F2hP18Foam··on High school student allegedly uses device to turn off nearby iPhones
>I thought medical hardware had to go through stringent approval processes with health authorities?

Yeah this is the case. You have to have a phone from a list of approved devices which is not very long.

In fairness, diabetics should be carrying standalone blood glucose monitors as a backup. You never know what could happen to your phone.

F2hP18Foam··on The Escapist staff resign following termination of editor-in-chief Nick Calandra
According to Yahtzee he doesn't own the rights to ZP, so I hope he doesn't have too much trouble starting something new.
F2hP18Foam··on The coolest robot I've ever built [video]
How it looks, basically. It's an anthropomorphized Amazon Echo.
F2hP18Foam··on "A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer" Simulated by GPT-4
Despite what the parent comment said I'd still recommend Shadow of The Torturer, the first book in the Book of The New Sun series. If you like the idea of being immersed in a world that you don't fully understand, but gives you the impression that there is a richness of lore behind every minor detail, then you'll enjoy it.
F2hP18Foam··on Turning Joe Rogan down was the right thing to do
It's so tempting to give a trite "now you're asking the real questions" type answer, but I think it is possible if you become familiar with the kinds of rhetoric debaters use and evaluate how that lines up with the known facts of an issue. It is cognitively taxing to do, and for what it's worth I'm not great at it.
F2hP18Foam··on Camera Restricta (2015)
I can imagine a version of this which uses StableDiffusion or something similar to analyze your photo and chastise you for your lack of originality. Another photo of latte art and your eggs Benedict? Not good enough, try harder. The millionth photo of the Eiffel Tower? Nope, deleted.
F2hP18Foam··on W3C announces new Web standard for online payments
On the one hand seems convenient, but on the other, I'm not a fan of tech that lowers the friction between my money and my pocket.
F2hP18Foam··on Serotonin booster leads to increased functional brain connectivity
How can someone write an article about cave paintings without including a photo of them, that's a bizarre choice.

I think these are the carvings referenced:

Seems to me like TikTok is more of a symptom than a cause, here. The behaviour he describes sounds a lot like depression.
F2hP18Foam··on Neanderthal Flute
Here's a video of the musician mentioned at the end of the article playing a reconstruction of the flute:

F2hP18Foam··on Deluge – sequencer, synthesizer and sampler – goes open source
It doesn't have the pads, but the LMN-3 is an open hardware portable groovebox based on the Teensy 4.1. I try to keep up with DIY synth projects and I haven't seen any which have velocity sensitive drum pads, but maybe I missed one.
F2hP18Foam··on New tool from curl creator – trurl – for URL parsing and manipulation
I had a feeling that ChatGPT would have trouble with some aspects of a request that specific, but here's what it gave me:

She sat with scissors, ready to snip,

Slicing strands of hair, curl by curl, clip by clip,

Shears shimmering, sharp as swords in sunlight,

Swiftly, skillfully, she shortened the sight,

Saddened by strands strewn on the floor,

She stood, serene, satisfied, the style was no more.

Clearly nowhere as good, and it couldn't get all the words to start with an 'S', even with a few attempts to correct it.

Still, some software should succeed someday, sans skipped S's. Substituting some synonyms, surely.

F2hP18Foam··on State-of-the-art open-source chatbot, Vicuna-13B, just released model weights
Seems that way, it would probably be a bad idea to use this for anything commercial at the very least.
F2hP18Foam··on Midjourney CEO Silencing Satire About Xi Jinping
In my opinion MJ v5 has better generations on average than a well-customised SD pipeline, but only by a little bit. SD definitely requires more work in terms of set-up and greater specificity in your prompt text.

I would recommend downloading one of the more aesthetically pleasing models from Huggingface or Civit.ai, such as "Deliberate", "Protogen" or "Realistic Vision".

Using 'clip interrogator' on existing images that you find appealing can be a great way to find interesting keywords to include in your prompts.

If you're comfortable hooking things together in a node based UI, I would recommend ComfyUI as it can give you greater flexibility around how your images are generated.

What kind of images are you trying to generate? I can maybe give some more specific advice on that.

F2hP18Foam··on The chat control proposal does not belong in democratic societies
Statement A is wrong because the person who said it is stupid. Why are they stupid? Because they said statement A.

Using circular logic to refute someone's point isn't too smart either.

F2hP18Foam··on Show HN: InvokeAI, an open source Stable Diffusion toolkit and WebUI
I wonder if the same will happen to Midjourney or Dall-E. I have generated images on Midjourney that literally had a 'Shutterstock' watermark plastered across them. This watermark was conspicuously missing when the image was upscaled.
F2hP18Foam··on DreamFusion: Text-to-3D using 2D Diffusion
You're right, we are in agreement.
F2hP18Foam··on Comfy Software: A software aesthetic for hackers with depression
I agree with you, but it's easier said than done. Especially if you're already depressed, drudging forward can seem like the path of least resistance, even though it often isn't.
F2hP18Foam··on DreamFusion: Text-to-3D using 2D Diffusion
I'm sure people born with one eye are perfectly able to understand the concept of 3D
F2hP18Foam··on Why do some humans love chili peppers?
This is legitimately my tactic, and yet I still wonder why my dog attempts to eat things that cause him issues.

Maybe he has a better understanding of the risks and rewards than I gave him credit for.

F2hP18Foam··on Things people blamed on bicycles
Why is energy expenditure the metric we're using to judge who should stop? In my opinion the metric should be this: whoever has the highest capability to cause injury to another person should be the one who has to be more careful and considerate. Injury is more consequential and potentially life-altering than energy expenditure. From this perspective, motor vehicles should give way to bikes, bikes to pedestrians.
