FluidDjango··on PayPal Hates Conferences – Especially OpenCamp
The problem is that PP empowers bureaucrats (like the "Kathleen" identified in the OpenCamp story) to act capriciously, without reference to pre-established (and pre-published) standards and policies.

One commenter below the OC story describes how he has used the PP/EventBrite combination successfully and comfortably for a couple years. That's great for him (for now).

The problem is the unpredictability of how PP may treat any customer in the future, without regard for their past performance/association with PP (as in the OC case).

Personally, given the number of (unresolved/unexplained) horror stories I have heard with PP, I would not advise anyone (ANYone) to risk any business connection with PP (beyond what they are perfectly happy to lose) - no more than I advise people to take their retirement funds to a casino.

FluidDjango··on Bespin Bookmarklet: edit code or other text on any page with a textarea
Pretty slick. They seem already to be updating it (compared to their demo's display).
FluidDjango··on Knuth's 'Earthshaking Announcement' due tomorrow
Oh the timeliness of wp: Interesting how many features of those Dubai items are still described as "will be completed in" ...2008 or ...2009.
FluidDjango··on IPhone 4: the Ars Technica review
The communications-psychologist in me found this observation about FaceTime interesting (the author seemed to warm to FT as he spent time with it, even to the point of productive "meetings"):

>You almost feel as if you need to talk about something substantial when you're looking at the person.

FluidDjango··on [dead]
Didn't even know such indispensable iconoclasm was hosted anywhere. Tart, yes. But not quite "The Onion."

More surprising to me are:

 • How slowly its tiny web pages load.

 • How stuck its html is in cira 1998, now-deprecated tags.

 • The anonymity - and the fact that the author doesn't

want credit for harpooning everyone from JC to pope to Clinton.

FluidDjango··on Why the Soda Tax makes us angry; people do what they're forbidden
The title posted here distorts the meaning of the second sentence of original paragraph, which says, "Higher prices are bad. Being told what to do is worse." As the article points out, being taxed is _not_ same as being forbidden.

Also, there seem to be _two_ agendas for the tax: 1)raising tax money and 2) discouraging consumption of "empty calories." I can't tell from the story whether legislators have prioritized between the two.

If it's the first... then bottled water (who virtue/worth is a whole other discussion) could be taxed as well.

If it's the second... then aspartame (or plain water) ought to be favored over sugar/corn_syrup by the tax. And that is rather like taxing cigarettes, alcoholic beverages, etc.: essentially taxing risky (or costly-to-public-welfare) behavior.

FluidDjango··on Safari 5
Well, Safari5 Reader's approach may make that feel less necessary - since one can easily click in and out of Reader-view.

And an advantage (as I test-drive it) is that turning the Reader-view on/off for a given article is almost instantaneous: whereas with Readability to move _out_ of Readability-View involves _reloading_ the entire page (which I find annoyingly slow on pages like TechCrunch, RWW, etc where there are tons of ads to be (re)loaded.

I think the Safari-Reader approach may increase time I spend with a full, ad-laden page open.

FluidDjango··on Steve Jobs live from WWDC 2010
Jobs said that Apple had worked out "an arrangement" or some such with Cisco.
FluidDjango··on Steve Jobs live from WWDC 2010
I seem to recall he said the "only on wifi" was a temporary thing - while "we work with cell carriers" (I noted the plural: carrierS).
FluidDjango··on AT&T Gives Up on the iPad 3G Unlimited Data Plan
When I googled regarding alternative carriers and iPad a couple days ago I had trouble finding clear statements of this.

What I did find was the sale of $60-$100 devices/dongles that would enable you to use your iPad with T-Mobile, Verizon, etc.

Is it not only me that has trouble finding a clear statement about this (esp. on store.apple.com)?

FluidDjango··on AT&T Gives Up on the iPad 3G Unlimited Data Plan
You have a lot of faith in the pro-consumer stance of courts.
FluidDjango··on AT&T's new data plans: $25/2GB cap, tethering +$20
I'm on the sidelines, not yet being ATT customer, but have * existing customers* received notification?

The "news" on ATT is TLDR, to figure out all parameters, but note that the Apple store (http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_ipad/family/ipad) still shows old rates. Wonder what happens if I buy iPad from Apple when site gives old rate... what leverage would I have against rate increases. Anyone yet read details on the plan they signed up for - regarding changes?

FluidDjango··on Student fined for bringing university into disrepute with FitFinder site
Not exactly the way for a university to encourage a local "Silicon Valley" to develop around it.
FluidDjango··on Ask HN: What are most innovative college programs in online/digital instruction?
Thanks for that feedback. Searching about Angel reveals it's been purchased (as others have) by Blackboard. The past behavior of BB suggests this may not upgrade BB as much as it may just reduce the competition.

Where is the Linux of courseware?

FluidDjango··on Rival tablets ready to bite into iPad lead
It's just the headline (hoping to be link bait).

The substance of the article warrants something more like: "Rival tablets hoping to bite into iPad lead." But you know the effect of competitive pressures among media.

FluidDjango··on Apple Sold 2 Million iPads In 59 Days
Although my family members have the iPad bug, my major concern is what sort of impact these sales (plus next iPhone) are going to have on flash memory supplies/prices (short-term).
FluidDjango··on A Tale of Two Students
This is a WSJ "Saturday Essay."

It is descriptive, a case study (of two cases).

There is no way of assessing what significantly differing factors (besides their high schools) were unmentioned/unknown yet influencial for these two teens.

It establishes no causation.

Only value of article is to demonstrate some of the strategies/opportunities that a charter school _may be_ at liberty to exploit. Oh, how severely education suffers from lack of capable research.

FluidDjango··on Slate's experiment on implanting false memories
The fact that "it" is not revealed by google means without doubt... that photoshoppers are running behind.
FluidDjango··on Michael Arrington interviews Carol Bartz
Interesting. To me MA's headline gave me the sense that Bartz must have signed off in disgust or something. But who can explain the motives of "stringers" (or whatever the title of blog employees who write headlines today).
FluidDjango··on Michael Arrington interviews Carol Bartz
For this kind of interview you really need audio. Not hearing her inflection makes me wonder... why did Arrington/editor put her instruction to him in quotes?:

> CB: ... You are involved in a very tiny company.

> MA: Very tiny.

> CB: It probably takes some time just to convince yourself what to do. “So f*#k off!”

Anyway... enables him to provide a link-bait title to the "interview."

FluidDjango··on New BN eReader: iPad's first real competition?
I know it's been said so often before, but "specs don't bring in the general public."

For B&N to make any inroads, they're going to have to do something more than build huge, dead product display areas like the one at my local BN store. Anyone see action around the "Nook" displays at their BNs?

FluidDjango··on Tell HN: Add a '+' to the end of any bit.ly link to get the full URL.
Unfortunately, nagging about shorteners seems to work on average surfers, posters about as well as a teetotaler's sermon to an alcoholic.

And thus uber-shortening will probably continue until someone develops alternative processes that are ~sexier~

FluidDjango··on IBM Distributes Malware-Infected USB Sticks At Security Conference
CNET report (w/o Forbes paywall):http://news.cnet.com/8301-27080_3-20005673-245.html

Didn't the attendees realize that there would be a post-test at the conclusion the security conference? That's what the USB stick experience was. Can't wait to see what "grades" attendees received :/

I can see China, Cuba, and Burma doing that. Are you sure you'd want to read what their 'journalists' would write?

FluidDjango··on Facebook is a utility; utilities get regulated
Utilities get regulated generally when they are exempted from anti-monopoly restraints and given special access to a population.

Anyone is free to launch an alternative and compete with FB as FB did with MySpace.

FluidDjango··on The Enemy Within: What is Conficker's Botnet For?
It sure is hard to keep the general public's attention when there are no dramatic, overt symptoms yet.

Who knows what sort of pain they're going to inflict (or cost they'll exact) once they choose to monetize?

FluidDjango··on What if Zuck invented the web?
Actually, there's evidence (plenty posted on HN) that he's still hitting the snooze button.
FluidDjango··on China is choking the Internet

FluidDjango··on Adobe abuses AdSense to force “We Love Apple” pop-ups for Mac, Opera users
Ah, so my ClickToFlash has deprived me of these important salvos. Bless it!
