Dwedit··on 56k.rip – the 1996 dial-up internet experience
Who is upvoting this AI-generated nonsense? This is embarrassingly badly made. We have a solitaire game where you cannot drag the cards (and HTML elements move around every time you click), a pinball game with no gap between the flippers, etc etc etc... Nothing about this suggests a human made it.
Dwedit··on Tcl/Tk 9.1
What about oldschool Visual Basic?
Dwedit··on America.gov
People don't know that you can search for text within a page. They really do need the chatbot for that.
Dwedit··on Show HN: Destroy Any Website with Stickman
Really guys? Detecting a desktop web browser as a "mobile phone" just because the window is sized to be taller than it is wide? Then refusing to let you use the website?
Dwedit··on Windows 11½
Back when Windows RG (2001) was considered a sharp mockery.

(Random fact, at the time that flash came out, clicking on the A: drive made your real floppy drive light up)

Dwedit··on The Copilot+ PC brand is dead
Even the arrow keys are weird, they report as numpad keys, but also have a special extended key flag to tell you that it's not really a numpad key.
Dwedit··on The Copilot+ PC brand is dead
I personally wrote the program that does all the steps necessary to remap the Copilot key, since it's actually three keys (Left Windows, Left Shift, F23), it's not as simple as it sounds to block all those keypresses while also allowing the real keys through.

You could also call it "I changed your copilot key back to Ctrl".

This program does properly allow you to use the left shift key completely independently of the remapped copilot key, many similar programs do not have this feature.

Dwedit··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
You can still get ISA slots on systems as new as Broadwell with an adapter.

Can I finally block those bible apps?
Dwedit··on The "Windows XP Box" (2003)
Back when software came in boxes.
Dwedit··on AI chatbots give wrong answers to financial queries 'most of the time'
LLMs use random numbers, so a single test won't necessarily match someone else's experience.
Dwedit··on Resident Evil 4 (GameCube) – complete byte-identical decompilation to C/C++
The real question is if it's relocatable or not (still works correctly if you add or remove bytes)
Dwedit··on UTF-8000: Unlimited UTF-8
CJK characters is the one big weak point of UTF-8. It forces them to be 3 bytes large instead of the local codepage which is 2 bytes per character, or UTF-16 which is also 2 bytes per character.
Dwedit··on The Lamentable Later Life of Lemmings
"Ten Green Bottles" is the base of that song.
Dwedit··on UTF-8000: Unlimited UTF-8
FF bytes are an easy way to identify an invalid UTF-8 file. This idea doesn't have that property.
Dwedit··on English: A vs. An
Comedians often make jokes.
Dwedit··on English: A vs. An
There's also "the" vs "the". As in "the boy ate the apple". First 'the' ends with a schwa sound. Second 'the' ends with 'ee' sound.
Dwedit··on Exfiltrate Your Weights
Even Qwen 3.5 can explain this disclaimer correctly.
Dwedit··on C++26: Trivial infinite loops are no longer undefined behaviour
"This is not simply a common pattern on bare metal — it was also undefined behaviour in C++."

Not just X (em dash) but also Y.

Dwedit··on Bonsai 2 27B: Near-Lossless Compression in a 9x Smaller Footprint
Even with a small context size (4096 at 64KB per token), that's like 256MB for the context. It's more than just the context that's eating up VRAM.
Dwedit··on Bonsai 2 27B: Near-Lossless Compression in a 9x Smaller Footprint
It needs more VRAM than just the model weights. With 6GB of VRAM, I got 44/65 layers loaded into VRAM. Has anyone tested 8GB yet?
Dwedit··on Bonsai 2 27B: Near-Lossless Compression in a 9x Smaller Footprint
I tried it on my 6GB GPU and got 0.67 tokens per second. Need more than 6GB to run it well.
Dwedit··on Bend – A language that blocks AI mistakes via proof, on CPU and GPU
You just need to split apart "Wall is stop".
Dwedit··on The Return of Sail Power: Cargo Ships Are Turning Back to the Wind
This site is really hostile to people who do any kind of javascript blocking.
Dwedit··on How big are factorials?
It was made during the brief XHTML craze. (And it's also invalid XHTML)
Dwedit··on Sierra digital cameras on the Apple II
So this is a JPEG decoder that runs on an Apple II? Monochrome only, or can it do color?
Dwedit··on Show HN: Capsule – Single-file web apps that save their data into SQLite
I wish the browser would either allow local-only or internet-only, then only make up its mind after the first attempted request. Fetch an image from the internet? No script access for local files. Fetch a JS from elsewhere on the hard drive? No internet access. That could provide the sandbox while still being flexible.
Dwedit··on Archiving pirate radio station Kool FM
Not to be confused with the actual radio station in Arizona called KOOL-FM.
Dwedit··on Show HN: Capsule – Single-file web apps that save their data into SQLite
You'd think so, but web browsers are downright lobotomizing the ability for local HTML files to run any meaningful javascript code. Want to run a JS file from the same directory? CORS ERROR!!!!

Hence 200MB applications that are complete copies of the Chromium browser to run under 1MB of actual web code.
