Erratic6576··on Show HN: Temporary Note – Convenient way to use a browser tab as a notepad
On the new versions there’s something popping up whenever you move your cursor to the bottom right corner of the screen. I’ve so far managed to avoid it
Erratic6576··on Scary AI recognizes passwords by the sound of your typing
Certain crucial passwords can be kept in the memory. There are thousands of menial logins though and a password manager might be more reliable than the memory
Erratic6576··on Scary AI recognizes passwords by the sound of your typing
I was thinking Password manager + TOTP or yubikey.

Of course it does also have downsides. I don’t store all my passwords there.

Erratic6576··on Scary AI recognizes passwords by the sound of your typing
Don’t type passwords. Use 2FA whenever possible
Erratic6576··on Apple to move key iPad engineering resources to Vietnam
It’s still cheaper than hiring American workers
Erratic6576··on Cyborg cockroach could be the future of earthquake search and rescue
Just like humans are. Our programming tells us to eat, socialise, reproduce, sleep, etc. and it compels us to obey our programming in more subtle or explicit ways.

Just because we pretend to be more complicated does not make us any better than cockroaches. From an ethical perspective, roaches are superior to human beings because they have never created factories and chemicals to set other living roaches alive, nor do they plan to remove their kin from a particular territory by bombing baby roaches to death by the thousands.

Erratic6576··on Commuting time of more than 30 min one way linked to higher chance of depression
Yeah but where do you park the ferry when you arrive at work?
Erratic6576··on U.S. students' math scores plunge in global education assessment
my parents made sure we got good English as foreign language skills because they knew it’s crucial. I guess maths would have been more useful longterm
Erratic6576··on System-wide open source ad blocker for Mac, Windows, and Linux
If that was my macOS start menu, I’d smash my display with anything I had at hand
Erratic6576··on Sellafield: Europe’s most toxic nuclear site
so they titled a song “Radioaktivität” but they blatantly skipped talking about radioactivity and only spoke about radio activity? I would have thought they’d be more subtle
Erratic6576··on Sellafield: Europe’s most toxic nuclear site
Thanks I’ve just deciphered the cryptic word missing after almost 3 decades. My mind started to sing the tune right upon reading the word.
Erratic6576··on Lack of sunlight during the day is worse than electric lighting at night
According to the rumours of torture being committed there against Julian Assange, the UK seems a likely candidate
Erratic6576··on 3,800-km cable offers glimpse of a global power grid
Isn’t is simpler to pump the energy into a market pool connecting Morocco to the Iberian peninsula and connecting Britain to mainland Europe through the tunnel with France?

Creating a cable to power a place thousands of km away seems rather inefficient compared to connecting the power stations to a grid of cables which already exists.

Erratic6576··on COP28: Countries launch declaration to triple nuclear energy by 2050
From an economic point of view, this is a catastrophe. Solar panels will become more and more efficient, making nuclear power an utterly expensive alternative. Private investors are building plants everywhere in my region.

Not only solar panels, but windmills as well

Why can’t we apply liberal market forces to nuclear energy? If it was worth it, heaps of corporations would be investing in it.

Erratic6576··on RavynOS Finesse of macOS. Freedom of FreeBSD
Can’t you tell VMware that it’s a FreeBSD installation?
Erratic6576··on Proposal on implementing permanent time zones in the European Union
We need a two-tier schedule for businesses and institutions. Summer time and winter time. So, when authorities switch from CEST to CET or viceversa and clocks are adjusted an hour, schedules are inverted to leave things as they were according to the Sun.

So if after the switch you are supposed to start an hour earlier, you just start one hour later, thus starting at the same time according to the sun.

This might sound crazy but the craziness of making people switch clocks is evil and cruel

Erratic6576··on Yabai – A tiling window manager for macOS
Rectangle is free and open source software, there are no strings attached that I know of
Erratic6576··on What should I do if I suspect one of the journal reviews I got is AI-generated?
We just need some sort of AI which can help us filter through all the bullshit
Erratic6576··on The key to mother and child well-being may be many caregivers
What makes humanity unsustainable is not the amount of human but the unleashed greed of a minority.

100 billion aborigines would pollute less than a handful of western oligarchs

Erratic6576··on The key to mother and child well-being may be many caregivers
Yeah but no. Pleasure is brutal manipulation at play.

Sex is short-lived pleasure, dopamine. Family relationships are long-term happiness, serotonins.

Erratic6576··on Former Labor Secretary Found What Work Is Like Now (2022)
Shouldn’t they have to pay taxes if they printed it like that?
Erratic6576··on Court: Cloudflare Is Liable for Pirate Site, but Not as a DNS Provider
SIM cards are associated with a cell tower, which is located in a population, so your anonymous card is tied to your image in any of the billions of CCTV monitors which track citizens as they move
Erratic6576··on Download all of Wikipedia on your phone
I suspect that chatGPT was shy about giving me exact quotes of Latin works for fears of disclosing its training sources and risk copyright infringement lawsuits.
Erratic6576··on The key to mother and child well-being may be many caregivers
Primitive hunter-gatherer societies might have raised their children in a communal way, with relatives and friends living nearby, always interrupting and nagging us.

We, the supreme civilisation, at the summit of evolution, are locked in in individual cages, disconnected from each other, so we can spend more quality time attached to our screens.

We are “civilised to death”

Erratic6576··on The key to mother and child well-being may be many caregivers
I try to teach my baby to be patient when he’s hangry, but he slaps, punches, kicks and bites.

He doesn’t even say “I’m hangry, you incompetent giant”. He demands to be held in arms, he punches, bites and slaps my face. He did this for the first time when he was around 3 months old.

Patience is learnt through many years, specially when the belly is full.

Hangry people can turn violent, like most restaurant workers know.

As “the whole-brained child” book states, children can not be reasonable when they are in a tantrum

Erratic6576··on The key to mother and child well-being may be many caregivers
Unlike kittens and superior animals, ape babies are not meant to be abandoned at any point, under no circumstances. They are meant to be carried around by their mothers or substitute relatives, clinging to them, so their sudden whimsical needs can be catered to immediately, or else you run the risk of developing an insecure attachment relationship.

Google images for “monkey attached mother”.

Erratic6576··on The key to mother and child well-being may be many caregivers
Yeah maybe that’s why women live longer in order to help with the exhausting process of raising their grandchildren [1].

We love to take care of babies, regardless of (or maybe because of) how clingy and dependent they are.

From an Evolutionary point of view, This relationship between needy babies and abnegated caregivers might have given rise to a complementary schimogenesis according to Gregory Bateson, in which babies might have evolved to be more and more dependent, because having more and more invested caregivers produces fitter offspring.

Parenthood is a self-inflicted sabotage and I cannot understand how come there are so many parents bearing children worldwide.

Erratic6576··on What has changed in CPU cores in M3 chips?
I have been moving twice a year (June-September) with an iMac for the last six years and I think it’s been an overcomplication mistake, specially in March 2020.

I thought desktops are more future proof

Erratic6576··on What has changed in CPU cores in M3 chips?
I was hoping SSDs would be fast and durable enough these days to make ram redundant but here we are, back to the past in terms of price per kb
Erratic6576··on EU Parliament backs extensive net-zero industry 'wishlist', including nuclear
My only consolation is that renewable energy development and free markets are going to make “green” nuclear energy completely obsolete, because solar panels are way cheaper to install and run
