F_J_H··on Smart homes will turn dumb overnight as Charter kills security service
There was a good point raised about this very idea on an earlier thread, which resonated with me based on other things I've read.

Basically, small and medium sized family farms, (i.e. the hearty, resourceful folk who want to fix their own damn tractors, thank you very much (e.g. my father and grandfather)), are disappearing.[0] They are being replaced by large, corporate "factory" farms, who have little interest in doing repairs on tractors that go beyond basic maintenance. Rather than building a staff of what are becoming increasingly sophisticated (i.e. expensive) technicians, along with the necessary facilities that meet all safety regulations, etc., a simple "tractor service" is preferred.

So, the customer base of the "consumer friendly business model" may not be large enough to support such an endeavor. The times, they are a-changin'...

>>currently corporate agriculture is less sustainable as they make little to no efforts in maintaining or building the top soil depth

How did you come to this conclusion? I'm close the industry, and in my experience, corporate farms spend a great deal of effort maintaining soil, which includes using drones to visually inspect crops to see where soil may be lacking certain nutrients based on foliage color analysis.

F_J_H··on Ask HN: Which is the most successful one-person business you heard of in 2019?
Yes, they exist, but the ones I've seen are typically executive forums (ie a group of CEOs meet together). There also seem to be a lot of startup mentorship groups.

However, you might get the most mileage from finding a few people who have been successful where you would like to be, and reach out to them for mentorship. Such connections can make a huge difference.

F_J_H··on Away Fires CEO Steph Korey After Months-Long Search for Her Replacement
This is a disturbing comment to me, aside from the subtle (or not so subtle) sexism in the last line.

Inherently, racism, sexism, etc. is when we discriminate against or judge someone based on the "group" to which they belong, or worse, based on a stereotype of the group they belong to, whether that group is defined by race, sexuality, culture, or social economic class.

It would be a fair comment to say one doesn't feel sorry for Korey because her predicament was brought on by her unacceptable behavior. However, it's quite another thing to not feel sorry for her simply because of her perceived social economic class. It sounds like something you'd read in an Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn book, uttered by a proletariat after a "rich" farmer (i.e. bourgeoisie) was murdered and his farm taken.

Let's put away the pitchforks. *Edit: Missed word

F_J_H··on Simple Rules ‘Bootstrap’ the Laws of Physics
Reminds me of the Douglas Adams quote:

“This is rather as if you imagine a puddle waking up one morning and thinking, 'This is an interesting world I find myself in — an interesting hole I find myself in — fits me rather neatly, doesn't it? In fact it fits me staggeringly well, must have been made to have me in it!'"

F_J_H··on Why Child Care Is So Expensive
>children who had access to better child care become more productive citizens.

From the article:

But young Canadians who were eligible for the program experienced, as teenagers, “a significant worsening in self-reported health and in life satisfaction” relative to Canadians from other provinces. So, did the Quebec child-care experiment “work”? Yes, for parents and public financing. Perhaps not for the kids.

F_J_H··on Why Child Care Is So Expensive
"pays for itself...via increased income taxes"?

It's a "nit pick" for sure, but in my understanding, something that "pays for itself" is not dependent on government subsidies. Quebec has some of the highest income taxes in the country - you pay for such services one way or another.

Plus, according to the linked article, there is not enough space in the subsidized program to meet demand, so there are private options available, which must be paid for out of pocket and covered by a tax rebate. According the to the article, the private options do not provide the same standard of care.

F_J_H··on Dear Agile, I’m Tired of Pretending (2018)
You'd probably like Milton Friedman's ideas, and I'd be surprised if you've not already come across his work and YouTube lectures.

There is something to be said for small government, but also can go too far: actors acting in their own best interest can obviously cause harm to society or to the larger group as a whole (See "tragedy of the commons").

Related to emergence is rapid iteration, and it's importance to analysing complexity, which is caputured nicely in "Boyd's law". See https://blog.codinghorror.com/boyds-law-of-iteration/, and then see if you can find the referenced paper by Roger Sessions. (Sessions seemed to caputure the essence of "Lean Startup" before it was cool...)

F_J_H··on Dear Agile, I’m Tired of Pretending (2018)
I had not heard of "emergent architecture" until you implied you hated it, and so I thought I would Google it.

I have no idea what emergent architecture is in the agile context, but the idea of emergence is fascinating to me, and has been ever since I read "Emergence: The Connected Lives of Ants, Brains, Cities, and Software" by Steven Johnson.

We see the idea of emergent design everywhere in nature and society. I'm not suggesting everything can be built and designed "emergently", but certainly some things can be. See the book (and concept of) "the cathedral and the bazaar". The idea of something useful coming into existence without central planning is an enticing one, and so I can see the draw.

F_J_H··on Classes vs. Data Structures
And while the discussion takes place and the debate rages between classes vs. data structures, there's some poor analyst or data scientist who just needs access to the damned data to load it into a pandas data frame to do things that those designing the objects and data structures never dreamed of in the first place...
F_J_H··on Biggest Offender in Outsize Debt: Master’s Degrees
Something I've speculated on - being a student provides a person with an identity that is reasonably "high status", or certainly higher status than an entry level position one might be forced to take in absence of a finding a job in one's chosen field of study upon earning a Bachelor's degree. (Especially if it's a Master's program.) So, for some, continuing on with a master's degree is preferable, despite the questionable marginal return.

On the other hand, degree inflation is now a thing. In some fields, those you are competing with you for a job likely have master's degrees already, and you'll suffer by comparison.

yeah, search is really bad. Not sure if it's still possible, but a few years ago when trying to find something I knew I captured, I just wrote my own SQL against the local DB - found what I was looking for pretty quickly.
