EngineerBetter··on Brexit uncertainty means UK is uninvestable
I'm not sure that two of the world's richest companies investing is great sign of confidence. If their investment comes to nought, it wouldn't make a dent in their balance sheet.
EngineerBetter··on Why Netflix Rolled Its Own Node.js Functions-As-a-Service Runtime
I find it easier to live with if you consider it to mean "daemonless". So not about hardware, but what software you don't have in your project.
EngineerBetter··on First private Chinese attempt to send rocket into space fails
There seem to be a lot of stories with a negative view of China on HN.
EngineerBetter··on Consistency Without Clocks: FaunaDB's Distributed Transaction Protocol
The global log sounds like a lynchpin but I didn't see a good explanation in the article. It sounds like all synchronization is done at the level of this log? If so, isn't that a bit of a bottleneck?
EngineerBetter··on Building a better gov.uk, step by step
I know GDS uses Cloud Foundry a lot (as do the US and Korean governments). How much of gov.uk is deployed on CF?
EngineerBetter··on Belgian Air Force F-16 destroyed by fire during maintenance

EngineerBetter··on Why open office design makes people less productive
Folks who practice pairing and mobbing would probably disagree about constant collaboration.
EngineerBetter··on Why open office design makes people less productive
Why are "open offices are bad" stories so popular on HN?

I've only ever worked in open plan offices, and can't say I've ever had a problem concentrating. I'm not sure what alternatives are popular, but if an employer forced me to work in a cubicle I'd immediately quit without hesitation. Having visited cubicle offices, they strike me as inhumane detention centres.

That hierarchy of importance is quite apt.

If the game concept doesn't sell itself as an elevator pitch, then it doesn't matter how good the implementation is.

I once met an indie dev who was surprised that their Space Invaders mobile clone didn't sell on Windows Mobile, "despite its amazing particle effects."

EngineerBetter··on Did I just waste 3 years?
I have some sympathy, having made an indie game that gave a return of about £0.07/hour. Sold a few thousand copies, learnt a lot, made a lot of friends and had a lot of fun, but it certainly wasn't a great financial decision. And that was 10 years ago when it was a lot easier!

Games industry is like the music industry - if you do it for anything other than the love, you're likely to be disappointed. Your chances of 'making it' are astronomically small.

EngineerBetter··on Did I just waste 3 years?
It's hard, because novel mechanics are easily stolen. That said, the sooner you get user testing done, the sooner you validate your idea.
EngineerBetter··on Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen?
Thanks!
EngineerBetter··on A Relational Model of Data for Large Shared Data Banks (1970) [pdf]
The key, the whole key, and nothing but the key.
EngineerBetter··on Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen?
The Secret Life Of Waves. It made me think differently about life, the universe and the nature of complex systems.

I also found The Brain with David Eagleman a series that gave me revelations about all sorts of things.

EngineerBetter··on Remember when a glass of wine a day was good for you?
I recommend reading Judea Pearl's _The Book Of Why_, which details why historically science has been restricted to correlational observations, and how causal calculus can shed light on causality.
EngineerBetter··on The Number of Youth in Juvenile Detention in California Has Quietly Plummeted
"sew their chaos"?

I'm curious - I would've expected this to be "sow" as in "sowing seeds". Is this an American spelling?

EngineerBetter··on ESR: Slaves to speech suppression are masters of nothing
> f you highly your blackness, you risk disrupting your success at getting people to see you as a coder first.

Really interested to hear more of your thoughts/experiences on this point.

EngineerBetter··on Dark Motives and Elective Use of Brainteaser Interview Questions
Yep, we pair at least 80% of the time.
EngineerBetter··on Dark Motives and Elective Use of Brainteaser Interview Questions
We ask people to pair-program with an interviewer on a realistic task. No tricks, no brainteasers. We just get to see how people do the job we want them to do.
EngineerBetter··on Ask HN: What are your favorite non-fiction books of all time?
Antifragile by Nassim Nicholas Taleb has implications that I find impact very disparate areas. It's hard work in places though.

The Quark and the Jaguar by Murray Gell-Mann is a wonderfully readable and accessible intro to complexity, which again is a topic that seems to crop up all over the place.

Delusions of Gender by Cordelia Fine cites a shedload of research to dispel gender-related myths. It should be taught in schools, in my opinion.

EngineerBetter··on Airplane Mode: A concrete box designed to seduce you into digital disconnection
You can buy effective faraday pouches for car keys in many places. I have one, and can attest they work. They are no thicker than any other fabric.

I've not tried it for my phone though.

EngineerBetter··on Loopwheels: A vibration-reducing wheel with integral suspension
The top photo, immediately visible on my mobile browser without scrolling, is of their wheels on a wheelchair.
EngineerBetter··on How liberalism is enslaving Ireland as a colony of Silicon Valley
Thought-provoking. It seems a convenient decoy of massive tech companies to encourage as much personal freedom as possible, whilst being complicit in limiting the economic freedom of those outside of our Hacker News, coders' salary bubble.
EngineerBetter··on Ode to Gray
If it's not a poem, it's not an ode.
EngineerBetter··on We’re in a new age of obesity. How did it happen?
Ex-fat person here. 14 stone at 14 years of age.

I stopped eating so much and took up regular exercise.

I am no longer fat.

EngineerBetter··on Signaling in tech is some fucked up shit (2016)
Maybe it's my age, and a youth of grunge, metal, hardcore and punk, but whatever happened to doing what you love and not giving a shit what naysayers think?
