ExtraE··on Googlespeak – How Google limits thought about antitrust
I just tried this (firefox on iOS, new england). Google asked for my location and I said “no”.

TLDR: 2 ads, the rest organic.

Top-2 were ads, a maps widget, organic result, people also ask, 4 organic results, people also search for, images, 4 organic, 1 ad.

#1 and 2 are both very important.
ExtraE··on What we can learn from Google Plus (2014)
I think the good will comes from YouTube doing something useful for the user with the collected info (video recommendations).
ExtraE··on Reflections on 10k Hours of Programming
Interesting. IANAL but is saying “we have to do this dumb workaround because of xyz” criticism under (US) fair use?
ExtraE··on Reflections on 10k Hours of Programming
One way I’ve found is to quote the thing I’m citing. Context and length dependent, of course. This also has the advantage of showing how the doc looked when you write the code, so the comment rots less slowly (and if something changes, you can see by comparing the excerpts)
ExtraE··on Why we don't waterbomb at night?
I disagree. This sounds like a reasonable summary. Or perhaps: “[parent]. However, technological improvements have enabled safer nighttime flying, and so Australia is starting to incorporate it.”
ExtraE··on Good Design is Imperfect Design, Part 1: Honest Names
Heh. You didn’t have a perfect example but you went with what you had and shipped.
ExtraE··on How to boost your popularity on OkCupid using CSRF and a JSON type confusion
Perhaps it’s 2-use?
ExtraE··on What science can tell us about C and C++'s security (2020)
Yes. I don't think rewrite everything was what the original author was arguing for, either.
ExtraE··on New in Git: switch and restore
Is there space in the world for an all new (v2) set of porcelain commands? (IMO yes)
ExtraE··on Show HN: A web-based matrix client: Cinny
As a side-note, I wish I could give lastpass a regex or pattern or something to check auto-generate guesses against (it would be great to have a [trusted] library of these, too). I often end up regenerating or tweaking my auto generate settings a few times for every new account I create to get around this stuff.
ExtraE··on Evil programmer's tip: avoid “easy” things (2016)
I mean, outside of small-startup environments, who cares? Do I have a moral responsibility to care? Maybe. Do I have a real reason to care outside of that tenuous-at-best ethical reason? If you believe the author's piece, no.
ExtraE··on A case against security nihilism
I mean, the threat model is that 1. Memory leaks/errors are bad 2. Programmers make those mistakes all the time 3. Using memory safe languages is cheap Therefore, 4. We should use memory safe languages more often
ExtraE··on A privacy war is raging inside the W3C
I mean for websites to get paid at all this has to be the case. It could by your browser, os, whatever.
ExtraE··on Piped: A privacy-friendly YouTube front end which is efficient by design

ExtraE··on A privacy war is raging inside the W3C
I suspect the answer will be paying a bit more for internet and having ISPs forward that fee onto websites.

Your point in the floating-point discussion is true, but you’re wrong about this one- linguistics is a descriptive field, not a prescriptive one.
ExtraE··on WD My Book users wake up to find their data deleted
The article says you can manage them from a WD site.
ExtraE··on WD My Book users wake up to find their data deleted
Anyone got a link?
ExtraE··on WD My Book users wake up to find their data deleted
I’m confused by the edit- WD is Western Digital, no?
ExtraE··on New York Senate passes Right to Repair bill
I’m not sure I disagree, but e-waste maybe?
ExtraE··on New York Senate passes Right to Repair bill
You joke, but LG makes a <3lb (1.36kg) 17” laptop. That’s impressive. (I can’t vouch for its quality, I don’t have one).

Samsung makes a 15.6” laptop that weighs 2.6lbs, which is extremely practical. I’m planning on getting one. I wouldn’t be if it had the bulk and weight of a removable battery.

ExtraE··on Reimagining video infrastructure to empower YouTube
When did google buy the .youtube TLD? Anyone know how to view a list of corporate TLDs? (Yes I know they’re mostly owned by ICAN anymore and all therefore corporate in some sense).
ExtraE··on Browse Every Awesome List on GitHub
Awesome-n: auto scan GitHub for awesome-n lists and create awesome-n+1. Although 2 of these in a fight wouldn't be great.
ExtraE··on Why I prefer making useless stuff
I mean, your point is a good one but those are bad examples.

The printing press was made to print bibles in bulk.

The internet was made by the DOD and universities, not to transfer large files/images but for small text documents.

Solar came from LEDs which were discovered by accident by scientists working on other semiconductors (trying to find something useful), but to your credit probably explored because it was interesting. 99% of the work done on solar now is to do something useful.

> (ps sorry for the over use of first person - just wanted to share my perspective)

Why do you feel bad about/dislike first person (in this context)?
