ElijahLynn··on CHOMPI portable sampler instrument is now open-source (hardware and software)
I've had my eye on one of these little musical wonder boxes for a long time!

I'm still hoping to try one soon. Maybe this is my time!

ElijahLynn··on Surprisingly complex waves reveal the brain's inner workings
Wow!!

“The work coming out is moving this from ‘Are they relevant?’ to ‘This is a major motif of how the cortex processes information,’” said Earl K. Miller(opens a new tab), a cognitive neuroscientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

ElijahLynn··on Dots: Always-on agents
I'm excited to try Dots out, I'm pretty tech savvy and don't really want to run my own open claw (I've successfully setup open claw previously). I'm very excited to have frontier intelligence at a decent price, be available in a managed always on agent.

Now I also just need open AI to release their own phone so I can summon it with my own hotword and not have to say okay f*** Google ever again.

My main concern is how I can have work accounts and personal accounts seamlessly be one and not have to log in to different ones.

ElijahLynn··on Show HN: HN.watch – Videos of all Hacker News posts
Love this! I've already used it a bunch to go through some HN posts that I might not have otherwise read.

It's definitely a form of TLDR, but for watching?!

This feels like some kind of parallel to Jev in that. If it is super fast, what other use cases may be unlocked it, as you suggest.

Also, I love the simple, easy to remember domain name, HN.watch!

ElijahLynn··on Git-bug: Distributed, offline-first bug tracker embedded in Git
Can this be used for more than just bugs? I feel like it can but the name is going to be limiting.
ElijahLynn··on Opus 5.5 is good at explainer videos
I expected sound, with an explainer video. Is there sound?
ElijahLynn··on Engineering Memory: On learning to memorize first 100 digits of pi (2024)
I also read moonwalking with Einstein and it's such a great read that I committed to memorizing the first digits of Pi. Which I did using my own custom PAO system.

And then the payoff... When I would tell people I could recite the first 100 digits of Pi they would be interested and say I want to hear it. So I would start and after about 20 numbers they would just say I believe you and that would be it. So I let that skill lapse.

I think my new talent would be better spent memorizing my credit card numbers and driver's license ID.

ElijahLynn··on 9 Ads per Minute: FIFA Cup 26 – "the price of the beautiful game"
I'm very grateful this research was done, and that the HN community voted to get this to the front page!

We need to focus on this as a global culture going forward. Very valuable to call this out.

ElijahLynn··on 9 Ads per Minute: FIFA Cup 26 – "the price of the beautiful game"
Success as a pro athlete means you are effectively an advertising shill to make your income.

That income doesn't come from tickets alone.

ElijahLynn··on ChatGPT Pro 20x plan is now unavailable for purchase
Nice, it's just temporary to make sure that existing Astra users are taken care of.

> we are working on adding more capacity as fast as we can.

Sounds to me like a company that cares about a great user experience!

ElijahLynn··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
Clear Hefty Slider bags are perfect for this! I have my cable boxes (Hefty Hi-Rise) filled with these bags, USB -A to USB-C, USB -C to USB-C (then sub-bagged with 65w, 100w, 240w) and so on.

Point is, use clear bags so you can see inside, and Hefty makes the slider version. I get the gallon and half gallon bags for this, and then the quart size as well. This is the Marie Kondo technique and it's amazing for keeping all these cables which are always coming in handy!

I keep the duplicates, because you never know which color and length is going to be the perfect fit for the current need!

ElijahLynn··on Apple Watch Ultra 4
Apple's marketing department is amazing, however, they just don't line up with the engineering department. I quit Apple long ago because they overhyped so many things, it feels misleading intentionally sometimes.

Very good marketers though, I'll give them that.

ElijahLynn··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
Public transit doesn't really go that far, when you talk about the last mile it's pretty limited.

But I do like what you're going with that and maybe we could have public autonomous car infrastructure that we all share. And just one large global team working on awesome autonomous vehicles. That could be little pod type vehicles for one person and bigger ones as needed. Cuz the road system is pretty broad and amazing right now.

ElijahLynn··on iPhone Duo
Ahh, this makes more sense then with the animation on Apple's marketing landing page. There that shows all the parts for the hinge that shows that the materials slide over each other and that must be what maintains the loose bend underneath the scenes.

Thank you

ElijahLynn··on iPhone Duo
I've been out of the loop on foldable phones, and this is question is not related to specifically the iPhone Duo. How does it work that it doesn't show a crease in the middle? What's the breakthrough technology there? Or is there a visible crease?
ElijahLynn··on Finder is so frustrating and has been since day one
Finder is one of the reasons I quit Mac. Main reason was that I had a knack for crashing it. And really not a fan of their marketing department not being completely in sync with their engineering department. Great marketing! But spent like five grand on a desktop Tower Mac and final cut Pro could not use all the cores. This was probably about 10-15 years ago.
ElijahLynn··on The Real Luxuries In Life
0. Money (home, food, security)
ElijahLynn··on How Fairphone built the Fairphone Gen 6+
The Fairphone 6+ looks really interesting but I'm not seeing it having the ability to wirelessly charge. I exclusively charge my Pixel 10 XL Pro (25w+) phone on a wireless charger now in the car and at my house and really like it, I don't want to go back to plugging in a USBC cable anymore unless it's an emergency. Am I missing something? Does it support Qi 2?
ElijahLynn··on Burnt out on a three-day week
Sounds like a mis-alignment in purpose, and meaning.

Also, potentially chronic sleep deprivation. (Sleep apnea, disrupted circadian rhythm, possible artificial light, news/social scrolling)

Humans need alignment there, then we thrive.

ElijahLynn··on How the Hell Did an Island Suddenly Appear, Then Vanish?
Anybody else immediately think of "Lost" when they read this headline?
ElijahLynn··on Ask HN: Laptop or Desktop?
I used to have lots of neck pain and back pain. Tried all sorts of things from standing desks to Aeron ergonomic chairs.

Now I strictly use a laptop, no more multi-monitor setup, no ergonomic keyboard, no standing desk, I have poor posture, and, I have no more back and neck pain.

Turns out that my anxiety was wiring my pain neurons together with certain pressures. Basically I was scared, and at some point the neurons that fired together wired together. It's a similar mechanism in the brain as somebody that has phantom limb pain.

What really helped me with this was the Boulder back pain study, which studied people using functional MRI machines and analyzing the pain region of people's brains. And using Pain Reprocessing Therapy and then analyzing with the functional MRI scans again. And many of the people who had a level 4 or higher pain for 5 years or more, got down to a zero or one. So I read that study, and I read the book on the study which is called The Way Out, and there's a film on the study as well called Pain Brain Film, and there's a podcast called Tell Me About Your Pain. I basically binge watched, listened and read all of this stuff and eventually unlearned my pain.

And now I have wonderful freedom with a laptop anywhere in the world! I can sit on a park bench or a s*** chair, or on a comfortable couch, I still have poor posture. I don't try to sit up straight anymore. And I don't have any chronic back pain or neck pain anymore.

ElijahLynn··on Ask HN: 30, burnt out, with 6-10 months of runway. What would you do?
Start with getting excessive amounts of sleep, if you haven't already. I've found that burnout for me is caused by sleep deprivation. And when I get enough sleep, I feel really good and the burnout lifts greatly, even for things I don't like working on but it can take a week or two to actually catch up on sleep for me.

I can tell if I'm sleep deprived when walking up stairs. If I'm sleep deprived it just feels hard. And if I'm not sleep deprived I actually have a little spring in my step up the stairs.

There's a good video by levelsio and how he comes up with ideas for things he wants to work on.

I only have one month of runway and I'm working nights and weekends to build my first product now. So you are in a good position if you have that much runway!

ElijahLynn··on Mom gets 6-month suspended sentence for letting 5-year-old walk to the pond
"I told [the authorities] that kids need to be able to take reasonable risks," he says, "in order to grow up non-anxious

Who would have thought that the actual anxious inducing situation came from trusted authorities, although well intentioned, causing harm to their community.

Very sad story. I hope this gets appealed.

ElijahLynn··on NASA's Perseverance Rover Captures Mars Vista as Clear as Day
Since there is a blue sky version and an origin/red sky version, at first I was thinking "wow, I didn't know blue skies were possible on Mars..." then I saw the red sky version to the right (arrow) of the blue sky version, which said "non-colorized" and my sanity was restored.

So, that leads me to think that just like humans on earth wear tinted sunglasses for orange, yellow, dark etc., Mars colonists will likely all have a pair of blue tinted shades to get back that blue sky feeling!

ElijahLynn··on NASA's Perseverance Rover Captures Mars Vista as Clear as Day
Just click the right arrow to see the original/red atmosphere version.
ElijahLynn··on The largest electric aircraft just flew [video]
Thought this was a great watch, as a first time founder myself!
ElijahLynn··on James Dyson Sold Us on a $400 Hair Dryer. Now He's Trying a $499 Toothbrush
The 10m interview (video) embedded on the article was a great watch (no toothbrush mentioned).

https://www.wsj.com/video/series/in-depth-features/how-dyson...

I found it educational on product development (as a new startup founder/product developer myself).

ElijahLynn··on Google Maps Showing 'Lake America' in U.S.
Okay, I'll get right on that and have it changed back tomorrow. Thanks for the encouragement, that is all I needed.
