FrankoDelMar··on One way to fight loneliness: Germans call it a Stammtisch
Not from Europe, but it reminds me of how Amsterdam has been actively discouraging young men from the UK from visiting because they have a reputation for being rowdy and getting in trouble.

FrankoDelMar··on Microplastics in the olfactory bulb of the human brain
As a mountaineer as well, thank you for capturing my shared frustration. Before synthetic bags, heavy canvas bags were used and typically required hiring a pack mule, donkey, or sherpa. Synthetics made mountaineering and the outdoors accessible to the common person.

Let's also not forget while down is natural, the material encapsulating it is usually not!

FrankoDelMar··on Microplastics in the olfactory bulb of the human brain
Yes, but our outer layers and bags are all synthetic.

I do hate fast fashion, but I can think of many exceptions where natural fibers won't cut it. There is no natural fabric product on the market that can properly replace lightweight, waterproof clothing. Waxed cotton is waterproof but heavy. Rubber is not breathable. Technical synthetics like Goretex have its issues (low durability, high cost, coated with PFAS), but it sure beats getting hypothermia.

FrankoDelMar··on How to succeed in MrBeast production (Leaked PDF)
Yeah, working constantly for a few years leaves permanent marks. You know what makes it better in ways we'll never have? Millions of dollars, luxury yachts, and fame. Mr. Beast isn't a doctor. He isn't a teacher. He doesn't fight our wars. He makes entertainment for children. He'll be fine.
FrankoDelMar··on UV-K5 is the most hackable handheld ham radio yet
The BC Link is a commonly used GMRS radio for backcountry enthusiasts.

https://backcountryaccess.com/en-us/c/bc-link-radios/

Any decently made GMRS radio should be fine for coordinating around the ski resort. I've had mixed results with FRS as the range is quite poor. This is amplified by the fact that the other party could be on a different face of the mountain as well as covered by trees. It's also convenient that many GMRS and FRS frequencies overlap, so if someone in your party only has an FRS radio or doesn't have a license, they can still communicate with GMRS users, assuming they're within range.

As another commenter pointed out a satellite communicator would be preferable in an emergency situation, as FRS/GMRS cannot be relied on to request emergency or rescue services. I keep a Garmin inReach Mini for this purpose.

My father used to do this too in Boston, but instead by jamming the slot with some kind of paper past the point of removing it. Extra points for using the orange colored envelope you got with your last parking ticket. Definitely was not a good lesson for a similarly aged me.

FrankoDelMar··on Why a spritz of water before grinding coffee yields better results
I wonder if, thanks to Reddit’s karma economy, the usage of /s is some kind of learned behavior that acts as hedge against downvotes. Did people use /s as much or at all back in the days of forums or other platforms where the visibility of a person’s content didn’t correlate with upvotes?
FrankoDelMar··on Why a spritz of water before grinding coffee yields better results
Correct, this is why people prefer burr mill grinders made of ceramic instead of metal since ceramic is more thermally insulating.

This exists in the US as well. In a situation where you need to make emergency maneuvers where you’re likely accelerating or decelerating quickly? Opps, your premium just went up.
FrankoDelMar··on Ask HN: What should I do with my leftover bandwidth?
I would agree it is good for society but considering the risk of getting shut down by your ISP or getting subpoenaed it tends to be poor advice except for the adventurous.

Besides nationalistic propaganda, I would imagine the root cause is a form of tribalism — the same reason people tend to root for their home sports team. For that reason, I also think being proud of something you had no choice in is understandable, but irrational. There is no way to be proud of one’s immutable identity without making a value judgement of the out group. Maybe unsurprisingly, Germans tend to be allergic to nationalism since they’re intimately familiar with its natural outcome.

This idea partially drives the demand for "Death Water" where they're not really selling water, but rather, an aesthetic.

Aren’t the limits in the US you mention more accurately described as the consequences of an action rather than the action itself? For example if you suggest a person to commit suicide and they actually do it, you could be held responsible for murder/manslaughter, but if that person didn’t do anything then it’s a much less severe crime. Similarly, at what point does saying fire in a theater become illegal? Do I have to yell? How loudly do I have to yell? What if the room is empty? What if I only said it loudly enough for the people adjacent to me can hear it? Or is it not the consequence of people panicking, possibly trampling over each other is what makes it illegal rather than the speech itself?

Another challenge is how we as a society view non-physical violence like emotional abuse, verbal abuse, gaslighting, and infidelity. Punch a person in the face and it leaves obvious physical markings. Yet cheat on your spouse with their best friend, and coordinate with your spouse's family and friends to gaslight your spouse into believing they're crazy and you're much less likely to be caught. I genuinely believe the psychopaths that live among us have a vested interest in ensuring that psychological abuse is very difficult, if not impossible to prosecute. And I would much rather be punched.
