Fordec··on Shortsightedness has become an epidemic
Short answer, yes.

Long answer, you'll need to really jack up the power consumption. Replicating a thing that in itself an energy source needs waaaay more than just a 60W light bulb.

Fordec··on New GitHub Profile Badges Beta
Just because HN is a fun free zone, some evidently believe the rest of the world has to be also. The only way I can understand some of the reactions in this thread is that many are holding a belief the only reason to use Github is your anonymous desk job. Like the question of does the "YOLO" achievement apply to your automated CI pipeline is itself giving away private information by implication.

I'm over here with 80% of my commit history just being recipe markdown.

Fordec··on Java record pattern matching in JDK 19
I also think of API ergonomics. Unspecified input with the same single endpoint, while under the hood will be absolute spaghetti, from a developer adoption standpoint can be make or break.

And if you're strongly typing your system rather than relying on strings, extra so.

Fordec··on Ultimaker and Makerbot merge to form new 3D printing company
This sale of $62.4m is quite the fall from when Stratsys bought Makerbot origionally for $604m.

Says it all really.

Fordec··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
> let Stephen Fry host his own server that he has to actively curate

I've barely had my coffee, and I've already seen the most "HN living in a bubble" comment of the day.

Fordec··on HackerRank (YC S11) DMCA'ed the SymPy Docs [fixed]
What are decent HackerRank alternatives out on the market at the moment?
Fordec··on Stabilization of gamma sulfur enables 4000 cycle Li-S batteries [pdf]
I'll take "How we end up with scientists running around in circles making the same mistakes over and over." for $500.

If you goal is to learn about things once they're stable and working, I suggest drop reading science journalism from your schedule and just start window shopping at electronics stores.

Fordec··on List Of Adhesive Tapes
It's also missing Z-tape. Double sided sticky tape that only electrically conducts in the z-axis. Great for where you would traditionally solder a component to a PCB but you don't want it to be a permanent fixture. https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/d/b10167835/
Fordec··on Large-Scale Matrix Factorization on TPUs
The sooner specialized hardware comes out the better in my books. The sooner companies deliver it, the sooner patents will inevitably expire and we can get some open source implementations. The golden age of ASICs for everyone is a decade or two away yet. But the sooner that day comes, the better for those of us who want the ownership of it. I'd love to integrate an embedded GPU for an onboard AI into my hobby electronics projects with a low power overhead. We're just not quite there yet.
Fordec··on Ask HN: When did 7 interviews become “normal”?
People have jobs and lives. The only people this gets are unemployed and self employed people who have nothing to lose or the time to spare. This strategy poaches nobody of worth with an ounce of self respect.
Fordec··on Mapping and Seizing the Oligarchs' Assets
Thanks, but I have a copy of the book on hand already.

In the book de Mesquita refers to regardless of whether the system is Authoritarian or Democratic, rulers have to please their respective circle of power brokers. The only difference is the number they have to placate. And the US is not the prototypical example of the most democratic and grassroots political system out there by a long shot.

To say I believe Biden has been on his throne for 22 years is such a blatant strawman, I find it difficult to take you seriously. Even if he was a Senator since 1973 who clearly knows how to stay afloat in politics for 49 years.

Fordec··on Mapping and Seizing the Oligarchs' Assets
Russia already announced they are doing so for any company that shuts down operations (even temporarily) in Russia that have 25% or more foreign control last week.

This talk now is in response to Russia acting in that manner first.

Fordec··on Mapping and Seizing the Oligarchs' Assets
And Bezos, Bloomberg, Ellison, Thiel, etc. aren't quasi state actors?
Fordec··on UK rejects opening borders to Ukraine refugees
And yet, Ireland a country next door, with 5m people vs UKs 67m already going through it's own housing crisis to take on 100,000 [0].

Fordec··on Chris Lattner left Swift core team
If you're 100% in on Apple, it's probably fine. Outside that ecosystem, Kotlin, Go or Rust are all probably better investments of learning time depending on the problem you're tackling.

The question more is, is bothering to learn native smartphone app development a bad investment of time now that the low hanging fruit is gone and we're due for a new platform paradigm?

Fordec··on Chris Lattner left Swift core team
I neither expect Rust to go off the rails, but the Core developer team drama lately and Mozilla stepping away makes it that I will neither be surprised in the even that it does.
Fordec··on A 13-year-old used my artificial nose to diagnose pneumonia
From working on the environmental sensor side of things, I'd concur. The VOCs will be able to be picked up, but the cross talk will be huge across other VOCs that don't themselves indicate pneumonia. There isn't one VOC, there's thousands. False positives are written all over this. This is the very same approach Theranos went. On a science level, sure, technically possible maybe. You'll even get boolean outputs. But on an engineering and regulatory level, you're in for a world of pain without the spectral tech that is still 2-5 years away before this is worth basing human lives on.
Fordec··on What does it mean to listen on a port?
As OOP is to languages, Sockets, to me, is to networking.
Fordec··on Lasershark: Fast, bidirectional communication into air-gapped systems
Lots of electronics in industrial environments (eg. ATEX ratings) in potentially explosive environments typically have this problem. But magnetic transfer is far lower data rate than this.
Fordec··on Analysis of Magic Leap 2 at SPIE AR/VR/Mr 2022
I'm not entirely sure it is. Pass through has serious engineering hurdles to get over first with latency, power consumption, weight etc.

But the waveguide method has limitations rooted in physics and math that won't change until 30%+70% stops equalling 100%.

I know which one I'd put more Hope's in.

Fordec··on North Korean internet downed by suspected cyber attacks
It routes around failures, the timelines for delivery are not promised though.
Fordec··on Why Ireland's housing bubble burst
Most of the government policy at the time can be tied to bribes by developers. Look up "brown envelopes"[0] or the subsequent Mahon (formerly Flood) tribunal.

Fordec··on NASA: Tonga blast was 10 megatons, more powerful than a nuclear bomb
That's all from space. I'm guessing they mean, as I also mean, on the ground footage that isn't getting off the island yet due to the connectivity issues.
Fordec··on Large Eruption Near Tonga, Heard in NZ. Tsunami at Tonga and Fiji
They won't slow it, but pause effects for a short while. The CO2 would still be there afterwards and all the while increasing, the oceans will still be acidifying, etc.

The next years after would still be as bad as predicted

Fordec··on NASA says Webb’s excess fuel likely to extend its lifetime expectations
Swarm breached the "Mitigation of Orbital Debris Second Report and Order" which has been in place since 2004[0], for their launch on an Indian rocket because their 0.5Us would breach this and their aerodynamics wouldn't comply because the satellites were so small and didn't have enough atmospheric drag to bring them down in time. The tracked by radar aspect was resolvable by Leo Labs radars, but not the atmospheric drag component.

FCC subsequently fined them $900k.

Fordec··on NASA says Webb’s excess fuel likely to extend its lifetime expectations
A few, but he one that is the closest rubber that hits the road is part of the FCC filing for radio spectrum access on satellite projects. Without which, you're not getting on most rockets.
Fordec··on NASA says Webb’s excess fuel likely to extend its lifetime expectations
Also don't forget it at no point can it turn around and face the earth or sun or the light coming from the suns direction will burn out the optics. If it does it once, and it's mission over. All the while essentially driving most of the way up out of the gravity well and letting it get pulled back to earth a little and repeating. If it goes too far over the peak of the hill it will go over the other side with no way to reverse even if the rocket has the fuel.
Fordec··on NASA says Webb’s excess fuel likely to extend its lifetime expectations
And those satellites, by bulk, are in low earth orbit with a lifetime of usually 4 years, and a legally mandated reentry in 25 years.

JWTs location in L2 (a mathematically unstable location that requires energy to not roll back into a gravity well in any direction) is like putting it on the satellite equivalent of K2 and not coming down from the peak for 20 years and you compare it to the thousands of commuters that made it up the hill down the road from your house.

Fordec··on Google Had Secret Project to ‘Convince’ Employees ‘That Unions Suck’
Half the population are conservatives at least, which is what I mean regards to reverting to the mean in a geographic area. Plenty of people are not libertarians but just base level, Fox news repeating (eg. Hillarycare), auth-right quadrant conservative and are ashamed of the moniker.
Fordec··on Google Had Secret Project to ‘Convince’ Employees ‘That Unions Suck’
From my experience, I find this is true only in the very core of core tech hubs that you can count on one hand. And also with a bias towards finance, adtech, crypto, fintech and other industries that rely on extracting wealth than creating it.

Core R&D, hardware, B2B services, networking companies, etc. and then also the factor of geographic places that aren't considered "sexy" in the HN crowd revert to the mean for that geographic area in regards to the mix of political leanings.

I disagree it's about hard work, but about ego about how society deserves to value them. That correlates only really under the age of 35 before their first health scare when suddenly society owes something to them that they never previously wanted to feed a cent into.
