Down_n_Out··on Help Iranians Fight Their Dictatorship by Providing Pied Piper's New Internet
I see and completely understand the need for having, let's say, a decentralized (from the Iranian) Internet. However, this requires resources, time and most likely money. I don't think you will be able to bypass/piggyback the Iranian Intranet or their Internet firewall, it will also make it easier for the Iranian government to track you if you try. The way I see it is trying to find your own Internet access. That sounds easy, but I can definitely see it not being the case. Maybe through satellite, maybe someone living close to a border and being able to use an Internet line from the neighboring country, there are more possibilities, I'm sure, but these come into my mind at the moment.

Let's say you manage to get independent Internet access, now you will have to find a way to get this Internet to all the people that want to use it, setting up the necessary network for that and keeping it hidden is another major task, will you risk using WiFi? If not, how will you get cable to necessary hubs? Can you trust all the people involved in setting this up or will someone inform the government because they love the current regime so much?

That being said, I'm sure that with enough money, motivation and maybe mobilization of help from people you can trust it is in theory, difficult, but doable.

Down_n_Out··on Ask HN: Which backpack do you use for work and work travel?
I'm a fan of the Millican brand [0], I own a Smith The Roll 18L one, awesome backpack.

Or Ortlieb [1], another very good brand

Down_n_Out··on Ask HN: What problems do you see worth solving in 2019-2020?
Definitely the remote work stuff, it's ridiculous how many people sit at the desk in a stuffy or crowded office while they could do the same work at home or wherever. Less cars (and less company cars needed, so potentially better pay), less commuters, less pollution. This is something that could benefit the environment, overall health and happiness of people and so much more. Just wish companies would get on board already, it's improving but a lot of countries and companies are still far behind.
Down_n_Out··on Swiss Post Suspends Drone Delivery Service After Second Crash
I really don't get the hacker news algorithms on these posts, I've submitted this interesting article 7 days ago [0] and there was no interest (which is fine, that's not the issue). I guess 7 days is the cut-off then?

Down_n_Out··on Infra and Corporate Security Guidelines?
First off, reading your intro, I'd make sure to cover yourself from any liability the lack of security as well as the lack of apparent cooperation from the company so they can't hold you responsible for any breaches or problems.

That being said, I'd look into MSB (Minimum Security Baseline), there's quite some examples out there, like this one for example [0]

Besides that SANS has a very good reading room [1] where you can find a lot more information, as well as on individual items as on general ones.

The most difficult part will definitely be to change the way of working and thinking of the management of this company. Maybe show them an example of a company that was attacked using ransomware, they were down for a month, lost millions. I will try to find the example I'm thinking of, but there's plenty to be found out there.

Down_n_Out··on Secure email provider Tutanota launches free encrypted calendar
After what seems a very long wait Tutanota now provides a free encrypted calendar along their secure email, a most requested feature. It's still beta for now but usable and I for one welcome it. I like the simplicity of the Tutanota interface but a calendar was definitely something I was sometimes missing.

Down_n_Out··on Ask HN: Has anyone tried using one of those posture-improving wearable devices?
I asked my physiotherapist this question, the answer was "no", better to do exercises to strengthen your shoulder/back muscles. Start with low-impact exercises if you're not used to it yet.

Down_n_Out··on Ask HN: DevOps Career Advice for an Oldy
I share your sentiment, my experience exactly, hence I've steered towards architecture and (team) management roles instead since there experience is highly valued over age or better yet, you get positive discrimination because of the age. The funny part is that I get to lead DevOps teams now who are surprised I know as much as they do or most of the times more than them.

Down_n_Out··on Pi-Hole – A black hole for Internet advertisements
About 3 Euro per month using a CX11 over at Hetzner[0]

Down_n_Out··on Ask HN: What is your prediction for next 10 years?
Fresh water will become a commodity that only rich people can afford in abundance.
Down_n_Out··on Pi-Hole – A black hole for Internet advertisements
I recently talked about Pi-Hole in another thread[0]: I'm using Wireguard in combination with Pi-Hole on a cheap VPS as a VPN on my iPhone, it's blazingly fast and super stable. Will be trying this on my Mac as well now. I only allow access to the console from a fixed IP-address to add whitelists when needed. Everything loads much faster, websites, even apps I feel, though it might just be wishful thinking that last one.

Down_n_Out··on Pi-Hole – A black hole for Internet advertisements
I use it also on my iPhone with WireGuard VPN, it's super easy with the app from WireGuard and it's blazingly fast, so I can definitely recommend this. Would be interested to know how you'd approach this and provide some insights if needed.

Down_n_Out··on Ask HN: What Bare-Metal Server Providers Are Available?
Hetzner (hetzner.com) has bare metals, also have an auction [0] site where you can bid on "old" bare metal servers and get some good deals, especially if it's just for some experimenting and such.

Either Hetzner or DigitalOcean. Both have handy API's which makes deploying new nodes easy (ansible, terraform, ...).

Down_n_Out··on Ask HN: How do I stop caffeine intake without losing productivity?
I went from high doses of caffeine to decaffeinated coffee and tea to drinking more water and not craving coffee or caffeine that much anymore. I also implemented the rule for myself to stop drinking caffeinated drinks after 2PM in order to have the caffeine phased out by bedtime.
Down_n_Out··on I'm leaving GitLab to help everyone work remotely
Remote work doesn't mean solitude, it means being free to work wherever, and often times whenever, you feel comfortable. It also means less commute, less cars, less pressure on the environment. If friendship/relationship/community is a worry go work in a nearby co-work space or a coffee shop or the park even, it might be a walk or bike ride away.
Down_n_Out··on Ask HN: I am a huge fraud. Career and life advice
Sounds to me like "imposter syndrome"[0]. Lots of people deal or get to deal with it during their career. The thing about generalists is that lots of companies love to get them into their workforce. Generalists are also prime candidates for moving into Solution Architecture later on.

Down_n_Out··on Necunos is selling FOSS phone today
Is this a normal price for an engineering unit, no cellular modem or SIM-card capabilities? I get they need to get some funds together but on the other hand they need to attract engineers to develop on these phones no? Genuinely curious.
Down_n_Out··on Ask HN: Advice for an aging software developer?
The search for decent software architects is not minimal. Maybe look into that? Use your writing skills to help with getting you into that trajectory. If you do it as a consultancy you can arrange your own schedule and choose where to work and on what.
Down_n_Out··on Show HN: Frame, notetaking app that can answer your questions

Down_n_Out··on Slack closes account of an Iranian user living in Canada
Iran is an amazing country and the people even more so, never ever met people more kind, giving (even when they don't have anything they give you all they've got), helpful, funny and down to earth. The fauna, flora and architecture alone is worth it, the people is just the icing on the cake.
