Epskampie··on Solving Advent of Code Puzzles with GitHub Copilot: Day 1
It’s interesting to see the mix of local identifiers and public code that copilot is able to generate. In the end I disabled it because I had to keep stopping to check its suggestions, really breaking the programming flow. But I imagine with some content and UI improvements it will be invaluable in the future.
Epskampie··on Users revolt as Microsoft bolts a short-term financing app onto Edge
I understand the strong incentives for browser makers to try to monetize, but still it’s annoying. We don’t want pocket, we don’t want flock, we don’t want financing. Just let us use the web.
Epskampie··on AWS free tier data transfer expansion
AWS free tier is horrible. You have to enter a creditcard to sign up, and then there is no way to prevent it being charged when you go over the limit for some reason. If you get on the frontpage of HN for example, you might be majorly screwed.

It's a test account, I just want it to shut down when the limit is reached.

Epskampie··on The New Life of PHP – The PHP Foundation
Nikita leaving is indeed quite a blow for PHP. I’ve been reading some of the rfcs recently, and a lot of the good ones came from him. Also he seemed to have the clout to get them passed.

Nikita, if you’re reading this, thanks for all your work improving a language i use daily. Best of luck in your next adventure.

Epskampie··on Remix – A framework focused on web fundamentals and modern UX
Also the docs don’t have scroll restoration when you use the browser back button. You’d think a framework that prides itself on using the web platform would have that working automatically.
Epskampie··on “Click to subscribe, call to cancel” is illegal, FTC says
This is the reason i have a label next to my doorbell that says: "Donations only without subscription and to volunteers". Since then we've not have a lot of charities ring the bell, and the ones that do I actually want to give to.
Epskampie··on Safari Ruined My Tuesday
That’s good to know actually, thanks.
Epskampie··on Why does anyone use Angular in production?
You think

‘const [count, setCount] = useState()’

is normal javascript? It runs completely counter to the way functions and variables normally work, using some global store behind your back.

The idea that react is “just javascript” has gone out the window with hooks.

Epskampie··on Oculess – Removes account requirements and telemetry from Oculus Quest devices
The team at facebook will be able to show bigger sales, making the next version more likely. You will count as a "oculus quest user" in steam stats etc. Developers will be more likely to support this headset. Etc etc etc. The market is still so small that network effect like these can be huge.

Facebook is selling at a loss in an attempt to destroy the competition and build another monopoly. They don't care if they don't make a profit now, as they will be able to gauge you later.

Don't buy facebook stuff.

Epskampie··on Esbuild – An extremely fast JavaScript bundler
I really don’t, webpack config was was a cluster&€@ from day 1. Also, webpacks goal always was to do everything and the kitchen sink, much different from esbuild.
Epskampie··on Apple's Power Move to Kneecap Facebook Advertising Is Working
The issue is not where the matching is done with data gathered on facebook, the issue is whether they can track you accross other apps. They can't anymore, and "matching on the phone" won't make a lick of difference.
Epskampie··on We Need Software Updates Forever
Also, doesn’t the PSP use this little disk cartridges? I don’t see why you couldn’t still play those games.
Epskampie··on Outdated Answers: accepted answer is now unpinned on Stack Overflow
I use SO every single day. It’s alive and thriving, and I’m happy for that.
Epskampie··on The numeric colour palettes in modern web frameworks explained
The thing is that variants of the exact same color can make your design look pretty bland sometimes. In this way I can see where microsoft is coming from with their different hues of blue, even though the naming is obviously terrible.
Epskampie··on For developers, Safari is crap and outdated
Notifications can only be sent after you “install” a website as a PWA. Same for background stuff. Don’t want that? Just use it as a regular site.
Epskampie··on Onyx Boox Mira Pro is a 25 inch E INK Monitor
Not trying to mom you, but have you tried turning down the brightness until it’s the same as a sheet of paper in the same location? It’s made a big difference for me, but takes some getting used to.
Epskampie··on I wrote a children's book / illustrated guide to Apache Kafka
I love this kind of high-level introduction of what a thing is. Sometimes very hard to find for technologies. Also otters are cute.
Epskampie··on Allies Believe U.S. 'No Longer a Good Model of Democracy,' Poll Shows
I’d say the problem is more in the two party system. If you think about all the opinions one can have about how a country should be run, it’s plain weird to only have two choices.
Epskampie··on Apple is threatening to remove Fanhouse unless they give 30% of creator earning
Yeah, not supported on iOS.
Epskampie··on WebContainers: Run Node.js natively in the browser
This is going full inception mode. Nodejs is compiled to wasm (like assembly for your browser), and then loaded inside the browser, which can then run javascript.

So a full JS engine is loaded, completely separate from the built-in one.

Epskampie··on Apple Is Holding Back the Creator Economy
You mean the web? The most empowering and useful “platform” in the whole world because there is no single bigcorp behind it.
Epskampie··on Putting an Ultra-Tiny Linux Board in a Phone Charger Eventually
The example he shows is pretty big (but not suspisiously big) https://miro.medium.com/max/720/0*jUoQD3Udknc9b5Lx.jpg

Since there are a lot smaller chargers out there this should still be possible. https://store.storeimages.cdn-apple.com/4668/as-images.apple...

Epskampie··on It's your device, you should be able to repair it
Recycling and repairability are not mutually exclusive, more often quite the opposite.

Also, there are many devices where i don’t care for newer models, like the dishwasher.

Epskampie··on It's your device, you should be able to repair it
I’ve recently started repairing more of my own stuff, and it’s actually really fun. I’ve replaced the clickers and scroll sensor on my Razer mouse, resoldered bad connections on our failed washing machine, and removed a piece of dust that was behind a layer right in the center of my new monitor. You feel more proud of a product you’ve repaired yourself.

In these repairs i noticed that information (manuals, but also being able to discuss on forums) and parts are crucial, so i’m glad to see that those are the things encoded in law. A further measure could be forbidding forced (hardware level) linking of parts.

Epskampie··on Java for Everything (2014)
“ the language is actually appropriate in a wide variety of situations, and has libraries to back it up in all of those”
Epskampie··on PHP in 2021
I would say next.js comes closest for a ‘nodejs server framework’ for me. It’s really great to only use one language for frontend, backend and templating.
Epskampie··on DuckDuckGo Extension to Block FLoC, Google’s New Tracking Method in Chrome
It's not profitable yet because people can still switch to other browsers. When chrome has a monopoly, they will be gone in a heartbeat.

Also, look into what chrome recently did to the APIs adblocker extensions use, even in the current market google is already making adblockers less potent in chrome.

Epskampie··on DuckDuckGo Extension to Block FLoC, Google’s New Tracking Method in Chrome
The "solution" of installing an extension is a bit shortsighted. Google can and will just remove the possibility for extensions to block FLOC in the future, when it's deemed profitable to do so.
Epskampie··on Spreadsheet is a software development paradigm
For those interested in trying out the spreadsheet model in actual programming i recommend Mobx. It tracks what values are used in which calculation, and auto-runs them again, just like a spreadsheet.
Epskampie··on Testing a few new designs that don't show the public dislike count
It’s under the three dots icons at your overview page.
