Fliko··on Please review my startup. Safe text messaging for teachers
It is simply another tool to help increase communication between teachers and students, I can't dream up of a situation where phones would be required to be used in a classroom.

With that in mind it might be worth it to enable a feature that will allow teachers to also send an email to students who desire it, as to allow students who don't have phones to be included as they can access the internet at school (if they don't have the internet or a computer at home).

Fliko··on TakeThisLollipop - really clever/creepy use of the Facebook API
I didn't allow them and it still worked for me.
Fliko··on The Missed Red Flags on Groupon
Hindsight bias is probably the most important 2 words here.
Fliko··on OpenClassroom: Free video courses from Stanford University
Every release of new free classes from Stanford or MIT just makes me giddy and jealous of everyone that goes there. A lot of extra work goes into these classes and I think it says tons about the awesome ideals that these institution holds, which is very different from the ideals that the education system I have been fighting for over half a year holds.
Fliko··on Siri: Apple's trojan horse
I didn't even realize I was doing it until you mentioned it.
Fliko··on The 10 Mistakes I've made...so you don't have to
I think knowing when to quit is like predicting the stock market. Many extremely successful companies were in positions where they should've quit but didn't, and then ended up successful because they managed to pivot correctly (either by pure luck or good observations).

Means you shouldn't worry if you messed up if you didn't 'quit at the right time', but you should be more concerned if you acted rationally and took an objective view on everything, and most importantly took the time to judge how your company/startup is doing and how you can improve it.

Fliko··on Facebook for iPad
The point is that people value their privacy, and many tech companies don't.
Fliko··on Deep C
I think there is a point of expected knowledge though, as somethings really won't matter in the long run. It's been a long long time since I've touched C, but if I remember right a big issue with int main() & int main(void) is that if you don't have the void to tell the compiler that main takes no argument then you can cause lots of micro-controllers running your code to crash. This fact makes the void knowledge more important for micro-controller programmers then it does for Windows programmers (although it's very simple knowledge that a lot of people state).
Fliko··on Ask HN: Can a No Budget Indie Movie Make $1m Online?
I don't think it will be as successful as you think, and my reasoning for that is that it really doesn't have much to do with the movie. Don't get me wrong, it's a cool idea and you should do it for the novelty if you want, but if you really want to increase sales you should do something relevant to the product you are selling.

It's probably too late for doing anything with this, but if you do more movies you should consider doing an ARG (like ilovebees, the beast etc.), and I think this would be effective because you are hitting an online audience by releasing a movie that you download. Unless you are pro at creating ARGs, or unless you really put time into it and have a bit of luck it probably won't introduce commercial success, but it would definitely open your film up to a small niche.

Another interesting thing is pricing models, and I think that it won't increase sales, but if some people want to pay more money for extra stuff, they will do so and it will help increase revenue. A good example is at http://joshfreese.com/ (I promise I'm not affiliated, just a favourite musician of mine who had success with this model)

Fliko··on Finding Love Optimally
I am going to be late for my class because of you, it was totally worth it though. If you ever need a novel to read, go read VALIS by Phillip K. Dick, your theory of schumann resonance reminded me of that novel.
Fliko··on Eliminate the FDA, Insurance Companies, Medical Education Before They Kill You
Yeah, the FDA, insurance companies, and entirety of health care isn't great, and yeah med school really sucks for the people to go there but you can't just throw that shit out there are very good reasons that these ideas were put into place and those ideas have just become diluted with greed.

The systems need reworking not removal.

Fliko··on Ask HN: Courage to build stuff
Just stop thinking and start building something, and don't stop building that something until it's usable.
Fliko··on Practicing 2000 hrs (The Dan Plan: a 10,000 hr deliberate practice experiment)
From my understanding the level that you supposedly reach at 10,000 hours is virtuoso.
Fliko··on Ten principles for a Black Swan-proof world
Wouldn't that have killed the US economy?
Fliko··on Ask HN: What interests tech people when talking to a non-tech person?
For #4 I think he is saying that your end product may be different then what you envisioned it as, and as such you must be willing to let go of certain things and to adapt to what is needed. Of course with that said you also have to understand that not all changes are for the greater good, and it's a powerful ability to realize which is which with context.
Fliko··on If you don’t have pet projects, I don’t think I want you
I do think that people can have a real passion for programming, have a life, and be able to work in a professional environment. They probably already have a job, or will get one very soon. All the points you listed are totally valid though, and I totally agree with your last point.
Fliko··on If you don’t have pet projects, I don’t think I want you
I find it extremely hard to believe that you have 6-8 hours of sleep a night.
Fliko··on If you don’t have pet projects, I don’t think I want you
That is a terrible argument as downtime is essential for humans to stay productive.

Of course people are going to watch some TV with their families, or play an hour of games to unwind a little, or go watch some sports game with their buddies, or spend god knows how many hours practicing their musical instruments. This is what keeps people sane, productive, balanced, and happy.

Having other hobbies after work is generally a good sign that the person is mature, and has good perspective on life.

Fliko··on Diamond planets, climate change and the scientific method
Thank you for being rational rather then being distorted to one view or the other.

They've already dealt with similar problems and haven't put any accounts into bad standing. The good standing/bad standing is more for VAC anyways.
Fliko··on The mathematics generation gap
I've been in a few math courses that have not required a graphing calculator, we were required to memorize basic functions to help us solve problems more quickly, and to understand more of the intuition behind the math, and what the graph is actually telling us.
Fliko··on The mathematics generation gap
It's just another skill, it can help and make certain things go much faster if you are good at mental math, but in the end the only thing that matters is your understanding of the operations you are doing in either your head, or your calculator.

I am unsure how the traditional Calculus course is, but I took a slightly altered one at a technical institute, and we spent quite a bit of time learning the methods computers use to calculate integrals. I think it is safe to say that as long as I understand these methods and remember them, I am at no disability to use a computer, rather then solving integrals on paper.
