ENGNR··on Microsoft for Startups now capped to $5k without an investor affiliation
This was our experience too. I don’t know how Microsoft gets anything done, their systems were just buggy, poorly documented chaos for us.

We had a boat load of credits, an existing codebase/system we were just trying to move from AWS, and even tried to use their “expert mentor” service or whatever it was called. Their expert had zero knowledge and was immediately clear that they were worse at reading their own docs than us.

Never trying Azure again, and I’d like my wasted hours back please.

ENGNR··on Waymo's market share in San Francisco exceeds Lyft's
As a non US resident - not having to think about tipping the driver makes me excited and significantly more likely to visit. Tipping culture is just exhausting!

If someone could automate wheeling the food a few dozen metres from a restaurant kitchen to a table next it would be perfect :)

ENGNR··on From OpenAPI spec to MCP: How we built Xata's MCP server
Agreed, I’ve only implemented one endpoint, but even on that the amount of data coming back was too high, and the json shape ate up context

I think MCP responses will be high level, aggregated, sorted, etc. Also strongly considering YAML over JSON

ENGNR··on Wyze pays $255k of tariffs on $167k of floodlights
Was super interesting.

I of course feel for them as a small business. They took risk and did the numbers and are trying to bring something great to their customers.

One angle I didn’t see covered in response… dropping the quality on the product. If America just isn’t there yet on manufacturing, and people still only want to pay $139 for a computer case… surely someone in America can sell the customer a box of some sort for $139. It might be pretty crap, but there’s already local industry selling trailers and park benches and other things made out of metal. A barebones steel case seems within reach for $139, and they can improve from there.

ENGNR··on Apple violated antitrust ruling, judge finds
So they should probably just scrap the 30% fee. At the very least scrap it if the user was linked directly to the app. And just make the also huge commission on the payments.
ENGNR··on Apple and Meta fined millions for breaching EU law
Would looove to distribute an app without it having to be in the App Store, and not paying the App Store fee (direct download of signed binary). Happy to pay a yearly fee or fee per update to cover code review if it’s crucial. But 30% of revenue for doing bugger all… cmon, they’re squeezing the lemon a bit too hard.
ENGNR··on The path to open-sourcing the DeepSeek inference engine
Plus, it's probably going to leak anyway. If it's really just an idea, and you need to hire humans to work on it who will move in and out or your org.

Might as well get some dubious medium term gain rather than spend a bunch of money on security for nothing.

ENGNR··on Google is winning on every AI front
The one thing they lack that OpenAI has is… product focus. There’s some kind of management issue that makes Google all over the shop, cancelling products for no reason. Whereas Sam Altmans team is right on the money.

Google is catching up fast on product though.

ENGNR··on Bond rout starting to sound market alarm bells
Possibly true.

China has had net positive tariffs against the USA for decades though. Obama tried to use the WTO to label them as a currency manipulator. Trump tried some tariffs the first time around but they just raised theirs higher to keep the imbalance.

Not saying the current strategy is a good one. But America has lost the entire supply chain, racked up huge debts, and a dollar that encourages more and more consumption. Doesn't something have to happen eventually, before the problem gets worse?

ENGNR··on Bond rout starting to sound market alarm bells
The absolute lower bound is probably domestic consumption?

Which is still a huuuuuuuuuuuuge market

ENGNR··on The role of developer skills in agentic coding
The opposite of vibe coding, when the agent craps out and you just do it manually = Artisanal coding. Yeah I can get on board with that.
ENGNR··on Ask HN: How do I escape homelessness after rebuilding my mental health?
You don't have to jointly agree though. If one person is just burned out being a middle manager at a tech company, they can choose to quit and move over to being a construction site traffic controller (holding road signs), for half the pay but a huge boost in happiness. Their partner might not like it, but they're not going to jail over it.

But then they get separated - you no longer have that choice, or you go to jail. It seems orwellian.

ENGNR··on Ask HN: How do I escape homelessness after rebuilding my mental health?
Is this reasonable though? Going from one household to two households raises expenses. People also just go through bad times, mental troubles, skills atrophy. Even just not seeing your kids might make someone lose the will to get up early and give it all they’ve got for another decade.

Is it really fair that previously they got to work hard to buy their kid nice things, but now they must work hard to buy them nice things or go to jail?

ENGNR··on Fire the Contractors: Paradoxically adding government employees reduces costs
This article assumes that the services themselves won’t be cut, so they’ll have to use more contractors.

I think the point is that they’ll cut the services and contractors too. I’ve worked with government quite a bit at various levels and the level of messing around, pointless ideas and internal politics is astounding, as well as the lack of accountability and oversight in general.

The opinion I walked away with is that just like twitter, chunks of it could be cut away or properly digitised without affecting what people on the outside perceive or care about at all.

ENGNR··on Meta in Talks to Reincorporate in Texas or Another State, Exit Delaware
He was literally sleeping at the factory, doing everything he can to get Tesla to be outselling Toyota Corolla, which was considered absolutely insane. It’s still an insane goal.
ENGNR··on Apple opposes investor calls to end its DEI efforts
You should blow the whistle, because that’s illegal. And leave the rest of us who are nowhere near that to live a regular life without having to enforce sexist/racist policies.
ENGNR··on Apple opposes investor calls to end its DEI efforts
It’s bullshit. It means more interviews for people they know they won’t hire to meet a quota which wastes their time, and when someone from a minority is hired the perception might be that they weren’t actually qualified, even if they were.

Plus as a straight white guy - am I really so bad? The world seems pretty fair. I’ve never done anything sexist or racist in the workplace (quite the opposite) and haven’t even seen it happen. Why do I have to have it worse off every step of the way just because I was born this way. End the BS and let’s get some work done.

ENGNR··on Stimulation Clicker
There’s some pretty funny commentary in there mixed into the absurd overstimulation
ENGNR··on Elon Musk wanted an OpenAI for-profit
I don’t know how deeply they analysed it, but Kurzgesagt seem to think the Martian moons have particular value as central gravity wells, to then reach further out to mine asteroids

ENGNR··on Nightclub stickers over smartphone rule divides the dancefloor
I'm guessing security would see you filming and come for a chat. Probably other patrons too, if that's the culture of the venue.
ENGNR··on React 19
Really glad they delayed the release to (hopefully) solve the parallel suspense issue. Haven’t tried it yet but high hopes, and great release overall.
ENGNR··on Australian Parliament bans social media for under-16s
And now they’ll be able to see the groups you go to within pages, read comments, see what we write, etc etc. It also goes from being a defence capability to used for all sorts of things and eventually leaked.

It’s not bad enough to leave, better to engage with the politics and try to get some rights before it spreads further outwards

ENGNR··on Australian Parliament bans social media for under-16s
We’re a nanny state, the government is just going to use it to track us
ENGNR··on DOJ proposal would require Google to divest from AI partnerships with Anthropic
You can determine if a search result is effective for that query if a user stops searching after clicking the link. But only if you have enough users for any given query.

Also ad networks

ENGNR··on OpenAI hits pause on video model Sora after artists leak access in protest
I’m guessing they gave feedback and felt that it was ignored. So rather than let the trial end and let OpenAI say “we even ran it past a bunch of artists, there’s no problem here” - someone decided to flip the table, since they were unheard anyway and felt there were unresolved issues
ENGNR··on DOJ will push Google to sell off Chrome
Don't be evil was only the wifi password
ENGNR··on Microsoft and OpenAI's close partnership shows signs of fraying
El Reg got the story: https://www.theregister.com/2024/05/20/slack_ts_and_cs_updat...

They blamed it on a 'misunderstanding' in the end

ENGNR··on GitHub cuts AI deals with Google, Anthropic
I think a lot of the criticism is constructive. Many of the limitations won’t just magically go away - we’ll have to build tooling and processes and adjust our way of thinking to get there. Most devs will jump across to anything useful the second it’s ready, I would think
ENGNR··on Show HN: Decentralized Twitter clone built on Ethereum blockchain
This is cool!

Also glad to see things built with Ethereum getting air time on HN. I reckon now that they’ve expanded transaction volume and brought the fees right down, we’ll see more and more cool applications/toys start to pop up over the next couple of years. Rather than just speculative financial products and scams.

ENGNR··on Microsoft and OpenAI's close partnership shows signs of fraying
Slack tried it but the backlash got them, this time anyway.
