DrawTR··on Ubuntu 26.04 Ends 46 Years of Silent sudo Passwords
They mean to have a static single character on the screen and have it change with every keypress. For example, you type "a" and it shows /. You type "b" and it shows "|", etc.
DrawTR··on Don't post generated/AI-edited comments. HN is for conversation between humans
Seems to be an accidental dangling s at the end of the comment. Try this?

DrawTR··on Welcome (back) to Macintosh
Every time I see a comment on the state of Tahoe I look wearily at my current install of Sequoia. I'll have to update at some point. But I'll hold out as long as I can...
DrawTR··on Personal thoughts/notes from working on Zootopia 2
I liked the film.
DrawTR··on How uv got so fast
Editing the post to switch five "it's X not Y"s[1] is pretty disappointing. I wish people were more clear with their disclosure of LLM editing.

DrawTR··on Precise geolocation via Wi-Fi Positioning System
I see, thanks. I've definitely seen instances where an AP is broadcasting multiple SSIDs with different BSSIDs. I suppose I just thought nothing of it... but that makes sense.
DrawTR··on Precise geolocation via Wi-Fi Positioning System
Do most consumer APs/routers allow you to just change the MAC address on the fly? I don't think the ones I've owned have ever allowed that. But that would certainly be interesting to try (if you were somewhere without any other address interference that would tip it off)
DrawTR··on Precise geolocation via Wi-Fi Positioning System
The SSID (name, like the article mentions) is different than the bSSID (mac address of the access point), so I don't think it would be that easy to spoof.
DrawTR··on I invited strangers to message me through a receipt printer
I've wanted to make a project w/ a receipt printer for a little bit now. Does anyone have any good suggestions for printer models?
DrawTR··on I accidentally became PureGym’s unofficial Apple Wallet developer
I don't like the baseless LLM accusations, but the code comment

> // Device wants updates! Store that push token like it's bitcoin in 2010

...really had me raising my eyebrows. Along with the mixed em-dash and hyphens and the AI generated images on the page.

DrawTR··on The Rise of the Japanese Toilet
I sure hope a few wipes with a paper towel is not good enough for most people who get feces on their hands
DrawTR··on Busy Bar
don't people typically say to let thoughts pass by when you're doing meditation? seems like bitter medicine to disallow yourself any fleeting thought
DrawTR··on The booming, high-stakes arms race of airline safety videos
Wow, that video is way over the top. It's almost creepy that, as the in-video flight attendant is explaining the safety of the seat buckle, the camera is actively panning away from her to focus on the motion of the ball
DrawTR··on My Struggle with Doom Scrolling
yup. it basically becomes a ulysses pact with myself to attempt to make it so i can't just undo the restrictions i set up. what good are the blocking attempts if you can disable them when you get bored? you have to set them up with the intention and foresight that you will try to disable them
DrawTR··on Forgejo: A self-hosted lightweight software forge
can anyone share what the benefit is over using a self hosted repository host over a service like github/gitlab? obviously you get more power over the interface & such but are there truly any gains over using the larger platforms?
DrawTR··on Show HN: Map of YC Startups
Apparently inspired by a comment on this very post! (Above yours, right now.)

> Cool project, but missed opportunity to name the arbitrary dimensions Y and C...

DrawTR··on School smartphone ban results in better sleep and improved mood: study
For what it's worth, the product demands $50 for what is essentially a < $1.00 3D printed case and a < $1.00 NFC tag. You could probably (not endorsing it!) find the NFC code online and just dump it to a tag of your own.
DrawTR··on Google’s AI thinks I left a Gatorade bottle on the moon
ahaha. this is so good. they're just so earnest about every bit of praise
DrawTR··on But what is a GPT? Visual intro to Transformers [video]
There's no need for the snark there. I mean 'potential danger' as in the LLM outputting anything inconsistent with reality. That can be as simple as an arithmetic issue.
DrawTR··on But what is a GPT? Visual intro to Transformers [video]
Can this be potentially dangerous -- e.g. if a user types "The answer to the expression 2 + 2 is", isn't there a chance it chooses an output beyond the most likely one?
DrawTR··on Show HN: A platform for remote piano lessons based on the Web MIDI API
Are the demo videos supposed to show the MIDI piano lighting up at the same time as the video performance? Not seeing that on my side if so
DrawTR··on Show HN: Inko Cat – Lego Blocks to Build Your Productivity Space
Man, this is something that I really wish was open source. I've been looking for something like this for a while, but having it on someone else's servers just isn't really something I can handle
DrawTR··on A recent software update was not successful. Your vehicle cannot be driven
saying "for the tow truck operator" is horrifying language to put in a 'your car is bricked' spot
DrawTR··on Sorry, but a new prompt for GPT-4 is not a paper
Anything generative? At its core, Google doesn't 'make' anything when you query it.
DrawTR··on Frutiger Aero
I think that's half the fun of it? There's this sort of squeaky clean optimism and hopefulness to it that's just absolutely gone in today's universal design language
DrawTR··on On letting go of spite
> i don't see the author really talk about that.

The last paragraph touches on that:

> I’m now writing this in an attempt to start letting go of that spite. Just like I was during school, those teachers too were probably doing their best, and making mistakes, as we all do. Instead, I thank them for trying, I thank them for their patience. I know I derailed nearly every class and I know that many of you at least recognised the potential, and tried to get me to see what I was capable of. But the truth is, the format of traditional schooling just didn’t work for me. And I now know why. But, I found my path eventually, and continue to do so.

DrawTR··on Topic: Discord Stealer
Does having it on GitHub not inherently promote it as a sort of aggregator for stuff like it? Instead of having to search for a forum somewhere, they simply have to look at this cool GH topic, and there they now have ~40 options at their disposal
DrawTR··on Topic: Discord Stealer
Sure, but I would be willing to make the argument that the net benefit you'd get from the maybe one or two people willing to genuinely examine the project's internals is hugely outnumbered by the measurably thousands who want to ruin someone's life
DrawTR··on Topic: Discord Stealer
I mean -- I think my main point here, and to the other commenters who are saying "I'm happy that they don't take things like this down" -- is that I think the dynamic shifts a little bit when the point of the project, the explicit reason for its creation is malicious, & the entire point of it existing on the platform is for other people to use it maliciously
DrawTR··on Topic: Discord Stealer
I would understand the first definition if not for the fact that these pieces of software under the topic really don't have any legitimate usage in my opinion. Unless you're explicitly making the argument that the code is the important part (& should be kept on GitHub for the purpose of disseminating the programming methods used to create it, despite their purpose), I just think that GH is being used as a 'download link' if not an aggregator for projects like these. And, they're used for the express purpose of infecting other machines, presumably of people who are none the wiser
