Fezzik··on Crypto Doesn't Deserve a Tax Exemption
Which courts hear disputes regarding crytpo currencies? Which law enforcement officers investigate crimes related to crypto currencies? Which grids power mining? You live in a very dark bubble if you think crypto currencies are somehow operating outside of all the benefits of a society.
Fezzik··on Ten Concerts You Must See If You Are a Time Traveler
My mom saw Hendrix and the Beatles in Seattle… she said both shows were awful because you couldn’t hear a thing due to subpar sound systems and, in the case of the Beatles, screaming young women. For the type of music they were playing the venues just didn’t have the tech yet to accommodate their respective sounds and crowds.
Fezzik··on California bans legacy admissions at private universities
High Net Worth. Ultra High Net Worth.
Fezzik··on [dead]
This is so easy to test yourself - just get a calorie tracker. They’re dead simple to use these days and they also track macronutrients so you can see what works best for you. I have never been using a calorie tracker, eating at a calorie deficit, and not lost weight. And it didn’t matter in any noticeable way if I was having ice cream and beer for dinner or steak and eggs. Sure, there are loads if variables, but absent some medical condition I challenge anyone to eat at a calorie deficit and not drop weight.
Fezzik··on Human drivers keep rear-ending Waymos
As a tangent: if you have not ridden in a Waymo you owe it to yourself to take a ride. I was in LA last weekend and took a 60 minute ride from my cousin’s house to a concert and, after flying, or maybe even before, it is the most futuristic thing I have ever experienced. And it feels far safer than any human driver I have been in a car with, including myself.

Fezzik··on John Mayall has died
Such a great album. Every time I scroll by it — right after John Hiat and right before John Mayer on the playlist — I give it a listen. This is an album my uncles told me to listen to after I started listening to Led Zeppelin so that I could start to learn the history of Rock & Roll.
Fezzik··on Apple Users Are Keeping Their Devices for Longer as Upgrades Slow
Core Duos received software updates until October 2014… what was abandoned in 3 years?
Fezzik··on Is anyone interested in a better Hacker News?
Yea, no. HN is the pinnacle of UI as far as I am concerned. It is as simple as is necessary but not lacking in features. And the filtering/ranking of articles is top-notch. The only thing I miss, content wise, is political posts, because I enjoyed the discussions around here. I dislike that (almost) all politics-centric articles are effectively assigned to oblivion immediately.

All that’s needed is a VPN and a torrent client. Membership is open to all. If you are on a Mac I recommend BiglyBT.
Fezzik··on Paramount Erases Mtv.com Archives, Wipes Music, Culture History After 30+ Years
There’s a group of renegades doing their best to shore-up the shortcomings of current media retention and make sure such booty remains existent. You should join the crew!
Fezzik··on Astronomers see a black hole awaken in real time
Extending the tangent: The Fountain is a criminally underrated movie!
Fezzik··on 72% of U.S. high school teachers say cellphone distraction is a major problem
The big problem is smartphones with internet access, not cellphones. I was in high-school when cellphones really took off and while the occasional errant phone ring in class wasn’t uncommon nobody was compelled to be doom scrolling on social media during class, because we didn’t have internet access. A lot of people, especially kids, are not skilled at moderating bad habits.

On a related tangent, my drive to work takes me past multiple middle-school bus-stops and every. single. kid. Has their face glued to their phone every. single. day. It’s depressing.

Fezzik··on Deterioration of local community a major driver of loss of play-based childhood
This is one reason I am grateful for having grown up in an apartment complex - I had ready access to loads of kids around my age, a field for baseball and football games, a cement area for wall-ball and four-square, and secret places to just be alone and enjoy the outdoors. From my first conscious memories to when I moved out after high-school I could walk out my front-door at any reasonable hour and I would bump into someone I knew to goof-off with. In a sincerely-not-at-all-condescending way I feel bad for kids that don’t have that. Without that experience I don’t know how I would be (at least in my opinion) the generally well-rounded person that I am.
Fezzik··on Don't be terrified of Pale Fire
I love seeing anything Nabokov related pop-up here; all of his books are lessons in how powerful fictional characters can be when crafted well. Read all of his books as soon as you can!
Fezzik··on Napster sparked a file-sharing revolution 25 years ago
For a great example of fan edits, compare Harmey’s Despecialized Editions of Episodes 4, 5, and 6 to the butchered final copies that George tried to make be the only available versions; the Despecialized versions are astonishingly superior in content and audio/video quality.

Fezzik··on In Praise of Idleness (1932)
I am thrilled to cross-paths with another TTNG fan online; I know a grand total of 1 fan outside of the internet. They are criminally underrated and I am praying that despite their years-long-silence we’ll get some new material and another tour in the near future.
Fezzik··on In Praise of Idleness (1932)
One of my favorite bands, TTNG, has a wicked good song inspired by this essay. If you like math-rock at all I reckon you’d enjoy it: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dCKXg2scb_s&pp=ygUaaW4gcHJhaXN...
Fezzik··on Long Reviled as 'Ugly,' Sea Lampreys Get Some Respect (2023)
I experienced this 30 years ago and it still haunts me. In a fascinating way. Such cool creatures.
Fezzik··on Trump Media plunges more than 25% after company reports net loss of $58 million
The loss was expected, and I think was noted as expected in the IPO filing; it lost a similar amount in 2022.

Edit: clarity.

Fezzik··on A star system 3,000 light-years away is predicted to become visible soon

Fezzik··on Why Hitch Still Matters: On Christopher Hitchens's "A Hitch in Time"
He has quite a few complete debates on Youtube that are equal parts informative and entertaining. I think the best is his opening statement and his arguments in the debate ‘Is the Catholic Church Truly a Force for Good?’ I’m still shocked the Catholic Church allowed their members to be so publicly flogged.

Edit, the complete opening: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cRsaxXrjk3w&pp=ygUlY2hyaXN0b3B...

Fezzik··on Wendy's will experiment with dynamic surge pricing for food in 2025
I’ve been running this experiment for 42 years. No complaints so far.
Fezzik··on AT&T applies to end obligation to service landlines in California
Don’t they have a few GPS-only units now where all the hardware is in the ankle bracelet? I work criminal-law-adjacent and I feel like I see booths for them at conventions. If so, this sounds like a great opportunity for more vendor grift… I mean government thrift.
Fezzik··on I used to not worry about climate change. Now I do [video]
I mean, you can read all the data instead of relying on newscasters for scientific information. The first IPCC report came out in 1990 and, to my understanding, accurately predicted both a rise in average temperature and the resulting increase in extreme weather events. Both of which have occurred at unprecedented rates. All of the Reports are available online. Just because you do not want to read the data doesn’t mean it is not there for you to debunk. The IPCC has made all sorts of predictions, along with confidence metrics, for almost every component of the climate and local weather. I mean this tongue in cheek, but if you know more than the hundreds of scientific authors and thousands of reviewers that have contributed to the Panel Reports you should help them out: https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg1/chapter/chapter-11/

Fezzik··on A man who collects lost pet posters
And an even better book! If you thought it was impossible for an author to write hundreds of riveting pages about kids playing Hearts (the card game) in college, you are in for a surprise!
Fezzik··on A man who collects lost pet posters
I think it depends on where you live. I live in Bend, Oregon, and lost pets are regularly found via Reddit posts. But this is a super-outdoorsy and dog friendly community, so people are outside a lot and like looking out for our furry friends.
Fezzik··on Which shows got their finale right, and which didn't?
It was a fantastic first season. But it aired a year and a half ago and there is still no release date for season two, so any hype has subsided quite a bit. Season two was reportedly filmed in April/May of last year.
Fezzik··on Researchers find signs of intelligence among jumping spiders
Even if we are predisposed to be fearful of spiders, so what? Not all spiders are the same, and jumping spiders are certainly 100% harmless to humans of all sizes. Why not work on promoting that experience and rationality override any (often mistaken) primal urges that we have?
