F-W-M··on EU strikes deal to regulate ChatGPT, AI tech
I always get annoyed at the website.
F-W-M··on Show HN: Play a pen-and-paper game that is almost unknown in the US and Europe
That was my introduction to vectors in my sixth year of school.
F-W-M··on New York may ban noncompete employment agreements and Wall Street is not happy
It's a great start into freelancing though. They have to pay you 60% of your former salary upto 110% of it.
F-W-M··on New York may ban noncompete employment agreements and Wall Street is not happy
Non-competes can work out if the rules actually favor the workers. I had one while working for a HFT in Germany and would sign it again.
F-W-M··on YouTube's plan backfires, people are installing better ad blockers
You build it around torrents and might earn the maintenance costs back with some non-intrusive ads.
F-W-M··on California suspends Cruise's autonomous vehicle deployment
> This is true even in places where the speed limit is 85 mph, and the slower end of the flow of traffic is 95 mph.

Once traffic rules are enforced by autonomous cars that don't let you go over the speed limit, we can start raising the limit to more realistic levels. I guess currently it is priced in that everyone goes over by x km/h.

F-W-M··on Background job queues and priorities may be the wrong path
Ah thanks. Didn't hear 'long polling' in that context yet.
F-W-M··on Background job queues and priorities may be the wrong path
What do you mean by a long polling state machine? Is it just a state machine that gets fed via long polling http requests?
F-W-M··on ZeroMQ – Relicense from LGPL3 and exceptions to MPL 2.0
No. I wanted to say that it is very easy to shoot yourself in the foot with zeromq if you put no thought into designing your protocols.

It's a task that you have to do, since the basic guarantees of 0MQ are almost never enough and is very well explained in the guide. But you have to read it carefully.

F-W-M··on Fifteen Word Processor Commandments (1984)
Does anyone have the mentioned superfile manual?
F-W-M··on ZeroMQ – Relicense from LGPL3 and exceptions to MPL 2.0
Worked on a team that used zeromq for a trading system. Worked well, but if you do not read the guide and get a good grip on what guarantees are provided by zero mq.
F-W-M··on Desalination system could produce freshwater that is cheaper than tap water
What's the problem with parking lots?
F-W-M··on Dennis Austin, developer of PowerPoint, has died
Wouldn't it be optimal to have read, understood and thought about it before the meeting? Although this probably never happens, except maybe if you go full async and request a thoughtful response from everybody before a meeting might happen.
F-W-M··on Dennis Austin, developer of PowerPoint, has died
Why do meetings start with dedicated reading time? Did people always come unprepared? How can I imagine this? Is it like: "Hey folks, thanks for showing up. This is the document we'll be discussing in 20min. Please read it now?".

I don't think it's bad. I like written, long form content. It just is very far from what I know.

F-W-M··on Get a cable modem, go to jail (1999)
With a modern holster there is no need for an additional safety. Keep gun in holster, holster protects trigger. If you really need a gun and be ready to fire and only then: get gun out of holster.
F-W-M··on My $0->$100M->$0 in 5 years story
"Strings are sequences of characters" or sth. like that.
F-W-M··on How a startup loses its spark
In Germany it is very hard to fire people but there is a six month period in the beginning, where one can be fired without reason. Is it possible to gauge a new employee during that timeframe?
F-W-M··on 80% of bosses say they regret earlier return-to-office plans
It's harder 2 weeks a year, but that is so easily offset by the 50 other weeks that make your workout, eating habbits, routines and responsibilities so much easier.
F-W-M··on Git-appraise – Distributed Code Review for Git
If they are in there own commits, you just drop them.

Honestly the average level of git skills, doesn't allow such a workflow.

F-W-M··on The back-to-office backfire: Companies ending WFH perks lose out on top talent
First two jobs out of university everyone pulled its weight. Great team spirit and atmosphere in both jobs, but after this the experience in my third job hit me even harder. Suddenly I am one of those two guys and the other one quits.
F-W-M··on Trying to find some life on the Usenet (2020)
forum.dlang.org is NNTP with e-mail and forum interface.
F-W-M··on Trying to find some life on the Usenet (2020)
GMail does not support threads?!
F-W-M··on Why the Remote-Work Debate Stays So Heated
I switched jobs and two weeks later started the corona lockdown. I was able to get up to speed, form meaningful connections to team members, and do some of my best work for two years.

My productivity tanked completely ever since we were forced back to the office. It almost burned me out.

F-W-M··on How Did We End Up Here? (2015) [video]
I nodded a lot during this talk from Todd Montgomery and Martin Thompson about building Software Systems.
F-W-M··on Data-Oriented Design (2018)
Would you mind to elaborate a bit on your system? I tried to do something similar for an algo trading system, but in the end I hadn't enough entities to justify the approach.
F-W-M··on I Built Linux from Scratch
Never heard of buildroot. Interesting!
F-W-M··on The PostgreSQL documentation and the limitations of community
For many things it's simple enough to read the code, did this e.g. for the Configuration system in ASP.NET Core. Dunno, if I could do this with postgres.
F-W-M··on Ask HN: Are you faster navigating windows with i3 than other window managers?
I am using it for years and with great success, but I still mess up a lot when configuring more complex layouts.
F-W-M··on Horrible Code, Clean Performance
LLVM had that problem. But if you are already writing in C++, where do you switch to? (Spoiler: it's code generation).
F-W-M··on Horrible Code, Clean Performance
IO on the UI thread.
