Element_··on The Texas electric grid can barely keep the lights on
My understanding from reading about the TX power grid during the last Texas energy crisis is that even if it was interconnected to other states the interconnections wouldn't have been large enough to make a difference during a significant failure like the last one. Not sure about this most recent issue.

Element_··on Canada to ban foreigners from buying homes
Canada's immigration rate is over 1% it is very easy to get citizenship. There are already tons of front people with citizenship buying real estate on behalf of foreign investment pools. These measures are just PR, with 68% home ownership rate any measures that cooled home prices would be political suicide.
Element_··on Canada to ban foreigners from buying homes
It is dumb and will likely add fuel to the fire and the politicians know this. Canada has like a 68% home ownership rate meaning actually doing something to lower housing prices would be political suicide.

Element_··on China's state media buys Meta ads pushing Russia's line on war
It is pretty simple; a regional war in Ukraine weakens both the west and Russia while reducing their focus on China. China's best strategic interest is to keep the regional war going as long as possible. China is not really "helping" Russia, rather propping up one side of the information war to ensure the war grinds on.
Element_··on Why are semi trucks in the US and Europe so different? (2018)
Some jurisdictions have limits on how old trucks can be, or increased inspection frequency based on the age of the vehicle. Some businesses/terminals have restrictions on the age of equipment too, for instance the port of Vancouver is about to ban trucks older than 10 years. I believe regulations in TX are very lax compared to other parts of the world.

Element_··on Ask HN: Has Google search become quantitatively worse?
I find all of Google products are just constantly iterated upon for the sake of keeping staff busy and just seem to get worse as time goes on.

Google News used to be an easy to read html list that just worked. Now if you leave it open in a tab for more than 5mins you get a warning that it needs to be reloaded because of a software update.

Element_··on Show HN: Should I Get a House? a better rent vs. buy calculator
A co-worker from southern California just went to Arizona and purchased 4 homes as investments. He deemed them good value compared to current California market and was basically able to buy 4 units vs 1 around LA for the same price.

Wow that's the most interesting power point I have viewed in a long time! What a complex machine!
Element_··on CA crews handle tricky fire at Tesla factory
It depends, the larger petrochemical plants actually have their own fire departments with specialized equipment and training.
Element_··on What went wrong with the Texas power grid?
I am not sure it's that simple, I read some where else yesterday that at least one of the non-ERCOT grids had paid to winterize their local power plants after the last ice storm so their plants have been operational throughout this storm and as a result had no outages. I have no idea how accurate that is though, I don't know anything about the electric grid...
Element_··on Ercot nearly at capacity for Texas power grid
According to this article[1] you can equip them with cold weather packages that will allow them to operate down to -30C. I am guessing they wouldn't install those packages on turbines in Texas

Element_··on Do You Love Me? [video]
I totally agree, tech valuations this year are staggering, yet this company is only valued at 1.1bn even as they have started commercializing their spot robot. It seems like their robots could automate the truck-to-door problem with automated home deliveries. I guess we must be missing something...

Element_··on Tunnels in the US cost more than anywhere else
I believe in NYC the underground work is controlled by the labor unions, so hourly wages are actually very high. I believe getting one of those tunneling jobs is like winning the lottery to middle class people in the area.
