Flow··on Secret colours of the Commodore 64 (2017)
> ON the MSX you could create your own palette..

On MSX2 you mean? I don't think it's possible to alter the palette on MSX1.

I've not read much about the new law/requirements, but will these points apply to Xboxes and Playstations as well?
Flow··on The Thousand Brains Theory of Intelligence (2019)
The transfer times, the internal reaction/processing times and the hierarchical structure likely makes this different and more chaotic compared to a big neural net, which is more like a function.

> And it was then that I realized that consciousness was probably a fairly large collective, like a jellyfish, rather than a single thread.

Given that it's chemical and electrical signals, probably in some semi-hierarchical pattern, isn't that how it "must" be?

Flow··on Under anesthesia, where do our minds go?
I read a thread at Reddit about people that have been in a coma. Most of the people said they had no idea of the time passed. No dreams, no nothing.

Other people said they dream like during the night, but had less awareness of time. So not like when I sleep and sometimes feel that this dream is stupid/frustrating/repetitive and either I should wake up now or the dream should change.

Flow··on Bosch eBike Systems presents its new eBike ABS
I have a Crescent Elder and without assistance on max it feels like I cycle on wet sand with flat tires. I think I'll get an Ecoride next time. Old ladies wosh past me uphill and they put zero effort into pedaling while I have to use a slightly lower gear and pedal faster.
Flow··on The end of the nice GTK button
I really miss a consistent user experience. A core idea that I as a user can rely on to predict how a new app will work. I was in awe when I discovered as a kid that user interface were a research area. Things like Fitt's Law and so on. It was not just opinion.

Today I get the feeling it's mostly just opinion. Either the designer's opinion or the wish to copy the look of something.

Whenever I see a hamburger menu I silently think "Here someone has given up".

And there are a lot of behaviors that are not functioning well.

Is something a button? Should I click it or double-click it? How about long-press on it? How can I know when there's no visual clues?

Things like "Hide cursor while typing" in Windows. It has not worked properly for decades and today only work in some super old apps like Notepad.

Another thing is type-ahead. I remember in classic MacOS, people pressed shortcuts and started to type the filename or whatever. It was all perfectly recorded and replayed. In modern Windows, press Win-key and start to type, oops, it missed the first keypresses, presented the completely wrong results and made a mess of your workflow.

I feel confused and disrespected as a user every day and I've been using WIMP graphical user interfaces since 1986. Sure, computers do more today, but there's less consideration of almost everything.

Flow··on Poll: Why are people leaving their jobs?
For more than a year I've been trying to get it clear to my boss that I'm too stressed and need a less chaotic workplace. The last months I've had constant headache and fuzzy vision. I checked my blood pressure and it was 180/95. Ten months earlier when I last checked it it was 130/83. On medication now, but my heart beats so hard sometimes I think I need more medication.

When I told my boss about this, he said the usual friendly words about I need to do what I must and that he was relieved the problem was found. I nearly exploded when I read that and told him that high blood pressure is the symptom, the cause is my workplace. Got no good answer to that. I spoke to someone more senior than me and it seems hopeless to resolve this without leaving, so that's what I'm going to do. Leave, and start my own company.

I can't work for someone who lacks empathy and is dangerous to my life.

Flow··on Call of Duty Adds Kernel Level Driver for Anti-Cheat
> If it has 99% accuracy, then you're banning thousands of players

Obviously you can't just automatically permaban people if the system is not based on a technical inspection of the player's system. Instead you have to bar them from playing for a few days or so.

Even VAC reverses bans sometimes.

If you are looking for a perfect solution there will never be one.

> do not games send "too much" in order to play around networking constrains?

Maybe the newest games does that. CSGO and other popular games send complete positions and what-not to every player.

Flow··on Call of Duty Adds Kernel Level Driver for Anti-Cheat
Client-side anti-cheat is a futile endeavor these days and besides being ineffective probably is user-hostile too. Server-side machine learning is the way to go.

Also the server should not send info a legitimate client have no use of.

Flow··on The 100 MHz 6502
I thought that the faster 6502-clone should have its own 64kb RAM and only let writes end up on original RAM. So only writes should be slowed down to the original 6510 free slot.

All reads could be from fast RAM.

Then we have hardware registers and external DMA, those have to be handled specially.

Flow··on A Compiler for Standard ML in Rust
We used MoscowML and later SML/NJ at the University and I have fond memories of SML. I find SML very beautiful, more so than OCaml and Haskell.
Flow··on Rust programs written entirely in Rust
You learn over time to encapsulate and insulate to avoid other's crap code to infect your code-poems.

Less jokingly, programming has so many pain points that you learn to avoid. Simple things like reformatting a file, while a simple thing and seemingly necessary, can later end up being transformed into some of the less enjoyable mergings you have done.

Like a binary butterfly effect.

IMHO: Rust is going to be very very popular on everything from embedded to client-side web apps.

Headlines like the one on this submission makes me think "finally, someone has started to write that thing in a sensible language".

Flow··on Steam survey shows Linux marketshare hitting 1.0%
The bots that plague TF2 runs on Linux. No VAC on Linux either so I suppose when they get VACd it’s a manual thing from Valve’s side.
Flow··on MS Windows Defender and DeCSS
Our company just switched from Symantec to Windows Defender and so far I'm very pleased. On my Windows laptop the fans were running more or less all the time when we had Symantec. With Defender the computer is nearly dead silent.

When looking in Task Manager before, it seemed that Symantec used more CPU than even Visual Studio and related processes.

Flow··on Leaving Google
Swede here. I have a fairly standard Swedish industry vacation. 5 weeks plus ~1.5 week of hours I can take part of days. In addition to that there are also other holidays which I'm not working and doesn't count towards my vacation days.

I usually take 4 weeks in July. Then vacation/time off just before Christmas until a week after New Year.

I have friends who instead of increased salary have asked for more vacation weeks, and have now 7 weeks of vacation. And they use it every year.

Flow··on Leaving Google
I live in Sweden, the west coast. A friend is from the UK and he described my town as a paradise compared to London.

The ocean is like 10-30 minutes away. The coast line is incredible and free for all to enjoy.

He describes his work in London as strict dress code. 1+h sweaty and crowdy train+metro rides(and the same to get home). Long work days.

Dressing is casual. Work is probably <30 mins by car(I have 15 mins single-way, car and bike take similar times). I even have coworkers who jog to work a few times a week. Showers and sauna are available at work. Work hours are flexible.

He said good food is cheap here. There are excellent restaurants that cost much less than similar ones in London.

Since mid-March, I've been taking 2-3h lunches on the cliffs by the ocean if it's a sunny day. Just laying there listening to the nature. Takes 20 minutes door to ocean for me.

For me this is a high quality of life. How can you put a price on things like this, especially when you(stereotypical US IT worker) have little to no paid vacation, work 8-12h a day, sometimes even on the weekends?

Flow··on Leaving Google
I would prefer a sauna to a swimming pool any day. :)
Flow··on Reddit’s disrespectful design

You almost make it sound like this is something the users like and want.

As a long time Reddit user I can say that if they force the new site on to me along with their mobile app, I'm gone. It's not worth it.

Flow··on The ongoing witch-hunt for sex workers in Sweden

Flow··on The ongoing witch-hunt for sex workers in Sweden
In Sweden there are plenty of "yoni dearmouring" and similar sevices. I get that more women have a harder time orgasming than men usually have. Also more trauma amongst women than men.

But if you are a man with these kinds of problems you have nowhere to go.
