got it ask for help by having a prompt asking it to ask some, but not too many clarifying questions.

With the instruction tuning it feels like model really wants to single shot respond vs. do a back and forth. So like a junior engineer who does ask for help you have to give it a hand.

Game_Ender··on Scaling Rust Builds with Bazel
It is super tedious but for some languages a tool called Gazelle can auto-generate these for you. I know Go works well and there is a Java plugin too [0]. There is definitely some level rust support because that is how external crates are handled.

Game_Ender··on Scaling Rust Builds with Bazel
You can get coverage working for almost anything by having each test convert its coverage data to LCOV before stopping, in the same sandbox as the test.

I forget the exact details but I think you can do this with a custom run_under test wrapper used during coverage. The wrapper runs your test, with whatever custom coverage system you have, then afterwards it converts to LCOV. Sometimes this might require updates to language specific rules because the test runner itself needs to be configured.

The bottom line is that Bazel upstream does not put a lot of attention into this, so it’s under developed outside of Google, because Google internal does not use the OSS rules.

Game_Ender··on Scaling Rust Builds with Bazel
FWIW Bazel now ships linux (and Mac and Windows) arm64 binaries: https://github.com/bazelbuild/bazel/releases/download/6.1.1/...

Definitely a ton of rough edges on Bazel but the passage of time is rounding them, even if progress uneven and frustratingly slow.

Game_Ender··on After Alaska Airlines planes bump runway, a scramble to ‘pull the plug’
In a competitive industry saving money can mean lower fares for customers. It can also mean fewer total planes or engines produced reducing environmental side effects of that activity.
Game_Ender··on Microsoft Teams Premium: powered by OpenAI’s GPT-3.5
Almost all of these look like backend features that feed AI summarized or generated data. So they probably won’t hurt client performance.
Game_Ender··on Why ultra-light urban vehicles offer the only viable future for EVs
Were they too small 10 years ago? I went to a car show and compared our current “mid sized” SUV to its replacement. It grew 7 inches longer and several inches wider and taller. It’s bigger and smaller cousins did the same. So “mid sized” is now “full”, and “full” is now “extra large”.

Manufactures are also dropping their smallest cars, so effectively all cars are getting continually bigger and as a consumer it’s gradual you don’t realize it until the car doesn’t fit into the garage any more.

Game_Ender··on How to Build an Exchange (2017)
If you want a good salary with impact and embedded/high performance C++ look into the self driving field. Check companies like “Cruise” and “Waymo” and see levels.fyi. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows, but it is making the future vs simply manipulating the finical system.
Game_Ender··on Show HN: I built Haystack – your own google for scattered workplace knowledge
How do you compare to Glean? https://www.glean.com/

Not affiliated but just a happy user of their product it searches slack, confluence, jira, gmail, gdrive, github and source code all at once. With extras like Go links, verification, and some knowledge base features.

Game_Ender··on Golang disables Nagle's Algorithm by default
This is actually the review for adding back the ability to turn NODELAY on and off, it was actually in the networking code from the start https://github.com/golang/go/blob/e8a02230/src/lib/net/net.g...
Game_Ender··on Golang disables Nagle's Algorithm by default
If you trace this all the way back it's been in the Go networking stack since the beginning with the simple commit message of "preliminary network - just Dial for now " [0] by Russ Cox himself. You can see the exact line in the 2008 our repository here [1].

As an aside it was interesting to chase the history of this line of code as it was made with a public SetNoDelay function, then with a direct system call, then back to an abstract call. Along the way it was also broken out into a platform specific library, then back into a general library and go other with a pass from gofmt, all over a "short" 14 years.

Game_Ender··on As winter approaches, here's a story about why hardware is hard
As a software person this is first I have heard of FMEA (Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) [0]. Sounds like a very rigorous way to move through a system and identify all the ways it can break and develop ways to fix it.

Game_Ender··on Show HN: We scaled Git to support 1 TB repos
Xet's initial focus appears to be on data files used to drive machine learning pipelines, not on any resulting binaries.
Game_Ender··on Show HN: We scaled Git to support 1 TB repos
The tl;dr is that "xet" is like GitLFS (it stores pointers in Git, with the data in a remote server and uses smudge filters to make this transparent) with some additional features:

- Automatically includes all files >256KB in size

- By default data is de-duplicated 16KB chunks instead of whole files (with the ability to customize this per file type).

- Has a "mount" command to allow read-only browse without downloading

When launching on HN it would be better if the team was a bit more transparent with the internals. I get that "we made a better GitLFS" doesn't market as well. But you can couple that with a credible vision and story about how you are a better and where you are headed next. Instead this is mostly closer to market speak of "trust our magic solution to solve your problem".
