EamonnMR··on How the iMac Saved Apple
The tray loaders are in fact easier to replace than the slot loaders. But you can find working slot loader drives too.
EamonnMR··on How the iMac Saved Apple
Much of my earliest experience with computing was on these, because they had them at school. Hyperstudio was my first taste of building little interactive applications. EV Override was the first game that felt like it contained an entire world. It was sad to see them eventually treated as junk - I have one myself that I pulled out of an e-waste container a few years back.
EamonnMR··on The Dream Was Universal Access to Knowledge. The Result Was a Fiasco
I'm still trying to wrap my head around why IA would do something like this.
EamonnMR··on UMG, Sony, Capitol File Copyright Lawsuit Against Internet Archive
Why is the Internet archive choosing these battles?
EamonnMR··on Kafka is dead, long live Kafka
Have you considered making a plain HTTPS frontend like Confluent's REST proxy? Or even just designating a bucket as 'incoming messages' and letting people use the S3 API to write messages?

Kafka is great but if you're targeting Amazon customers, you're competing with SQS too.

EamonnMR··on Kafka is dead, long live Kafka
That would be a killer feature. Once we switched to MSK back at a previous gig, our biggest care and feeding task was adding new event types to our kafka-to-redshift ETL thing. Well, that and dealing with scaling our http wrapper...
EamonnMR··on FCC fines robocaller a record $300M after blocking billions of their scam calls
Most of them get a "scam likely" flag these days though.
EamonnMR··on Free Public WiFi
For what it's worth, I found this post via my RSS reader.
EamonnMR··on Man found guilty of child porn because he ran a Tor exit node
Yeah Cyberpunk wasn't so much a dream as a dystopian reaction to modern life; instead of exploring space, people do crimes to scrape by. I certainly wouldn't want to live in Snow Crash or Neuromancer...
EamonnMR··on Ask HN: Why do web sites not place the cursor for input?
Blowing away the form on submission is the worst sin if form design. Only blow it away if it was accepted!

I wonder if this is a deliberate (legal) submission reduction technique.

EamonnMR··on Lazydocker: a lazier way to manage everything Docker
It lets you quickly tab back and forth between different containers and keeps everything on one screen. You could accomplish the same thing by fiddling in tmux, but this has it all ready to go in one command.
EamonnMR··on Ask HN: Anyone else notice that HN isn’t full of JavaScript frameworks lately?
Compared to what we had before, react is pretty nice.
EamonnMR··on Lazydocker: a lazier way to manage everything Docker
Lazydocker is really nice, used this a lot.
EamonnMR··on The Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus
Our librarian used this site in a class about media literacy, with the lesson being that you can't believe everything you read on the internet. I guess it was a good lesson because I still remember it.
EamonnMR··on Pulling my site from Google over AI training
The layout on this linked site: https://vasilis.nl/nerd/how-to-disagree-with-googles-privacy...

Is incredible.

EamonnMR··on xAI
I wonder if the 'true nature of the universe' refers to the simulation hypothesis? There's a belief in some circles that a sufficiently powerful AGI would be able to 'hack the simulation.'
EamonnMR··on Lifers, Dayjobbers, and the Independently Wealthy: A Letter to a Former Student
The indie developer from two weeks ago[1] needed to hear this.

EamonnMR··on The 90s Developer Starter Pack
There's a part that tries to recreate it: https://www.retrokits.de/index.php/hdd-clicker-hdd-sound-sim...
EamonnMR··on If PEP 703 is accepted, Meta can commit three engineer-years to no-GIL CPython
It's probably going to be

EamonnMR··on The Darwinian argument for worrying about AI
I was unaware of the literature on different misfolds able to replicate their own specific misfolds.
EamonnMR··on Introducing Superalignment
> Most people aren't particularly good drivers. Indeed the vast majority of lethal accidents (the statistics are quite brutal for this) are caused by people driving poorly and could be close to 100% preventable with a properly engineered FSD system

I'm gonna take issue with this. A properly engineered FSD system will refuse to proceed into a dangerous situation where a human driver will often push their luck. Would a full self driving car just... decline to drive you somewhere if the conditions were unsafe? Would this be acceptable to customers? Similar story for driving over the speed limit.

EamonnMR··on The Darwinian argument for worrying about AI
Are you sure they undergo evolution, and aren't just a self-spreading phenomenon like Fire?
EamonnMR··on The Darwinian argument for worrying about AI
TIME must have gotten a lot of clicks off of their Yudkowsky op ed. As always the answer isn't 'cool, let's regulate AI to limit its profitability, thus limiting AI development' but rather 'we should keep throwing money at it, just making sure we throw money at the right particular people.' Yudkowsky didn't want to bomb all data centers, just the ones that wouldn't comply with his regime. Similarly:

"We need research on AI safety to progress as quickly as research on improving AI capabilities. There aren’t many market incentives for this, so governments should offer robust funding as soon as possible."

I'm reminded of the tech ceo caricature in Don't Look Up who, when presented with an incoming asteroid ready to wipe out the earth, hatches a plan to profit from it.

EamonnMR··on Making Games
Outside of a few niche genres, the expectations have scaled faster than the tech has, compensated by scaling up team sizes.
EamonnMR··on Now Reddit are coming for the individual personal subreddits
I made and later closed a tiny sub before this whole kerfuffle. I haven't received any flack from Reddit yet.
EamonnMR··on Missing Titanic sub faced lawsuit over depths it could safely travel to
I wonder if the NTSB will do a report on this.
EamonnMR··on Rock engravings made by Homo Naledi ~300k years ago
Now I'm picturing two cave dwelling fellows in front of a fire knapping flint and shooting the shit, and one goes "hold on, what about cave paintings... as a service!"
EamonnMR··on Function calling and other API updates
I believe it's called moving fast and breaking things.
EamonnMR··on Reddit Doubles Down
You can buy reddit stock when they IPO I suppose.
EamonnMR··on Miniature Macintosh with Raspberry Pi
I'd be super interested in a G3. Much more finishing work I'd imagine, but may what a great case design.
