FilthyAnalyst··on What is this advanced fee scam for sysadmin jobs?
They'll still have a problem with the bank as the check will eventually be reversed. With the know your customer laws banks are getting pretty cautious dealing with people who deposit checks that are associated with money laundering scams. My mother has an aide who has fallen for a couple similar scams and is now unable to open a bank account with the major retail banks.
FilthyAnalyst··on What is this advanced fee scam for sysadmin jobs?
They will need to send them money back or purchase something to send to the scammer. Could be a computer that needs to be configured at corporate or something purchased from them posing as a vendor. A common thing is they send an overpayment and request money be sent back immediately. It can be considered participating in money laundering and I know of 'victims' who are unable to open bank accounts. And of course the original funds will turn out to be bad.

FilthyAnalyst··on Ask HN: How would one get a list of all veterinarians in the US?
You can lookup SIC codes (Standard Industrial Classification)for different industries from the link and purchase lists of the ones you need. One service is here but there are many. https://siccode.com/search-sic/veterinary
FilthyAnalyst··on Ask HN: Locked out of Amazon accounts for a month
Could the first password change request have been malicious? The subsequent resets may not work because the email has been changed. Check your credit cards they have on file to make sure you're not getting massive AWS charges.

FilthyAnalyst··on Tell HN: Namecheap is stealing domains with keywords
This type of activity has been happening since the 90s and it's not limited to namecheap. You need to purchase a domain if you check its availability.
FilthyAnalyst··on Supermicro spy chips, the sequel: It happened, insists Bloomberg
If they existed we would see the chips by now. They sell over $3 billion in hardware a year. I'm sure by now hundreds of individuals and companies have tried to find one and be the first with the teardown.
FilthyAnalyst··on Unintentional Covid-19 Vaccine Test Case
Britain is allowing it if the correct one isn't available or known. The vaccines both target the spike protein and it's probably fine but there is very little data. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/01/health/coronavirus-vaccin...
FilthyAnalyst··on Is It Too Late to Stop Climate Change? [video]
No.
FilthyAnalyst··on Really Atari ST?
Stacker was pretty common in the early 90s.
FilthyAnalyst··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Seveneves. By Neal Stevenson. Lots of great ideas. A bit slow at times.
FilthyAnalyst··on Long Life Vehicle
One major cost with Tesla is the insurance. I was quoted $380 a month on a model 3. I pay ~$700 for 6 months on 3 cars, 2 of them are 20 year old beaters and one is a new mini convertible.
FilthyAnalyst··on Ask HN: What are some great books that are relatively unknown in the US?
The Man Without Qualities by Robert Musil. Set in pre WWI Vienna. It’s a three volume unfinished novel full of brilliant writing, much of which should appeal to the crowd here.
FilthyAnalyst··on Ask HN: Where are you?
Tucson, AZ
FilthyAnalyst··on Ask HN: I have 1k to invest, what would you recommend?
If you want to be safe buy 4 $SPY you'll have to go a little over a grand as they are at $265. Historically very few assets beat it over a given 25 year period. For some fun buy Litecoin or 10 NVDA Jan 12 2018 217.5 calls.
FilthyAnalyst··on How the Elderly Lose Their Rights
If I am 79 years old and have had everything taken from me by a monster I might be spending the rest of my life in a different kind of facility than the culprit had in mind.
FilthyAnalyst··on Ask HN: What happens to society when we have pocket AI lie detectors
There was an interesting book about 20 years ago on the creation of a perfect lie detector, The Truth Machine by James L. Halperin. It primarily dealt with the screening that would take place throughout your daily activities suck as signing up for day care or a new job when the detector would force everyone to confess any previous crimes.

FilthyAnalyst··on Ask HN: Do you become emotionally attached to your old tech?

FilthyAnalyst··on How can I start TensorFlow on Amd Graphics card?
