Flozzin··on Peter Thiel helped build big tech. Now he wants to tear it all down
Just want to call out your 2% of the population claim. While maybe it is, 'technically correct', it gives a false impression. Slaves were counted among the population, thus skewing the number. Also, wives/women would not be counted as owning slaves, even if their husbands did. Same could be said about their children.

"The 1860 census shows that in the states that would soon secede from the Union, an average of more than 32 percent of white families owned enslaved people. Some states had far more slave owners (46 percent of families in South Carolina, 49 percent in Mississippi) while some had far fewer (20 percent of families in Arkansas)." Flozzin··on The Elves Leave Middle Earth – Sodas Are No Longer Free (2009)
I agree with this. When management think in money only, that's a good sign for me to leave. If they think that happy employees are just magically happy, and don't care about making employees happy, that is just ignorance. Don't happy employees perform better? Does employee performance not matter? Profits have long been the end goal for American companies, and it's too bad. Chasing money, instead of treating employees well, treating the community well, and treating the environment well, is a bad way to run a business, and we are all suffering for it now.
Flozzin··on Chronic lower back pain linked to atrophy in pain-related brain regions
I’ve noticed this with alcohol. 1 or 2 drinks will create/intensify the pain. But a couple more will put it down. It’s curbed my drinking since I rarely want to get drunk.
Flozzin··on Crime scene investigators learn to dowse for the dead
I'm going to play devils advocate here. We already know that the observer effect is real. We have no idea on what level the spiritual world is in. I would find it logical, that if we ever do discover that this paranormal realm we can tap into is real, that one of the reasons we ignored it so long is that, our intentions have much to do with it. So participating in studies to prove its real would effect how it behaves.

Personally.. I highly doubt its real, else we would have more people doing this full time. There were also the divining rods that were bomb detectors(https://slate.com/technology/2013/04/dowsing-for-bombs-maker...).

People are crazy with what we will and won't believe. With varying levels of proof on each side...

Flozzin··on What’s Wrong with “Explainable A.I.”
Interesting article. I think that, without deeper insights into machine learning it will be very difficult to make it better. At best, like the article says, we can guess why it made its decision. But we really don't know for sure. It seems like we will end up tweaking algorithms until we get the 'best' model, but will it ever be truely correct. Or just happen to be mostly correct. Does it really know what its looking for, or does it just guess correctly most of the time. Calling machine learning 'it' is probably already a step too far.
Flozzin··on I Eat for Free in NYC Using Python, Automation, AI, and Instagram
I'd have to agree. I was looking for where he talked about reviewing the restaurants and I didn't see it. He even says he gives away some of the free meals to friends and family, so I doubt he forces them to do the review either.
Flozzin··on Are “safe” levels of air pollution safe?
I would think it’s not all the same, and point out asbestos has very bad side effects. So I too would rather breathe paper than other things. Ideally just air though.
Flozzin··on Walgreens replaced some fridge doors with screens, and some shoppers hate it
It would be shocking and the first time ever if the sales pitch of a product was completely made up and false. And the product turned out to be worse than the current solution in place. /s

I wouldn't recommend this. If you do use lead soldering, make sure you don't breathe in any fumes.

Spoken like a person whose never experienced -20f weather. I’m teasing not looking for a “weather off”.
Flozzin··on Ask HN: Can anybody else not use their computer for much other than coding?
Downtime is important. If there is something on the computer you would like to do but can't, because you feel you should always be working or improving skills, then that is a problem. But if there is nothing else you'd want to be doing on the computer, then who cares. As long as you have some other activities. No one should dump all their time into their career or hobby. Some people do, but it's not healthy.

But, to answer your question directly. I read news, watch streaming services, play video games all on my personal PC. I don't feel guilty. I put a lot of effort into my work, when working. I realize I need time for fun and relaxing, as well as exercise(although I could be way better at getting it). In order for me to perform at my best at work, I can't be burned out or drained, and these other activities help that.

Flozzin··on I’m not convinced by the new lab leak debunking
I would think, the US or practically any other country would have a huge incentive to be able to blame China for this entire mess. And those incentives would far outweigh having to move a few labs. Plus, "It's China's bad practices that put the world at risk, not the great wonderful lab practices that happen in the US." That would be the line.

There would also be notoriety for the person that would blow the lid off a lab leak. There are plenty of other industries that have eaten there own.

Flozzin··on There’s no need to change passwords if they're robust, unique and not breached
This only applies to banking and email passwords. And most last over a year. I don't have a schedule, just one morning I wake up and go, 'oh yea, I've been using that password since 2019...'.
Flozzin··on There’s no need to change passwords if they're robust, unique and not breached
I update my passwords from time to time. I don't trust the organizations will always say if there is breach, know there is a breach, or actually know how far and wide a breach went.
Flozzin··on Is it stealing to read by the light of your neighbour’s lamp?
Article feels like a bait and switch. They pose the question, ask if WIFI is any different. Never tries to answer the question and instead dives in WFH and compensation. Strangely they pose questions, but never answer any.
Flozzin··on A police dog who cried drugs at every traffic stop
But this is great right? What you just wrote? I'm confused now. Is this what you wanted me to say? This is why I point you to research books or articles. Or even follow actual politicians on what work they are doing. I'm not going to have this. I'm a software developer removed from the issue mostly.

But if you know that black people are more likely convicted than a white person(they also get longer sentences for the same crimes), then why are you asking as if you don't know. Overall, you've ended up raising more questions than answering...

Flozzin··on A police dog who cried drugs at every traffic stop
What do you mean by, 'it's too vague to confer any kind of understanding'
Flozzin··on A police dog who cried drugs at every traffic stop
Racism, indifference, otherizing, victim blaming, self re-enforcing cycles/punishments(https://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/19/opinion/charles-blow-how-..., is a great example of how we pile on fines)

If you want me to point to a single person or law I can't. There are hundreds of them, but very few of them written today are based on the color of your skin, the politicians got wise to that. If you really want to dive into this topic. Then I suggest reading a book or article that covers the topic of racism in America today. Preferably written by a POC.

Flozzin··on A police dog who cried drugs at every traffic stop
There is a lot of information out there on this topic. But I will try to summarize my understanding of what goes on in the USA.

There is institutional racism in our system. These are laws from long ago, that stick around due to inertia. They end up punishing POC more. When changing these laws comes up for debate, it's not that hooded KKK stand up and protect them, it's that the laws been around for decades. The laws don't affect the majority white population. They are defended uses words like, lazy, poor, criminals, bad part of town...Those words don't tend to bring to mind white middle class people. Then the laws stick around. Or new laws are pass using the same methods.

You don't have to say racist things in the US in order to defend racist laws. There are a myriad of code words you can use instead. Also, many people don't realize just how racist we are as a culture. The Christian church in America has deep racism issues.(read White Too Long by Robert P. Jones)

The US population has been raised by generations of racists so we just literally don't see it anymore. It doesn't affect the majority, so it isn't an issue. Each time a problem is brought up, it's usually dismissed out of hand. We love our victim blaming, our blind eyes, our justifications, and our fear.

Yes, there are massive incentives and money to be made in the criminal justice system. But they only exist because of who they are keeping down. And why don't we care about the ones being kept underfoot?

Flozzin··on New evidence that British workplaces are losing viewpoint diversity
Yes. And crime and poverty is related. Also, when more crime occur, police tend to congregate. So if police are pulling people over for minor traffic violations, and then discovering drugs, the 'crime' rate goes up. This then exacerbates the stats.

My point is, pure stats should never be the only source of information. One may not think the police are racist, and instead think that crime and poverty are related. But over policing of the poor doesn't magically make them wealthy.

The policing issue in the US is complicated.

Flozzin··on New evidence that British workplaces are losing viewpoint diversity
To me bad faith is also just lying. You lie about your motives and intentions. You lie about the other's sides motives and intentions. Bad faith actors also prop up a lot of straw men in order to tear them down, but disengage or put words in the mouth of direct opponents. They make concrete statements, then back away and act like they never said if called out for it, or can't back up their assumption with evidence.

Bad faith arguments are more about scoring points or making that person feel better. It's never about the actual policy. So it allows the bad faith actor freedom to say whatever they want, as long as they come out ahead.

Flozzin··on GameStop, Bitcoin and the Commoditization of Populist Rage
I'm getting the impression that since the author overstates his case, by using a quote by Hobbes, his entire point is invalid. Therefor, millennials must accept their fate. And the fact that their lives will be worse than previous generations doesn't matter. Because the Hobbes quote is misused, and because other people have way worse lives.

I disagree. So what if he misused the quote. His overall point is valid. And other people have it worse, that's unfair, we should do everything in our power to improve everyones lives. And all backsliding should be protested.

Flozzin··on Zero arrests in 6 months of health care professionals replacing police officers
Going to add to this.

A jury of ones 'peers' is rarely the case either. Yes, they are citizens, but they are rarely of the same background, ethnicity, or social status. They are hand selected by lawyers to remove people that might be sympathetic to your plight.

I've never heard that jurors are the best and brightest among us. Often the highly educated and analytical are removed from jury pool.

Flozzin··on Zero arrests in 6 months of health care professionals replacing police officers
This is what I was looking for or I was going to post myself.

Why is the risk of being involuntarily committed so much greater than having a cop do the same. Or a cop just throwing you in jail? The anecdotes of peoples loved ones being 'committed and only getting released when the money runs dry', seems far more preferable than their loved ones being thrown in jail and released when they can pay the bond. Or sit in jail and wait for a judge.

Flozzin··on The war on food waste is a waste of time
It's easier to tear something down than to build something. This is why people write articles like this. They acknowledge the problem, claim to be on the 'correct' side of the issue and do nothing! It's not their fault all the options are bad. People like this continue the status quo while acting like they want to move to better solutions.
Flozzin··on The Future of Fossil Fuels
Full disclosure. I mostly skimmed the article.

They start off citing a prediction that didn't come true, then they bravely predict the coming end of oil. Next they show that fossil fuels are getting less expensive as a sign that they are failing. A few paragraphs later, make that claim that since renewables are getting cheaper, they will take over. That doesn't make sense in my opinion. Both things get cheaper yet for gas it's a sign it's failing and for renewables it's a sign it's gaining strength. Their graph for this is only 3 years in the past. Seems cherry picked.

I don't trust this person's analytical skills, and thus their prediction. Honestly with the article starting the way it does I would say this is satire.

Flozzin··on For every 100 girls/women
If you can show there is x group that has it worse, you can usually get funding/money to help fix the problem.

It's all about framing. And while I applaud the idea of not bucketting people, it's not how the world operates. It's easier to get money to feed children than it is adults, or just, 'the hungry'.

I was half joking.

I read an article from dollar shave club a while ago on the subject. Apparently some men do it. Just a warning, their articles are closer to click bait than to journalism.
