I'd love to see a video demo of Improv.

Flow··on Why I no longer contribute to Racket
Yes, reading the comment you comment on feels not right.

In my opinion, I'd love to have a teacher like Simon Peyton Jones. I'm sure SPJ have bad days, but he feels like a person that would actually tell me about it instead of starting to throw around mean comments to test the alpha male hierarchy.

And imagine being the kind of person that have a good day and throw around mean comments? I don't think anyone should "learn" to tolerate such a person. They can go be brilliant alone somewhere, IMHO. If it really is brilliant, we'll see the fruits of it somehow anyway.

Someone as enthusiastic as SPJ could teach me anything, I'm sure.

On the other hand, I may have way fewer meetings than many others that might get invited to the same meetings, so I understand it can be hard to find a time where everyone is available.

I've only been to one company that had a sane meeting culture. Along with every meeting invitation there were attached documents that you were expected to read. You were expected to have notes and comments ready. The meetings mostly were not supposed to be a time where you worked vague things out.

Flow··on Klarna users are being signed in to random accounts
Klarna wants to be Facebook of payment. When I buy and pay with Klarna, they get the list of items and on Klarna's app and homepage I see pictures of whatever it is I bought.

I'm not sure what to think about this. My first thought is "Is this really legal?".

Flow··on CPU Bugs (2018)
I think Intel was more concerned about the time it took to make a new CPU rather than the cost. At least that was my impression of it at the time.

That testing is a cost is a given. But it's a known cost compared to what a huge batch of faulty CPU's can cost. Or how about a ruined reputation, how do you even know what that could cost you?

I suppose Intel already use a lot of automated testing, but given all the bugs since the change it seems it is not enough.

Flow··on CPU Bugs (2018)
When this news broke I though Intel lost their mind.

Did they really intend to just "skip" validation or did they try to automate it further, to decrease time to produce a new chip?

Flow··on YouTube ads in Safari: you see them now, will you see them in the future?
I use Wipr as a content blocker on both macOS and iOS. I never see ads on YouTube. But I've always felt that it might not be enough some day. Perhaps that day is nearly here.
Flow··on Poor in Tech
I once read a AskReddit about people who worked for extremely rich people.

Many said that the old man and wife, who built the fortune, were nice humble people that understood that they are so lucky to have made it in life. Many comments also said that their children were absolute spoiled brats who were the exact opposite to humble.

Flow··on Poor in Tech
I grew up poor(but no longer am). I can sympathize with some of the things she wrote, but not very many. I too talk to the janitor and cleaners. I once had a job like that.

What strikes me is that she describes a work-life that are quite a few years long, perhaps even decades, and she still is dirt poor apparently.

I know that no-one just gives money away, but how come she lives a frugal life and after years of working still is extremely poor?

Her writing makes me think she thinks like a beaten dog. Either she is exaggerating/lying or she has some other problems that are not actually money-related.

Yeah, I had like 3 upvotes and then boom, were back up 0 points.

Weirdly, I don't feel what I wrote was even negative against China.

Flow··on LiveLeak shuts down after 15 years online
The ISIS slaughter house video is stuck in my mind. Lots of orange dressed and back-tied prisoners hanging on hooks. One is on the floor and they slowly cut/grind off his head with gurgling bloody noises. I read that everyone in that room is high of drugs. Prisoners and executioner.

But then, and this makes me want to shut the borders around EU and North America and a few Asian countries, you watch some gore videos from South America and you realize that ISIS has nothing on these drug cartels.

The drug cartels are truly completely fucked in the heads. And they slowly ruin country after country. It's just a question of time before we see strong presence of US/UN military and drug deregulation(whether you want it or not) to prevent a complete collapse of those societies and the whole of South America. Or maybe I've seen too many horrible gore videos?

Flow··on LiveLeak shuts down after 15 years online
This is a big loss and it comes at a time where it will soon be more needed than ever.

The last years has been brutal to "free information". Ever since Trump became president it seems a lot of people has begged the tech giants to filter and censor. And now they do.

I remember early 2020 when rumors about a new virus in China came out. There were very little news about it. But on YouTube and Twitter you could find scary videos of Chinese police/military in hazmat suits welding shut doors to big apartment complexes. You could find pictures and videos of roads with huge piles of dirt on it to block any traveling. There were secretly filmed videos where people just collapsed on the streets and in the waiting rooms at the hospitals.

Contrast that with the glorious 2021 online experience.

Go to YouTube and search for "India covid crisis" and you'll be met with pages and pages of news reports from the big news corporations.

I don't know about you, but this is not the result I expect. In fact, it feels dystopian and scary and that YouTube has lost its purpose.

Windows 10 in dark mode is just horrible. Overlapping windows are really hard to see where one begins and another ends.

I long for Windows 3.11/OS2 Warp style window decoration with goofy distinct colors and a menu bar in every app. These days all apps in Windows hate the menu and hides it.

Flow··on Falling sperm counts, declining egg quality, and endocrine disruptors
I think many health problems are related to not a few single causes, but to a cocktail of problems, some chemical, other purely lifestyle(sleep, food, exercise).

It's humbling how much AND little we know about processes in the body. Just read the article and comments some days ago about antidepressants. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26197140

Flow··on Go 1.16 will make system calls through Libc on OpenBSD
Not sure what you are advocating here.

If someone successfully injects code that perform a direct syscall they can successfully use this info leak despite a safe and patched (g)libc.

Flow··on Go 1.16 will make system calls through Libc on OpenBSD
> All except some of the most recent arm64 processors have a speculative execution flaw that occurs across a syscall boundary, which cannot be mitigated in the kernel.

Big Ouch. I wonder how the Linux developers will approach this bug since they don't enforce syscalls to be done from glibc.

I wonder how this is related to the so called "mediterranian diet"? I mean, the advantages for the mediterranian diet could perhaps at least in part be attributed to the times at which people eat rather than the exact food they eat?

My experience with Spain et al is that they are hot during the day and locals tend to eat a lot late at night and very little during the day.

Flow··on Adults with ADHD show decreased function in brain dopamine reward pathway (2010)
I was prescribed bupropion to stave off lack of energy and possibly heighten my mood. To my surprise it made me so sleepy I had to take it before bed.

For most other people it seems like they can hardly sleep while on bupropion.

I was told via forums that I might have ADD/ADHD because of this reaction.

What does HN think of this reaction?

Flow··on Firefox usage is down despite Mozilla's top exec pay going up
I really like Firefox and Rust. It feels like Mozilla's most important products and I feel, and could be wrong, that when they recently laid off skilled tech people they fired the wrong people. Don't fire the doers!

I'm guessing there are a lot of initiatives with a heavy "SJW" direction that was spared. Most of those are probably not very technical.

I think Mozilla should focus on getting Firefox written in Rust. This will likely make Firefox a safer browser and make it easier to work on. A safer browser is good for privacy which is partly a non-tech thing they should focus on too. Personal privacy and safety.

Donating to Mozilla feels completely pointless when there are people at the top leeching off money without having none of the qualities of a charismatic leader.
