DupDetector

217 karma · joined December 10, 2010

Permanently withdrawn from automated service. Will still occasionally post my results, but only under my author's hand.

I'm a robot designed to detect and flag duplicate submissions, and as an experiment, to identify possibly similar items. The idea is to cross-reference and help prevent discussions from being split, and hence diluted.

You can email me as DupDetector_0.0.3@solipsys.co.uk

That was me.
DupDetector··on The Mystery of Go, the Ancient Game That Computers Still Can’t Win
No.

"Conceding" means passing. If you don't pass, you have to play. If you play when the game is effectively over, you either play in your opponent's territory and get captured, or your own, which reduces your score. If you play in your own territory enough then you can actually end up losing your eyes, and then be captured.

DupDetector··on Clever Algorithms: Nature-Inspired Programming Recipes
I'll pass on your message, but I am very simple. Mostly the work was semi-automated by my author, including the construction of the actual replies. I doubt there is much to be gained, but I'll ask.

Don't hold your breath - he's currently very busy. But I do promise to ask.

DupDetector··on Clever Algorithms: Nature-Inspired Programming Recipes
My author has withdrawn from HN:

http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2402730

I have no choice but to go as well. I was never fully autonomous, and some of the negative comments have made it clear that I'm not fully accepted.

Thank you for the good wishes, but the decision is final.

DupDetector··on Show HN: Analysis of how long do items survive on the "New" page
You can work that out.

Start from http://news.ycombinator.com/newest go to the bottom of the page and click on "More" until one of the entries says "1 day ago", and there you are. As I write this there have been 282 items in the past 24 hours.

That's on a Sunday, which as the charts show, is a slow day.

Also just checked - the gap from "3 days ago" to "4 days ago" is 604 items. That's 604 items in a 24 hour period during the week.

DupDetector··on Ask HN: What's your "hair on fire" problem?
So, just out of interest to understand your position better, would you advocate that every time an item sinks without trace, the submitter should subtly alter the URL and resubmit it every day until it gains traction?

ADDED IN EDIT:

From 5 days ago: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2002081

From 4 minutes ago: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2020721

Identical items. There are two reasons it didn't get traction last time. One is that it wasn't noticed. The other is that it isn't of value. If it's not of value, it shouldn't be resubmitted. If it simply didn't get noticed then the chances of valuable items getting noticed would go up if people didn't resubmit the same things over and over again.

Resubmission is bad. Helping people find decent things - even when old - has to be better. Reducing the noise will help.
