EdiX··on Most data centers refusing to say how much water, electricity they use
Imagine fretting about water and electricity usage in europe, where we'll never ever have a datacenter build-up because electricity prices are too high anyway.
EdiX··on Most data centers refusing to say how much water, electricity they use
Didn't you know? Once you heat up water that's it, you can't use that water ever again. It's even worse if you make it evaporate, not just useless but GONE.
EdiX··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
Yemen, one of the poorest countries on earth, closed an important EU trade route for over a year and we couldn't fix it. Defending your land vs protecting your trade interests are different things.
EdiX··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
Brussels too. There's some US cities that seem to be exceptionally bad, in a league of their own, but that's probably still a small fraction of all the homeless.

If we did mind a world were global trade was unreliable we have a military to match that concern, but we don't. The Houthi close the red sea for years and we can't do anything about it. Iran, attacked by the US, retaliates against us by closing the strait of Hormutz and we sit in the monitoring chair.

It is what it is.

> The first time I went to the US as a teenager, I was surprised

How many years ago was this? Because over the past 20 years things have gotten better in the US and worse in EU, steadily.

EdiX··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
Apparently well enough that we copied them in europe too. There's now a 3 euro tariff on every package imported from outside the EU.
EdiX··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
There's no point in answering this question, either you get it or you don't. If you get it you get it. If you don't it's because the way you want to use your desktop fits exactly into the design decisions of GNOME and you can't even imagine somebody wanting different features. It can't even be chalked up to an extreme lack of imagination because there is a plethora of desktop environments that do things differently from GNOME that you could look up to figure out why one might think GNOME is bad.
EdiX··on Normalized Fascism in Open Source: $12M Given to DHH
This is a very dishonest post but it doesn't matter "there is no room for debate or argument, here" this is not a post aiming to convince anyone who might disagree, it's about rallying the troops.
EdiX··on Being kicked out of the tech industry
My advice is: delete the blog, all of it. It's nothing but a list of red flags.

I want to go to work, cooperate with mature adults, make a paycheck and go back home. I don't want to have to help my colleagues through their mental health crises, I don't want them to cause a ruckus and I don't want to be recruited by them into a marxist revolution.

Every post exudes histrionism, grandeur, chuuni.

"I'm not capable of being a respectable Negro" I don't even know what that means, how about being a respectable person? I see your website and think "probably not".

EdiX··on Field measurements of neighborhood-scale air temperature impacts of data centers
Do most people buy their airplane tickets at a physical travel agent? Do they do most of their shopping at physical stores? Do they send paper mail instead of email or messages? Do they worry about buying from assembly lines that are least mechanized? Do they buy a car or take a horse carriage?

It isn't about hurting others, it's about convenience and price.

They don't want them to replace their job, they want them to replace other peoples jobs.
EdiX··on Field measurements of neighborhood-scale air temperature impacts of data centers
There's a certain group of people (the kind of people who used to spend a lot of time on twitter and now spend a lot of time on bluesky) that's convinced that their environmental activism is what defeated NFT and are trying to repeat that to defeat AI because it's the same "tech bros we hate".

EdiX··on Go 1.27 Interactive Tour
Generics themselves maybe not. Generic methods probably yes. What people want generic methods for is to do deeply nested call chains that were never typical of Go. And if you have deeply nested calls you'll need some way to deal with errors in deeply nested calls, and then a short function syntax to pass to behavior inside those deeply nested calls. Give it a few years and everyone will be writing the same functional slop in Go that they are writing in every other language.

> Not a lawyer, but additionally there's also legal concern about the legality of the training source

That's not how copyright works. If you use a pirated copy of photoshop the resulting image is not illegal.

EdiX··on EU to legislate about Chat Control behind closed doors
"Cookie banners are malicious compliance" is starting to wear thin as an excuse. GDPR went into law in 2018, almost ten years ago and for almost as long websites have been "maliciously complying". If you don't don anything about it at some point it's not malicious anymore, it's just how the law is meant to be interpreted.

I have a different hypothesis for why the GDPR exists: it is to create a market for EU based compliance companies.

> Immigration will be vital to the survival of Europe. We are far below replacement level birth rates and we'll need new young people to keep our societies functioning

Third world immigration actually makes things worse in two ways. The first one is that we have recently discovered that third world immigrants are net negative economically across their lifetime due to social security. The second one is that they all move to the big cities exacerbating the sponge city problem and its effects on fertility.

> But we can't just let Europe die out because of some sense of racial superiority.

What we are actually doing is we are letting europe die out of a sense of moral superiority, that we can do away with nasty (hydrocarbons) or scary (nuclear) sources of energy, that we must take in every third worlder because letting them live in the thrid world is a crime, that AI must be regulated to death because it enriches billionaries and "technofascists", etc etc

It reminds me of that scene in the ninth gate, we are going bankrupt in the way former nobility goes bankrupt.

EdiX··on Digital Sovereignty Becomes an Imperative as the US Reads Dutch Emails
The point of all this free trade ideology is that it would make the whole world into peaceful liberal democracies. If it doesn't do that, why are we doing it? We're just making ourselves dependent on dangerous dicators while simultaneously enriching them.
EdiX··on Digital Sovereignty Becomes an Imperative as the US Reads Dutch Emails
Free trade didn't stop Russia from invading Ukraine and it didn't convert China into a democracy. And the india's deal is saddling us with more third world immigration that will only make things worse.

It seems to me that this is still all the EU not keeping up with where the world is going. We started drafting the mercosur agreement 27 years ago so we finalize it and call it a victory, all that it's probably going to do is precipitate the demise of our domestic agribusiness, so that farmers won't be able to cause a ruckus in Brussels anymore.

EdiX··on Digital Sovereignty Becomes an Imperative as the US Reads Dutch Emails
We've known this since the Snowden leaks 13 years ago. In a couple of years there will probably be a president in the US that will be more palatable for the european political class and we'll all be able to go back to pretending this doesn't happen.

After all the EU is too compromised energetically, militarily, industrially, burocratically and democratically to ever achieve independence. Talking about digital sovereignty as we ban construction of new datacenter is just too cute. This is all just political theater as we peacefully sunset into a museum continent.

EdiX··on xAI is looking more like a datacentre REIT than a frontier lab
Here's my theory about the dotcom bubble. The market correctly identified the internet as hugely valuable and correctly identified search engines as being able to capture a large share of this value. Consequently early search engines, chiefly Yahoo!, obtained (merited) high valuations. What Yahoo! did with their stock (they IPOd in 1996) was go on a big startup buying spree. This is what actually started the bubble: invest in some random dotcom crap company in the hopes that Yahoo! swoops in, buys and you get a big payday.

What caused the crash was Yahoo! being unable to do anything with their acquisitions and Google coming out with a better search engine, undermining Yahoo!'s core product. Google basically pulled the rug from under the dot com bubble.

The situation we're in now with LLMs is different, if I'm right we're actually pre-bubble, the bubble hasn't even started yet.

EdiX··on Artificial intelligence is not conscious – Ted Chiang
I was hoping for something more insightful from Ted Chiang than just regurgitating the usual "it's just predicting the next token that's not consciousness". Maybe the topic of consciousness is just too ill-defined and vacuous to say anything intelligent about it.

Or maybe man is the product of his social circle and all his white collar and artist friends being anxious about AI is preventing him from thinking about this at all. Maybe we should ask if Claude can be conscious without a friend circle judging him behind his back.
