EdwardMSmith··on Starlink is now available across the United States
I have it at my cabin, and get anywhere between 100-200mb/s down and 10-20mb/s up.

I’m in a discounted area and “only” pay $90 per month, so that probably has something to do with the speeds.

I’m also fairly close to the downlink site - not sure if that has any effect.

There are no other non-satellite options available.

EdwardMSmith··on Ask HN: Charging a Client for On-Call Time
This is what I do for a customer that I've had a long relationship with.

For $X00 per month, they get business hours on-call access and up to 10 hours of actual support work. I think the retainer/hours thing is a lot more palatable.

I offered 24x7, but having done it many times over the years, my price for it was about 3x the business hours support price, and the company was b2b, so it was mostly business hours anyways, so it wasn't a big deal.

The cost (to me) of always having to carry a laptop around, always be in cell range, always be mostly sober, always have my phone ringer turned on, etc. requires significant compensation, and for me, $1000 per month is nowhere near enough to deal with that.

You've been doing it for a few months, so you have an idea of how disruptive it is, and having done it for free, the thought of $1000 for doing the same thing may sound nice now, but be sure to extrapolate it out another 6 months or so of being tethered 24x7 to work, and price it based on how you're going to feel then, not now.

EdwardMSmith··on Low/no code signup/demo page for startup?
I’ve used https://convertkit.com/ for this in the past.
EdwardMSmith··on Ask HN: Are there any safe alternatives to coffee for all-day sipping?
I enjoy sparkling water and Angostura bitters if I’m looking for a bit of flavor.
EdwardMSmith··on Ask HN: Hunting for a Framework
Feathers (https://feathersjs.com/) ticks a lot of your boxes.
EdwardMSmith··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
This is not correct.

32GB on the M1 Pro and 64GB on the M1 Max in the 14".

EdwardMSmith··on Ugandan government blocks Google Play Store, Apple App Store, and YouTube
This is horrible:

EdwardMSmith··on Ask HN: Simplest way to add paid subscription plan to my webapp?
I’ve never used it, but something like https://www.memberstack.io/ does what you’re looking for.
EdwardMSmith··on Build tools around workflows, not workflows around tools
The Internet Shopping Network launched before Amazon, but I doubt they wouldn't probably have considered licensing any of their platform.
EdwardMSmith··on Ask HN: Films that made you see the world differently?
If you have a library card, your local library may provide free access to Kanopy, which has Ikiru, as well as a couple other Kurosawa and Jarmusch films.
EdwardMSmith··on Ask HN: Alternate VCs?
More accelerator than just pure funding, but https://tinyseed.com/
EdwardMSmith··on Ask HN: Any Zapier Alternative to Automate Twitter?
Out of curiosity, what is the limiting factor of the free tier on Zapier for you? You need more that 100 runs per month, or you need multi-step workflows?

Perhaps https://www.integromat.com/en/ would work for you.

EdwardMSmith··on Feathers 4: A framework for Real-Time apps and REST APIs
This is "Web realtime" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real-time_web) not real real-time.
EdwardMSmith··on Minnesota Will Pay Residents to Grow Bee-Friendly Lawns
Zone 5 from what I can find. Would not survive in MN.
EdwardMSmith··on Ask HN: What's a cool old/vintage computer to buy?
As far as home computers - Amiga (any one, really)

For crazy fun, deskside SGI Onyx RE2.

EdwardMSmith··on A Swiss Dress from the 16th Century (2015)
Cool, just installed Ublock Origin on my iPhone. Seems to work perfect. Thanks for the advice!
EdwardMSmith··on A Swiss Dress from the 16th Century (2015)
I should have been more explicit. The ads redirect to a new page and continue to redirect when you hit the back button, making reading the site impossible unless you manage to tap “reader mode” in the ~1s before the ads kick in.
EdwardMSmith··on A Swiss Dress from the 16th Century (2015)
Site is ad hell on an iPhone.
EdwardMSmith··on GM is ending production of the Chevy Volt
Yes, I suspect the dropping of the Volt is more about no longer having a platform to build that specific model on.

I haven't dug into the news, but I'd be surprised if we've seen the end of the Voltec hybrid powertrain - we'll probably just see it in cute-utes.

EdwardMSmith··on US utilities have finally realized electric cars may save them
When I had upgraded service run to my 1923 house, I ran 200 amps to the detached garage and 200 amps to the house. The extra cost vs a smaller service is marginal.
EdwardMSmith··on 7,000 varieties of apples and the 18 you actually need to know about
Might still be a Minnesota / Midwest exclusive. It’s another University of Minnesota varietal.
EdwardMSmith··on 7,000 varieties of apples and the 18 you actually need to know about
I agree - honeycrisp are just not the same as they were.

Have you tried zestar? It is patent encumbered like honeycrisp use to be, but quite nice! Like the honeycrisp of old.

EdwardMSmith··on How and why we moved to Vue.js
If you’re not sure of the “why” of react, I’ve found that Pete Hunt’s talk “Rethinking Best Practices” gives a great overview of the reasoning behind react. Especially from about 15:15.

EdwardMSmith··on Bayangtoys X16: Inexpensive, durable, hackable GPS drone
If you're interested in a quad loaded with open source software right out of the box, take a look at the Sky Viper v2450 GPS. It runs about $150.

It runs full ardupilot code, has a ublox gps chip, a taoglas gps antenna, and the video board and transmitter software is open source.

It runs a tiny webserver that allows you to configure any of the ardupilot variables, and is compatible with most of the ardupilot ground control software.

EdwardMSmith··on Ask HN: What was your first computer?
Sinclair ZX-80 with ZX-81 ROM - Dad got the kit and put it together for us.

Then an original IBM PC (5150) as Dad was an IBMer.

First computer I purchased myself was a Mac SE30 for Mathematica.

Got the Imagewriter printer with it, which I later traded straight up for an Amiga 500. Best deal I ever made.

EdwardMSmith··on Startups should not use React
An IP lawyer has: https://medium.com/@dwalsh.sdlr/react-facebook-and-the-revok...
EdwardMSmith··on Startups should not use React
It is EXACTLY the point, as the only thing that gets revoked is the patent grant - not the software license.
EdwardMSmith··on React, Facebook, and the Revokable Patent License. Why It’s a Paper Tiger.
A suppose, but the point of the analysis is that one edge of the sword is pretty dull.

The point being that even in the extremely, vastly unlikely case that things would progress to an actual patent infringement suit that you lose, in the end, it may not matter, based on:

And even if Facebook could assert a valid patent protecting React, the damages are very speculative. I cannot find a case awarding a judgement for infringing a patent otherwise licensed through open source, but it’s not a case I’d want to file. “Hey Juror #2, please award my client Facebook money because we pulled a patent license that’s otherwise granted to millions of other people free of charge.”

EdwardMSmith··on America’s Cars Are Getting Faster and More Efficient
The e28 M5 is more comparable to a 1 series now.

The e28 has a shorter wheelbase than the 1 series sedan (but is longer overall due to its stylish 80's big overhangs...) It is also narrower than the 1 series.

EdwardMSmith··on The Awful Reign of the Red Delicious (2014)
The patent and the royalty on Honeycrisp expired in 2008.
