FromTheSteppe··on The first early human eggs from stem cells
Nobody HAS to do that. If people WANT to have children they should give them the best chances they can. If science proves IVF is the best, every parent must do it, if it's risk freedom has not been proved yet, no person that has other options available should do it. Chances are they would be ruining their children's life by expecting and comparing them to the best, so they can at least not give them handicap from birth. The world is now much more competetive and unfair to our children than it was in our time. My mother has told me countless times that childbirth is one of easier parts of motherhood.
FromTheSteppe··on How getting richer made teenagers less free
I was raised in such a house. This happened because my mother was an underachiever, and also because my father and grandparents were dead so she was unchallenged doing this.

But you are alive my friend. Don't let your child still have nightmares, regrets, and feelings of constantly not being enough in their 30s. If your child does'nt have a childhood she can never become an adult.

FromTheSteppe··on How sober should a writer be?
You are absolutely right. But those of us who live in 3rd world dictatorships are here for the fun time, not the long time. The more we live the more we experience corruption, inflation, infrastructure failure, war, water shortages, etc... Hard to do anything productive sober.
FromTheSteppe··on How AI hears accents: An audible visualization of accent clusters
While Persian has only two diphtongs and 6-8 vowels, Other Languages of Iran are full of them(e.g. Southern Kurdish speakers can pronounce 12+1 vowels and 11 diphtongs). I find it funny if all Iranians are speaking English with the Persian accent.
FromTheSteppe··on Learning Persian with Anki, ChatGPT and YouTube
I don't know how much you and I both care about this, and arranging the evidense is going to take some time. Specially since I don't know if I'm going to live in a warzone or not starting tomorrow. Sorry.
FromTheSteppe··on Learning Persian with Anki, ChatGPT and YouTube
It used to be called Persian in English, the media changed it to Farsi to reduce it's "prestige". If you knew English and you are old enough you even remember the shift (1990s–2000s).
FromTheSteppe··on Learning Persian with Anki, ChatGPT and YouTube
Because it has nothing to do with Arabic. /p/ in Persian is aspirated, and in some words, like aspirated /p/ in some other languages (e.g. Greek), it has turned into /f/; Ever wondered why ph is pronounced /f/? In Persian this is called "softening" (Narm şodegi).
FromTheSteppe··on Google will allow only apps from verified developers to be installed on Android
So people from countries US has sanctioned can't even develop and use mobile apps anymore. This will change millions of innocent lives. So unfair and racist. The reason my people are in this mess in the first place is a US coup.
FromTheSteppe··on Java at 30: Interview with James Gosling
If you are a .NET shop, .NET core still has a better Linux than Legacy .NET framework hence the migration.

If you are a Java shop everything just works so why touch it?

FromTheSteppe··on Java at 30: Interview with James Gosling
Well to be fair, if you wanted Performance, Linux support, and a framework which was built with dependency injection and async support in mind and not just have them as patched in footguns, you had to migrate to .NET Core. A Java 8 Spring app was just good enough.
FromTheSteppe··on Trump exempts phones, computers, chips from ‘reciprocal’ tariffs
It actually feels nice to see US people having a taste of the kind of government their intelligence service force other nations to have by coups, except that it does not feel nice at all. I'm sorry guys.
FromTheSteppe··on What made the Irish famine so deadly
Or Persian famine of 1917–1919, or Iranian famine of 1942–1943. Both of which the west downplays.
FromTheSteppe··on U.S. pauses all military aid to Ukraine
The reason people are living paycheck to paycheck is not because of military aids, the system is not going to spend saved money on people, and people will be the ones fighting the incoming wars.

You need unions and Universal Healthcare like the rest of the developed world to fix those problems.

FromTheSteppe··on The Pentium contains a complicated circuit to multiply by three
Shift add used to execute much faster than multiplication in 8088 days and people would use it when they had to multiply an int by a known scalar (shift took 4 clocks and add took 12).
FromTheSteppe··on US Senate to Revive Software Patents with PERA Bill Vote on Thursday
Buckle up for the next 4 years brother.
FromTheSteppe··on Physics is unreasonably good at creating new math
Haha in my country half the computer science degrees are titled "Applied Mathematics".
FromTheSteppe··on Robot dentist performs first human procedure
Haha, as a 3rd worlder; I'd much rather take my chances with a robot dentist than a dentist who's father has ties with the ruling class, who's father has bought their university sit, or who's father (allegedly) being a veteran of a war that was finished 34 years ago has gotten them a university sit.
FromTheSteppe··on Alzheimer's Risk Is Strongly Shaped by Your Mother's Side, Study Finds
At least in the circles I've been in, even bringing up the discussion of paternal uncertainty gets you "academically canceled" xD.
FromTheSteppe··on Why Bad CEOs Fear Remote Work (2021)
I don't know why I have to commute 90 minutes just to open AWS consoles, terminal tabs, Microsoft teams and Outlook. Then any communication I have with my team members and leaders must be written before I can do anything anyways.

Do I just have to sacrifice 5% of my lifetime to corporate gods? Because I gladly sacrifice more, and there is an opportunity to negotiate for better mutual terms.

FromTheSteppe··on China Added More Solar Panels in 2023 Than US Did in Its Entire History
What I read is "We need to eliminate one party to start investing more in clean energy."
FromTheSteppe··on Apple hiring compiler developers for improving Swift / C++ interoperability
For a start you should, you should buy the latest version of the Dragon Book and then put it on the shelf.

Then you should get a copy of Modern Compiler implementation in ML. I love the Crafting Interpreters book, and also the Writing A Compiler In Go book; but they will not satisfy any person with undergraduate CS education.

FromTheSteppe··on China feels the country isn't patriotic enough. A new law aims to change that
There's nothing more patriotic than mutual interests between people and the government. This requires some level of Meritocracy and I hope someday the Political Will in China decides to take this route instead.
FromTheSteppe··on A 1690s Peanut is Reborn
If you like smaller peanuts, find an Iranian trail mix shop and ask for 'tiny peanuts from Astaneh-ye Ashrafiyeh'. They've been selected for small size and taste.
FromTheSteppe··on Korea to welcome 'digital nomads' with new visa starting Jan. 1
Well, all of Asia (Middle east included) wants White engineers and see other people as second class. They figured out Europeans won't leave their living standards for Korea anyway.

Just ask any random non-white engineer working in UAE, China, and Japan. People are getting Western European passports and working in Dubai to receive first-class treatment.

FromTheSteppe··on Did English ever have a formal version of "you"? (2011)
The current 1001 nights is Arabic and the Middle Persian one is lost. Nevertheless, it is a pre-islamic literature. Perfumed Garden is Arabic and has just been recently translated into Persian.

New Persian literature starts around Rudaki (9th century). Since Islam made sex and showing affection taboo, the tiny fraction of explicit erotica are not studied/known by the general public. Because of the taboo, majority of Persians have not ever heard their parents speak affectionately. And when we study affectionate literature in school the teachers tell us it's about the love for God, and the exams will question us about such love.

FromTheSteppe··on Did English ever have a formal version of "you"? (2011)
Different cultures. Persian has 1100 years of literature and recent media for this.

On the other hand you can't dirty talk with a straight face in Persian, since nobody has ever heard or read about it, it sounds super funny.

FromTheSteppe··on Did English ever have a formal version of "you"? (2011)
Is speaking to someone formally considered ending up in an inferior position in all cultures?

In Persian if someone expects to be spoken with formally, they have to speak formally themselves. So when you speak formally you're kinda bringing both parties up. You can even flirt by speaking formally.

FromTheSteppe··on Rust: The wrong people are resigning
And he's being called out for a 3 minutes comment.

I've seen Taliban media with slightly more integrity than rust leadership.

FromTheSteppe··on About three-in-ten U.S. adults say they are ‘almost constantly’ online (2021)
I was hammered by my parent into an educational success machine. Now that's all I can do.

I've been putting a considerable amount of my time into helping people for past 20 years, that doesn't mean people like to spend time with me outside work and studies.

I didn't do, and didn't learn how to do actives growing up, it's just awkward to others and I when I try. I even cook 5 course meals and workout at home.

Of course I'm going to be constantly online, games and forums are were I'm loved.

FromTheSteppe··on Black widows are losing to brown widows in the fight for attics and garages
I guess I'm not going to sleep until I forget about this in a few days...
