I, however, would gladly permit myself to be scanned on condition that I never had to view the body scans of any of the aforementioned government employees.
That being said, being scanned (and especially having some files stored for unknown length of time) seems to be a very unpleasant prospect for many people. And...
There is going to be a huge outcry when (not if) some TSA employee starts posting some images online - or having a huge stash of them found on their personal computer. Count on it happening.
It's an unsigned/unattributed essay that is long on weasel words (as wikipedia would put it, e.g., "Many of its 2,000 members..."), short on evidence (a few quotes attributed to identified individuals) and devoid of quantification ("tech leaders have been outraged by..." what proportion? did some take a poll?)
Economics tries to be a quantitative behavioral science. This piece, however...

Depression can come in response to specific ("depressing") circumstances or events, and it can come from hormonal or biochemical conditions. Depending on cause, different professional routes may be helpful.
Other contributing conditions (e.g., social isolation; career confusion) may be addressed well be a counselor worth their salt. [ Keep in mind that how 'loudly' you complain about how awful you feel will affect how much the counselor accelerates (or not) getting you more significant/experienced assistance. ] The 'right' counselor should be able to convey to you that they take your issues seriously and that they genuinely care about you and finding solution(s) that work for you.
Friends can provide some of the support and perspective that a professional counselor does, but usually not enough when you've really got yourself into a clinical depression. Plus a professional will have guidelines to know whether you are a candidate for referral to someone who can consider whether an anti-depressant might be worth trying. I'd encourage you to keep looking until you find a professional who's really an effective ally during these trying times.

Being Apple, could they possible have a joint announcement planned for both the facility and for a total makeover of XServe line (emphasizing GreenPower, price-wise farm-suitable servers). Would it not be embarrassing for Apple to stock the place with a non-Apple product? At the same time, would it not be absurd to risk the success of a data center this size on an (relatively) inefficient, second-rate hardware config?
Either way, it should be an opportunity for a huge Apple PR event.

Presumably they think that aggravating their readers they'll be able to hasten their suicide. I support that ambition for all such user-hostile practitioners of 'journalism.'
Also, perhaps you've tweaked it since some of the other comments, but two-finder scrolling (MBP trackpad, Safari 5.0.2) works great for me. Took me a while to figure that I needed to shrink window enough to see scroll bars (and thus be able to scroll and manipulate luminosity.
I've got it bookmarked, so if you are generous enough to keep it at aurlien.net I'll definitely make a lot of use of it. Great work && great service.
But the type of issues that aggravate Pogue are exactly what annoy me in software UX. Someone's going to have to write an mighty effective rejoinder to his review of MS Office to get me to follow this "upgrade."
And there's the problem with presenting a bar graph showing linear growth over the next few years, followed by a text that says the claim is for "exponential" growth over the next few years.
FYI: When I'm on my pokey DSL I notice something weird in playing your demo video: when my DSL can't feed data into your video player fast enough, the player jumps me back to the start of the video (rather than pausing and signaling that it's buffering).
Anyone know of competitors to green dot?

Well, if you're an undergrad and your school is inflicting Blackboard or Desire2Learn software, you find the sluggishness on older machines to be agony. In my humble experience.
Related FWIW: when I, as instructor, am perusing student records or developing a course, I am grateful for a 27" iMac. Tiny screens add to the BB/D2L sluggishness. [/rant]

Looking at the title provides clue to human behavior: then there is no need to ask "why do people resist accepting what they hate."
Simple principles of shaping behavior suggest one simple principle: reinforcement: offer discount for using coins (i.e., $1.01 of merchandise for a $1 coin) or transaction penalty for paying with notes.
As the article points out this would take "an act of Congress." There is an excellent reason that "act of Congress" is a figure of speech meaning ~Herculean feat of struck-by-lightening probability~
