EddieJLSH··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (August 2023)
You should charge more! That is low enough it's in the "Why so cheap?" range which may even hurt your chances of finding work than being too expensive! If you have any work experience at all, double or triple that rate.
EddieJLSH··on Emacs 29.1
VSCode is not a fad - it has huge support from Microsoft, is the most popular code editor by far, and is a very good tool that's beginner friendly and allows for customisation. It is already almost a decade old. Visual Studio has been around since 1997 so there's a good chance VSCode will be around for a good few years too.
EddieJLSH··on How to check if two SQL tables are the same
Good point, have not used it before but looks like you have to add a unique ID if you want one
EddieJLSH··on How to check if two SQL tables are the same
Realistically which production DB tables don't have a unique id? Genuine question, never used one in my life.
EddieJLSH··on Ask HN: Is the market bad, or am I having the worst luck job hunting?
Thanks, got it! :)
EddieJLSH··on Ask HN: Is the market bad, or am I having the worst luck job hunting?
A rejection screamed in your ear? Luxury! When I was a junior developer we used to stand in job line 25 hours a day for tuppence and if they didn't hire us we'd be shot.
EddieJLSH··on Ask HN: Is the market bad, or am I having the worst luck job hunting?
The market is pretty horrible right now, in my experience. Speak to a recruiter and it should be a little easier to find something. I used to have roughly 1/2 of applications leading to interviews and around 3/4 of those leading to offers but this year had a 20 application dry streak. I think the market is pretty flooded with good talent from the large tech companies layoffs and the number of people going through bootcamps for junior positions too.

Hoping to get an offer in my final interview for a role in 10 minutes!

EddieJLSH··on This is valid Python syntax
Fun syntax gotcha that I saw recently was a YAML MAC address that were all numbers like 11:22:33:11 which Python was parsing as a sexagesimal number so some libraries were throwing type errors
EddieJLSH··on Csexp: S-Expressions over the Network
What's the realistic issue with code injection over HTTPS TCP parsing into expected messages? If it is an issue for your system, can't you try read into some expected shape and throw an error if it doesn't parse to circumvent that?
EddieJLSH··on Csexp: S-Expressions over the Network
Yeah that was my understanding, I've considered using this before (sending objects over the wire and eval'ing them) but never implemented it. Lisp seems very good for this sort of stuff.
EddieJLSH··on Ask HN: How much would you pay per test case?
This is a no-code platform - teams still have to write the tests (which is no-code so... god knows how that is with regards to flakey tests or refactors). So $5 * hours of work effort per month. $25 for manual testing is still far cheaper than I assumed tbh, but I guess this is outsourced to very low cost of living places. Interesting data point though.
EddieJLSH··on Ask HN: How much would you pay per test case?
Thanks!

Yeah I think I can undercut the cost of a dedicated team because the number of tests that are similar between companies are quite high - I've contracted across multiple startups as a test engineer and seen this time and time again. If I can template these smart enough I can quickly boilerplate the tests & then add the more specific domain logic they might have.

Plus there are teams out there still using no-code automation tools which are flakey, so writing these in a non-flakey way (and validating it is a true bug before reporting so clients only get valid bugs) should help prove it's a better service too.
