Fizzadar··on DigitalOcean lost our server
I have to disagree - DO's "cloud servers" are equivalent to virtual private servers, which you would never expect to loose in this manner from other providers.

The lack of explanation is what worries me most - it leads me to think this might have been a case of "we forgot to replace a bad drive, then the second in the pair failed".

Fizzadar··on Ask HN: Do you use an old or 'unfashionable' programming language?
Bash. I'm obsessed - so much so that I'll solve more complex problems taking 3x time rather than falling back to Python. And then there's bash one-liners, they're the best!
Fizzadar··on TSA Body Scan? Just Say 'No,' Leading Expert Says
Every time, which my family always find hilarious and inconvenient. Radiation isn't an issue, as the above comment said it's very much a "fuck the TSA" stance.
Fizzadar··on Ask HN: What are your predictions in technology for 2016?
I've been waiting for browsers to implement this for years, would love the opportunity to drop JS for Lua!
Fizzadar··on Devils, Deals and the DEA: the DEA's longest running drug cartel case
Really interesting article - highlights how the DEA were/are twisted into helping whichever cartel they're not targeting. Another pointless, expensive and violent fail in the war against drugs.
Fizzadar··on Leaving the Mac App Store
So the direct version instantly crashes on 10.11.2 beta, the app store version continues to run perfectly. Oh, the irony.
Fizzadar··on Otto: Meet the Successor to Vagrant
"Otto detects your application type and builds a development environment tailored specifically for that application, with zero or minimal configuration." - that alone tells me to avoid this like the plague. Too much "magic".
Fizzadar··on The world's most multilingual cities
Cached link for anyone in the UK (FFS BBC): https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:zd6VUP...
Fizzadar··on ARIN Finally Runs Out of IPv4 Addresses
Not bad that! Here (UK) we have yet to see a major ISP embrace IPv6 properly.
Fizzadar··on ARIN Finally Runs Out of IPv4 Addresses
While it's sad that there are so many large and unused blocks (Apple, DoD, etc), whats worse is the disgraceful adoption of IPv6 by ISP's.
Fizzadar··on Why Elephants Don’t Explode: How Nature Solves Bigness
Really enjoyed this - interesting read with awesome illustrations and interactivity. Also love the Noticing.co name (bookmarked).
Fizzadar··on Selling England by the offshore pound
This explains why (my) rent is so high - and why the first time buyer is a thing of the past in London.
Fizzadar··on Receiving Weather Satellite Images With An £8 Dongle
This is awesome; am ordering a dongle right away!

Did some digging and there's a whole load of things which can potentially be picked up, including dead satellites [0]. RTL-SDR.com has a whole load of awesome looking tutorials [1].

Fizzadar··on Show HN: DiscoBit – Central Configuration Repository
"Distribution on demand ... Configurations are not pushed to the environments but fetched by them". To me this means this is not a distributed configuration system, but a centralised one distributed clients read from. I quickly scanned the docs and couldn't see anything about distributed deployments...

That said, the admin interface and the collaboration features sound awesome, I shall give this a spin when I get the chance :)

Also, couple of website-y thoughts: the home/logo link doesn't work on any page except the index. And please less of the font - the about text on the homepage is hard to read!

Fizzadar··on Show HN: DiscoBit – Central Configuration Repository
From what I understand this isn't distributed, but clients pull from it? Docs don't mention anything about multi-server deployments...
Fizzadar··on Zynga, Where the Numbers Never Lie
Fascinating account on the rise and subsequent collapse of Zynga. Given what was said, and as the author pointed out, why the hell is Pincus back and Don out? Some very strange goings on over there...

edit: it's nice to see them outputting something a little more interesting than Farmville :)

Fizzadar··on Pinterest Raises $367M at $11B valuation
Does anyone else think 11B is insane? Higher valued than Dropbox and Airbnb? They must have pitched hell of a monetisation plan.
Fizzadar··on Tracking Device Teardown
As well as the teardown, the disclaimer is pretty interesting too:

> We love the FBI. We've worked with them on several occasions to fight crime and locate criminals. We've helped them with instructions on gaining entry into certain devices. We have nothing against them, and we hope they don't come after us for publishing this teardown.

Fizzadar··on Tracking Device Teardown
It's history (https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/history/5250?page=3) shows the first edit to be on April 13, 2011 @ 3:31 PM.
Fizzadar··on Three out of four Ferguson residents have arrest warrants
Unbelievable, absolutely disgraceful, I have no words. The entire justice system of Ferguson should be closed down with immediate effect, as it appears corrupt & racist from the police on the street through to the courts.
Fizzadar··on Making Finfisher Malware Undetectable
Kind of scary, but would need successful execution to be really bad. I really like the idea of sandbox analysis, as well as the challenge of writing a program which can detect when running in-sandbox :)
Fizzadar··on Ask HN: Since CitizenFour, have you changed the way you conduct yourself online?
>> Sigh. I don't think any of this matters much anyway.

This is exactly how I feel. I've reached the point where I assume the majority of my online communication is "public" - and use alternatives only when necessary to achieve (as close as possible) to true privacy.

Fizzadar··on A Dangerous and Costly Photo in Japan
After reading the article I spent the last half hour looking deeper into the Yakuza. It's quite amazing just how integrated they are into Japanese society, that they have a strong, highly respected morale code and the way they are semi-legal entities that the government/police (mostly) ignore.
Fizzadar··on Google got it wrong. The open-office trend is destroying the workplace
I work in an open office and it's certainly got a fair share of ups & downs. It makes for a more sociable office resulting in a stronger 'team' feel. However, the music/noise/chatter force me to wear headphones (and crank them up). Even with the 'phones, I'm definitely more effective working from home (even the team agrees).

I'd like to see companies implementing mixed layouts, perhaps where teams work together in open offices, but not the entire company/multiple teams. Or - as per the article - a mix between working in-open-office and from home.

Fizzadar··on Merry Christmas to HN
Merry Christmas HNer's :)
Fizzadar··on Git's initial commit
Great to see the original command set, and the title of course: "GIT - the stupid content tracker"
Fizzadar··on FFS SSL
This post speaks hits the spot - a perfect rundown of the (broken) SSL experience. Why do we still live in an age where security & identity are so tightly bound that to "secure" a site, you have to pay someone to "validate" your authenticity - which we all know, is bollocks anyway.
Fizzadar··on Ask HN: How do I write good documentation?
This, self-taught as well starting with PHP and their docs (with examples and user-added examples) are the best I've seen.

I've also noticed a lot more packages (npm mostly) with synopsis sections which essentially forms a 'full example', I find these immensely helpful.

Fizzadar··on Why Far-Flung Parts of the Internet Broke Today
VolumeDrive - what a surprise. They're a disgrace in the hosting world and I strongly advise anyone against using their services (they don't pay their bills for DC space, equipment, etc, http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1296858).
Fizzadar··on BashBooster – simple provisioning, bash only, requires nothing
I've thought about doing similar things in the past (I like the idea of deploying with bash/extended-bash) - great to see this!
