Down_n_Out··on Apple's Self-Destructive Qualcomm, China Strategies
I'm glad others found this post so weird, happened to follow some links and found it, felt like I really fell into the rabbithole. I thought it was translated from some other language but I'm not a native English speaker myself so.
Down_n_Out··on Ask HN: How do you handle your mental lows?
Could indeed be seasonal, there have been studies and it's a registered disorder[0] called SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), usually it lasts up until spring/summer. Light therapy might work as a non-drug cure.

Down_n_Out··on Ask HN: Whatever happened to the Internet of Things?
Exactly, it's still very much active and widely investigated, thrown money at. Large companies are developing and testing out their own IoT solutions behind closed doors. Just recently saw an invite from some university study group trying to get their project funded. They were looking into IoT for farming and hospitals. This segment is definitely growing, maybe not very public at the moment, but it's going to be soon.

You are right, you did not throw that around, you is used in plural as well. While you personally didn't throw it around it's just a statement I make to the general public, like I said, it's not all about you and/or I, it's about people, the Iranian people, not trying to generalize or single out.

I'm not attacking anyone or arguing with you in person, just trying to show that I too find evidence and not base my views on personal feelings alone. Enjoy the rest of your day as well.

But yes, of course I know Shiite military are active in the middle east. I mean, it is their region, right? I can sense militarism in your terminology. Shiite militia, sunni militia? How about state-sponsored violence in the name of oil? You would not call that ‘militia’ would you? Since you copy pasted some news articles as evidence, here is some articles that argue otherwise for you: https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/the-irrationality-of-am...,

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jun/08/tehran...

https://www.mepc.org/nuclear-terrorism-iranian-perspective

But none of these articles would be enough for you either. I will dismiss arguments that talk about Iran one-sidedly, not the evidence. You can also see more scholarly articles that talk about the complexity of the military and political affairs in the middle east. Not from an over-militarized point of view, but also from a justice, social and anthropological perspective:

https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/1035771060069611... https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.2968/065001004?src=r...

the point is, you throw Iran and nuclear and militia around like they are not connected to a people, and the best of you just reduce the situation to a state vs. people point of view. Iranians have the right, just like any other people, to defense and safety. The evidence to Iran being a terrorist state does not exist and what you sent me is a list of politically motivated accusations. The evidence for Iran meddling in the region, yes. I think there is plenty of that, and yes, that’s bad, as long as we don’t compare it to other countries around the world that do a million times worse but are left alone because they are western allies. I don’t think I have to convince anyone about the chaos Western intervention has created in the region. Iran is evil because it does not comply to bullying. O I hope you can also find the time for nuancing your view.

I'm asking evidence of people claiming things without any proof. And yes, I can find my own evidence, hence my question. How is your comment any relevant?

> That is widely agree upon largely due to Iran's shipment of weapons and financing of external militant groups actively engaged in various conflicts.

Where is your proof on this? Where is all of the proof on any of the things claimed about Iran? Just like there were mass destructive weapons in Irak?? Sure, we know how that turned out. It's time for big ol' USA to just stop meddling in affairs it has no business in. They just want to get their hands on all the oil in the world so they can play the boss, and it most likely is not going to stop there either, next it's water, the market, and so on. The USA is just a big bully, it's their way or not at all. And Europe is like the bully's accomplice, too scared to stand up so just joins along in the bullying. Pathetic, more more more, it's always more they want. Protecting the peace, ha, joke. And while we are at it, let's forgive Saudi Arabia for obviously brutally murdering a journalist, afterall, they just invested millions on some of our weapons.

Farce.

Down_n_Out··on Thieves boosting signal from key fobs inside homes to steal vehicles
Nothing new, has been going on for a while now. Market is already providing your own "cage of Faraday[0]" for your fob. [0]https://www.amazon.com/faraday-cage-key-fob/s?page=1&rh=i%3A...

Does something like this exist in Europe? Free trading would be a dream. Paying 7,5 EUR to 15 EUR or more for each transaction gets old quick.

Free: Or paying a very little amount compared with what is considered the norm.

Down_n_Out··on Japan Is Giving Away 8M Abandoned Houses
> If you live in Japan but don't look Japanese you never really feel welcomed as a Japanese.

That goes for a lot of countries, especially if your skin color is different as well as your accent, language and whatnot. Heck, even when you are born in a country where you are not the same skin color as the majority you can feel not welcome. So, it's kind of a generalization to say that only about Japan.

Down_n_Out··on Ask HN: Which domain registrar and hosting provider do you prefer?
I use Route53 from AWS for DNS, that way I can always move around regarding hosting and have full access to the records, I mostly use Hetzner, AWS and DigitalOcean for hosting. Registrar is Gandi at the moment, but might move if I find a decent replacement.
Down_n_Out··on Ditching the MacBook Pro for a MacBook Air
I've ditched the laptops of Apple for the new Mac Mini, upgraded the ram myself to save on cost and it was not too hard to do. Now I'm running an I5 with 32Gb ram. Nice little machine. As a travel buddy I'm using a Lenovo X280 with Linux on it, light, nice enough keyboard, just works and the two OS can work together quite well.
Down_n_Out··on Ask HN: Remote workers – What are the issues you are facing?
Finding a position that will allow remote work. Problem is that I'm not a developer but an architect, over 40 and I work freelance. Apparently not a good combination for remote work according to many (possible) employers/clients.
Down_n_Out··on Ask HN: How did you get rid of your allergies?
I've got a family member having success with having a simple air purification system in the house (with HEPA filter). It made a huge difference, sleeping better, more alert. It doesn't help with the day to day when outside, still uses medication for that. But at least inside, life is a lot easier.
Down_n_Out··on Why Sleep Apnea Patients Rely on a CPAP Machine Hacker
The way I got it explained was that it's the heart that can't handle the stress the lack of repeatedly not getting enough oxygen causes. The damage it has done to my heart before I got diagnosed is also not reversible, the goal is to not let it get worse, stay healthy, etc. I've been a patient for over 8 years, lost a lot of weight, didn't help, so for me it's imperative that I can see my own data and grasp what is going on. As to answer your question, yes and no, you don't really wake up but your deep sleep gets interrupted which causes you never to feel rested, especially if you have a severe case, like more than 30 AHI per hour (like me).
Down_n_Out··on Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 iOS app
As others have replied already, it does, depending on which solution you pick out of the list. I'm a happy user of this app, no affiliation at all in case someone was wondering.
Down_n_Out··on Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 iOS app
On IOS there's also DNSCloak[0], which goes even further and has the option to choose for ad-filtering (eg, via PiHole) in combination with no-logging and using 1.1.1.1 as DNS.

Down_n_Out··on 2018 Mac Mini Review
I've been an avid Apple user and supporter for many years, preached about the stability and the superior (tongue in cheek) hardware. I was waiting for a decent replacement for an ageing mini, but seriously Apple, at these prices?? It's insane. I've made up my mind after I saw the Apple event and reading/following the news of them hiding their sales numbers from now on [0].

I've switched over to Linux as my main desktop completely. While I've been using Windows for years, Windows 10 is just not doing it for me, even with WSL, it just feels limited and unpolished. Anyway, rant over. [0] https://www.marketwatch.com/story/when-the-going-gets-tough-...

Down_n_Out··on Ask HN: Which tools and methods do you use to check for malware on your machine?
I use Qubes OS [0] and keep things strictly separated to minimize damage as much as possible. Besides that be careful what I download or visit online and use the standard tools if by chance I would think the system is compromised.

Down_n_Out··on Ask HN: What would you do with a lot of spare compute hardware?
Experiment with free versions of enterprise software? For example Nutanix [0] or setup a Openshift/OKD cluster [1]. Install a Hypervisor [2][3] and start rolling out virtual machines for smaller projects, use a devops approach automating everything with Ansible for example (Infrastructure as Code)... And many more possibilities, or donate the hardware to me so I can use it to do all this ;)

If you happen to have a Synology storage device you could also look into their Drive[0] solution. Offers about the same features as Dropbox.

Down_n_Out··on Ask HN: Why is remote work not mainstream in 2018?
I would love to work remote, unfortunately my country is just beginning to have people work from home 1 to 2 days a week if their "title" allows for it. As an architect I could do all my work remote, even meetings. But it's, as was already mentioned, a big cultural change, many companies also don't "trust" their employees. They come up with the excuse that people will be doing non-work related chores at home (washing dishes, laundry, etc...) while they should be focusing on work. They expect you to sit 8h at your desk at home. If mentalities don't change at the top it's not going to trickle down.
