FriedPickles··on Policy: Generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT) is banned
How will they enforce this? There's no easy test if an LLM write a given post. Perhaps they can post honeypot questions.
FriedPickles··on NASA says Boeing Starliner astronauts may fly home on SpaceX in 2025
So you think it's bot that's intentionally adding spelling mistakes? I think it's more likely a human in an altered mental state.
FriedPickles··on Zulip 9.0: Organized chat for distributed teams
The acquisition Dropbox failed to kill.
FriedPickles··on Polychromatic Pixels
Yes, "panchromatic" is probably the more accurate term for it. It's just a camera with no color filters and a known spectral response curve that's high enough across the frequencies being imaged.
FriedPickles··on Polychromatic Pixels
Sure that would work. The higher the ratio of controlled/ambient light, and the slower you can do the sweep, the better for SNR of the hyperspectral image.
FriedPickles··on Polychromatic Pixels
An imager/camera: by illuminating a scene (or light box) solely with the tunable LED, sweeping it across the spectrum, and capturing it with an achromatic camera.
FriedPickles··on Polychromatic Pixels
I didn't realize we even had a discrete LED tunable across the visible spectrum, let alone a Micro-LED array of them. Anybody know where I can buy one? I want to build a hyperspectral imager.
FriedPickles··on Polychromatic Pixels
It can produce all the colors of the rainbow. But no magenta. Perhaps they can quickly pulse the LED enough between multiple wavelengths.
FriedPickles··on NASA map shows temperatures up to 160 degrees on Phoenix streets
Yes, it could cook an egg. But to boil an egg at 160ºf you'd have to be at the top of Everest.

VICE made a nice video on the shipbreaking here a few years back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JU0DXdAhdsA

FriedPickles··on The First Nuclear Microreactor Company Listed in the USA
Maybe it's the first to technically IPO, but it's not the first to be listed because OKLO just went public via merger with Sam Altman's SPAC AltC last week.
FriedPickles··on Apple and Google deliver support for unwanted tracking alerts in iOS and Android
It's possible to build your own tracker atop the Find My network without these anti-stalking features. The Find My network can even be abused for low bandwidth data transfer from any point in the world with an occasionally nearby iPhone.

FriedPickles··on Giant batteries are transforming the way the U.S. uses electricity
My time-of-use rate plan for PG&E (EV2-A) drops to its cheapest price at 12am–I'm guessing that's the cause of the spike. I start my car charging at 12:05am. I wish they offered an even more dynamic rate plan.
FriedPickles··on Horizontal running inside circular walls of Moon settlements

FriedPickles··on The Boring Phone
I love the transparent body.
FriedPickles··on NASA Technology Helps Guard Against Lunar Dust
I found more info in this paper: https://ntrs.nasa.gov/api/citations/20130012970/downloads/20...

It claims the dust is likely charged by solar radiation, but doesn't say the polarity. The paper mostly talks about using "dielectrophoretic forces"–forces experienced by any dielectric (polarizable) particle in a non-uniform electric field regardless of its net charge.

FriedPickles··on How do MRI Headphones work? (2022)
I was intrigued to see a lady at the crosswalk the other day wearing earbuds with thick tubing instead of wires. Googling it, I discovered they were "EMF free headphones". Apparently enough people think electromagnetic radiation in the ears is a problem that there are now dozens of these headphones on the market that put the driver half way along the cord, with tubes proceeding to the earpiece.
FriedPickles··on Show HN: Timelock.dev – Send a secret into the future using timelock encryption
The whistleblowers are not designated parties, they are just any Ethereum user. They would have a financial incentive for whistleblowing, and they could never falsely whistleblow because the smart contract can check whether they actually have the private key early or not.
FriedPickles··on Show HN: Timelock.dev – Send a secret into the future using timelock encryption
You could create a DeFi system not too unlike the one linked in this post: a number of oracles release keys at designated times (use M of N encryption).

The oracles could be financially incentivized to behave properly. E.g. they post a bond, which is confiscated if they don't post a private key on time or if a whistleblower discovers and reports a key early. In return for correct behavior they can earn some fees paid by users of the service.

The financial incentive still flips if the secret's value is sufficiently large, but it would require coordination of many unprincipled oracles.

FriedPickles··on Heat pumps outsold gas furnaces in 2023
Crazy idea: gas powered heat pump. Instead of just burning gas right into a heat exchanger as a furnace does, it burns it in an engine which turns the heat pump compressor. The house receives all of the heat transferred by the pump as well as the exhaust heat.

It's essentially the same thing that would be happening if you had a grid burning natural gas for electricity powering an electric heat pump, only it all happens locally and the exhaust heat is utilized. It's also similar to a "micro combined heat and power" system, with the power going directly into a heat pump.

EDIT: just discovered there's a smarter/simpler way to make a gas-powered heat pump: https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/absorption-heat-pumps.

The adapter connects the outer metal part of the connector for both USB-C and Magsafe to to ground, thus grounding the metal shell of the MacBook.
FriedPickles··on Amazon's Ring to stop letting police request doorbell video from users
Ring offers video end-to-end-encryption (E2EE) on at least some devices, in which case they can't access the footage even if they want to (short of sneaking it out of the app post decryption). I hope they'll find ways to support more features when E2EE is enabled over time.

FriedPickles··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2024 – Show and tell
Exactly. The Apple extension cord is grounded. They likely didn't include a grounding pin on the stock adapter because (1) it'd be really hard to make it fold down and (2) you lose the option of which direction to plug it in (potentially blocking a plug). So it's a design call.
FriedPickles··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2024 – Show and tell
Can't say I personally believe that claim, but there are a fair number of people out there who do. One person even sent formal test results showing that the adapter drastically reduces EMFs coming off the case. Not sure what to make of it but I found it interesting.

I got annoyed that my MacBook case would slightly buzz when plugged in, so I worked with a factory to make these grounded Apple adapters: https://www.amazon.com/Grounded-Duckhead-Apple-Mac-Adapter/d...

They've been selling consistently to others annoyed by the problem or who want to ground their MacBook for other reasons.

FriedPickles··on US government opens 22M acres of federal lands to solar

FriedPickles··on SpaceX launches 4 people for private mission to the International Space Station
No, but NASA's on the cusp of regaining the ability with SLS rocket/Orion capsule/Artemis program. First crewed launch targeted for Sept 2025.
FriedPickles··on I built an offline smart home
But they don't physically show their state, don't persist across power outages, and are much less satisfying to operate.
