Fishkins··on GitHub Raises $250M at $2B Valuation
My employer also recently switched from Hipchat to Slack, and I'd say Slack is vastly superior.

Most important for me are the notifications. Slack lets you set per-channel notification settings. With Hipchat I'd either miss messages I wanted to see or have to get constant notifications. "More granular notifications" was either the #1 or #2 highest-voted issue in their feature requests for over three years, and they're only now getting to the point where they have a beta version of the feature.

Also, if I received messages while I had Hipchat closed and opened it back up later, there'd be no indication I had received a message[0]. With Slack, I can always quickly catch up on messages I missed in channels I care about.

It's possible to edit posts in Slack, which isn't as essential, but still very useful.

Hipchat would initiate laggy emoticon autocomplete after I typed an opening paren, which I found very obnoxious. My goal was almost always to add a parenthetical statement, not an emoticon. There didn't seem to be a way to turn the autocomplete off.

Hipchat uad miscellaneous minor bugs that I've never experienced with Slack.

The only real thing I see in Hipchat's favor is the integrated video/voice chat, but there are plenty of other ways for me to do that when I need to. Plus, hopefully Slack will have Screenhero integrated soon.

[0] If I was @tagged I'd receive an email, but the app itself still wouldn't give me any indication of unread messages.

Fishkins··on The Supreme Court's Crucial Mistake About Sex Crime Statistics
I definitely think that's a big part of it. A lot of the people involved in these discussions probably have been sexually assaulted, but relatively few have had their lives affected by genocide (or even murder).

Puritanism probably plays a role, too. Even consensual sex is often considered an inappropriate topic, so it wouldn't be surprising if that applied doubly to rape.

Fishkins··on The Greatest Good: What is the best charitable cause in the world?
I agree she would she would retain some fragments of that, but she still could be substantially changed. See vacri's sibling (cousin?) post for an anecdote.

> Interestingly, Buffet did not call for a raising of the capital gains tax -- the form of income from which Buffet derives his wealth.

Um, why do you say that? Every statement I've seen from him very clearly says taxes on capital gains need to increase (at least for those earning large capital gains).

"Pizza" is just Italian for "pie".

Fishkins··on React Native: Initial Thoughts
"force" is certainly an overstatement, but it does add friction to creating small components.

> Mutually assured destruction

Wouldn't that apply to Google as well?

Fishkins··on React Native is now open source
Yahoo and Netflix are using React, right? Do you (or anyone) know why they consider the license acceptable, but Google wouldn't?

Fishkins··on Lain, the Whom of the Verb World
I wonder how much this was influenced by the common bedtime prayer[0]. "Lay" is the right conjugation with the reflexive pronoun added ("I lay [myself] down"), and people probably don't consider that "I lie down" needs to be conjugated differently.

Fishkins··on Postico – A modern PostgreSQL client for OS X
I also abandoned pgAdmin because of flaky connection handling, as well as several annoying bugs on the Mac version. I was happy with psql for a while (and still sometimes use it), but IntelliJ's DB plugin is by far my favorite now. Its autocomplete is really smart, which makes a big difference in writing queries without having to constantly check various table definitions.
Fishkins··on Speaking While Female
There have been many similar studies performed that showed materials with female names are ranked lower than those with male names[0]. Same thing with black vs white-sounding names[1].

Fishkins··on Java Doesn’t Suck
> Of course, a Java programmer takes it for granted that you restart things every time you change code. But that sucks.

Did you not read to the section about jRebel/Play and not needing to restart?

But I do agree with you that server startup time isn't as big a deal if you don't have to restart after each change.

Fishkins··on Ten seconds of math
In Chrome I think you can only do this with an extension. I use BackStop.
Fishkins··on React v0.12
I haven't used React, but maybe he's referring to this: "Composite Component functions can no longer be called directly - they must be wrapped with React.createFactory first. This is handled for you when using JSX."

I'm all for considering externalities, your examples are terrible, especially Trayvon. It's arguable whether he did anything wrong, and it's also quite possible he wasn't high at the time[0]. Even if he was high and was aggressive once Zimmerman started following him, there are more important factors in the disturbance than how Trayvon acted.

Fishkins··on To Make Streets Safe, Make Them Dangerous
I haven't seen anyone get hit, but all forms of traffic in NYC (especially midtown Manhattan) are very aggressive.

Pedestrians do regularly walk out in front of traffic against the light. Cars, especially taxis, will speed up to run yellow/red lights, even when there are crowds of pedestrians at the corner spilling onto the streets. Bikes often run lights and ride against traffic. Cars and pedestrians block bike lanes constantly.

It's remarkable so few accidents happen, really. I think part of it is, although NYC drivers can be annoying and aggressive, they are also skilled and attentive.

Fishkins··on Leading Anti-Marijuana Academics Are Paid by Painkiller Drug Companies
Just one anecdote, but I felt surprisingly clear-headed when I took oxycodone. Aside from feeling more relaxed and optimistic than normal, I didn't feel any of the fuzziness I feel when drunk. Maybe an external observer would have disagreed; I wasn't really interacting with people or attempting any mentally-taxing exercises.

There are lots of other downside to opioids, of course, such as dizziness during physical activity and addiction.

Fishkins··on Balancing Bike-Share Stations Has Become a Scientific Endeavor
Exactly. If this were implemented, it would affect me one of two ways*

1) The cost variation would be small enough that I'd ignore it.

2) The cost would sometimes be high enough to dissuade me from taking a bike where I wanted to go, in which case I would quit the program completely. I don't want to have to change my travel plans at the last minute. Even if the extra cost were non-trivial but acceptable, the mental overhead of having to decide whether it's worth it would make the program much less appealing.

* If I were actually participating in a bike share program. Currently I own my own bike, but I could see using a bike share program in the future.

Fishkins··on Why Crunch Mode Doesn't Work (2005)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the research actually only shows the peak is no higher than 40 hours per week. Are there studies indicating people are more productive working 40-hour weeks than 30 or 35-hour weeks?

Of course your point still stands, they'd just have to be even more of an outlier.

Fishkins··on Hard Science About Diet
I'm not saying it's useful to call sugar a poison, and I don't generally refer to it as one. I'm saying it fits the definitions I've seen of poison, and that makes it literally a poison.

> Besides, sugar is the primary fuel for your brain; without sugar, we don't exist. It's a funny sort of poison that is necessary for our existence.

Arsenic, along with several other low-dose poisons, is also necessary for our existence[0]. Do you disagree it's a poison?

Fishkins··on Hard Science About Diet
Of course sugar is literally a poison. So is water. I think what you mean is in practice it doesn't really matter.
Fishkins··on Where I Should Live, According to Math
Although the page is great overall, I was also skeptical of the diversity scores. I looked at some of the cities I've lived in, and noticed that Madison, WI and NYC both score 3. That can't be right.
Fishkins··on How “Legal” Are Seed Libraries?
> In fact, if seeds from your neighbor's field are blown over by the wind to your field, and you harvest those, you can be sued for patent infringement

I don't like Monsanto, but nothing I've read indicates this alone is sufficient to lose a lawsuit. In the case I assume you're referring to, the farmer didn't lose because harvested a few plants that had blown into his field. He lost because he then killed off his non-resistant plants with Roundup, intentionally collected the seeds from the remaining Monsanto plants, and replanted his entire field with them the next year.

Fishkins··on What ORMs have taught me: just learn SQL
Thanks for sharing your experience. I've been meaning to try Slick, and YeSQL sounds like a nice way to reduce some boilerplate with no real downside. I go back and forth about how I feel about ORMs. I think everyone can agree you'll need to learn SQL for any non-trivial project, even if you end up using some abstraction on top of it.

On a tangent: you mentioned Upserts in Postgres features. I thought Postgres didn't have any kind of Upsert. Was it added recently or something?

Fishkins··on Gentrification May Actually Be Boon To Longtime Residents
I believe it's relatively common to gamble on dominoes, and gambling is often illegal. Even so, it's an innocuous crime and probably not the real reason they were hassled.
Fishkins··on How U.S. Cities’ Public Transit Stacks up
In general, I do wish more people would explicitly say whether they're listing city population or metro population. In this case the numbers are all clearly metro area. It would be interesting to see how the rankings differed for just the cities. I imagine they'd be very similar, but a few cities would move around.
