EngineerBetter··on Will Kubernetes Collapse Under the Weight of Its Complexity?
I was at KubeCon, and had a similar experience. Lots of engineers excites about all the technical possibilities, and less discussion of developer productivity.

It reminds me a little of in the 00's everyone thought their company should write its own CMS. I think we're in danger of every writing their own PaaS.

This is why things like Deis and Cloud Foundry exist. Most app developers should not have to understand the full depth and breadth of Kubernetes.

EngineerBetter··on Chess boxing
I did some chess boxing once as part of a stag (batchelor?) party for a fellow jiu-jitsuka.

It was great fun, and folks take it seriously. We were embarrassingly bad at chess by comparison (and pretty ropey at the boxing too).

EngineerBetter··on Evolution of the English Alphabet
The author addresses this very point, highlighting that the chart is simplified from a more detailed work.
EngineerBetter··on How did we end up with containers?
Containers != Images
EngineerBetter··on Report of Active Shooter at YouTube HQ
I hope everyone is safe.

Please, America: sort it out. Politics aside, it hurts to see this stuff happening again and again so needlessly.

EngineerBetter··on YouTube incident: 'Shots fired' near HQ in northern California
I hope everyone is safe.

Please, America: sort it out.

EngineerBetter··on Tesla owner recreates fatal Autopilot crash, nearly crashes as well
> Tesla's autopilot is only something like single camera image recognition

It absolutely is. Even the AP 2.0/2.5 hardware only uses one camera at the moment.

EngineerBetter··on Tesla owner recreates fatal Autopilot crash, nearly crashes as well
> Tesla should have detailed maps of this big roads

Their imminent software update adds exactly that. They took their navigation data in house because the atuff they used before wasn't detailed enough.

EngineerBetter··on Tesla owner recreates fatal Autopilot crash, nearly crashes as well
I'm danged if I'd let it get so close to disaster if I was recreating this. One tug of the steering wheel in the wrong direction is enough for me to assert myself and get the car to cancel Autopilot.
EngineerBetter··on Tesla owner recreates fatal Autopilot crash, nearly crashes as well
Autopilot is following the strong white line to the left, which is what the simple system is designed to do.

It (currently) follows road markings, and/or the car in front. That's it, and that's why you don't leave it unattended - spoken as a Model X owner.

As a Brit, I'm astounded at the US road design. You'd never see something like that over here, and I've never seen motorway (freeway) lane markers so worn away.

Autopilot did what it is designed to do, which in this case was the wrong thing. The driver was not paying attention, which is easy to do when you have no physical buttons in the car and often operate a touchscreen. The poor state of the road also contributed, both with the lack of steel barrier and the worn-out markings.

Will road markings be kept in better condition for the sake of self-driving cars, I wonder?

Would LIDAR have helped, or would the presented surface area of the concrete block be too small to act upon?

EngineerBetter··on Tesla driver reproduces fatal autopilot accident [video]
One does not buy something as expensive as a Model X without reading all the words on thr configurator page. Said with experience.

This is not a whimsical purchasing decision.

EngineerBetter··on Will MySpace ever lose its monopoly? (2007)
I think you missed the joke.
EngineerBetter··on I usually run 'w' first when troubleshooting unknown machines
Genuine question: how many HN readers log on to boxes with user accounts that belong to humans, where some state may have been mutated?

My experience of the last five years is so heavily weighted to (effectively) immutable infrastructure that checking to see who had been on a box hadn't event crossed my mind.

EngineerBetter··on Data on 1.2M Facebook users from 2005 (2011) [use archive.org url in thread]
It was 2005. The web was a different place back then. Although it's a bit earlier, ICQ used monotonically increasing user IDs as its addressing mechanism.
EngineerBetter··on Palantir Wins $876M U.S. Army Contract
Nope, he was living in the north. Sadly I forget exactly where.
EngineerBetter··on Palantir Wins $876M U.S. Army Contract
I used to teach jiu-jitsu to an Iraqi Kurd asylum seeker in London. Despite his own people being gassed, he preferred Saddam. If you kept on the right side of the powers-that-be, you could run businesses and have a life. This is in contrast to the anarchy that ensued after the West's invasion.
EngineerBetter··on Guide to Using YubiKey as a SmartCard for GPG and SSH
One of our engineers, Paddy Steed, wrote a series of articles on how we each use a Yubikey for SSH, UTF 2FA, and access to 1Password on shared machines when we pair-program. The SSH key is generated on the Yubikey, so it never touches your machine's filesystem.

EngineerBetter··on The sudden death of the website?
As someone who remembers the usability horrors of the 90s as wr stumbled our way to figuring out what worked, I think the author is misidentifying the issue. Websites work just fine now - the issue is Amazon having an economy of scale and business model whereby they almost all other e-commerce sites are an irrelevance.
EngineerBetter··on Containers Will Not Fix a Broken Culture
If an enterprise adopts a technology that allows them to go faster, but doesn't change any of their processes to make them go faster, they have effectively thrown money down the drain. I'm sick of seeing tech companies eagerly switch out one tech for another without at least _trying_ to address the people and process problems.

Stop trying to reduce costs. Work out your cost of delay, and focus on getting things done more quickly and more effectively, not more cheaply and more efficiently.

EngineerBetter··on Driving a "Green car" vs cycling
Also, countries like Norway manage to generate most of their electricity from renewables. Just because most countries don't doesn't mean it's impossible.
EngineerBetter··on Driving a "Green car" vs cycling
A typical article decrying EVs on the assumption that nothing will change.

If every house ends up with a solar array and an equivalent of a Tesla Powerwall (other brands are available) then there won't be massive demand on the grid.

You don't have to fast-charge a Leaf. You can charge it overnight.

I pay for a "100% renewable" electricity tariff. Of course not all of the energy I draw is from renewables, but it is all reinvested in renewables.

If people continue to adopt EVs, adopt renewable tariffs, and adopt self-generation and self-storage, everything will be fine.

No, an EV is not as green as a bike. But have you ever tried getting furniture from IKEA 60 miles across country on a bike, with a baby and toddler in tow?

Disclaimer: avid cyclist (6 miles a day to commute) and EV driver since 2013.

EngineerBetter··on Asynchronous PHP: Why?
PHP was originally called Personal Home Page Tools. Perhaps people should consider that before building large and complex systems using it.

EngineerBetter··on Analysts See Oil Demand Peaking by 2030 as Electric Vehicles Boom
Used Renault Zoes are exceptionally cheap in the UK. £69/month battery lease, and then about £2k for the car.
EngineerBetter··on Commitment vs. Forecast: A Subtle But Important Change to Scrum (2011)
I wrote an article on the negative psychological impact of commitments in sprints (https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/scrum-makes-you-dumb-daniel-j...). It's great to see renewed focus on shifting away from a term that has been used to make developers' working lives unpleasant, leads to lower-quality code, and gives false certainty to stakeholders.
EngineerBetter··on No evidence to support link between violent video games and behaviour
As someone who has taught martial arts to/trained with a fair few military folks, as well as a gamer and one-time indie game developer, I've always thought the link is minimal and not causal.

Convincing the average human to do violence to another takes a _lot_ of effort. Real violence is nothing like games, and has a viscerality that games cannot prepare one for. I would question whether anyone that conflates the two has ever had to inflict injury on another human.

If games made people violent, the military would send people copies of GTA V. Yes, the American army have their own game, but that's a recruitment tool and not a violence-desensitiser.

EngineerBetter··on Ask HN: What's the recommended method of adding authentication to a REST API?
It makes me sad that in 2018 that it is entirely reasonable for such a simple and common question to elicit so many answers. Of course no one solution fits all use cases, but skimming the comments there seems to be a very diverse range of suggestions. Wouldn't it be lovely if there was one stand-out solution that was so good it was a no-brainer?

FWIW I have ended up using OAuth2 for this situation a few times, and it always feels more complicated than I'd like.

EngineerBetter··on Using a Yubikey for GPG and SSH
One of our engineers wrote a series of blogs about how to use a Yubikey for SSH auth, OTP2FA, U2F, and logging into 1Password on shared machines.

I wish AWS supported U2F, it'd make my day a lot less frustrating.

We do a lot of pairing and rotating on shared machines, so it's really danged useful.

EngineerBetter··on More than 94% of net new electricity capacity in the USA from renewables in 2017
You appear to have mistaken generation capacity (discussed in the Electrek article) with usage (cited by you).
