DoubleCribble··on 7.1 magnitude earthquake strikes Southern California
There's also a noticeable difference in waves. Some quakes hit you with a lateral motion (which, I presume magnifies any possible liquefaction). Some hit with a rolling motion (which really wreaks havoc on masonry). And some hit you with both (those are the ones where you hope the building doesn't collapse on you).
DoubleCribble··on Why did moving the mouse cursor cause Windows 95 to run more quickly?
I find the Progress bar is usually about as accurate as the Time Remaining calculation. Both are better than nothing but more of a fiction than reality.
DoubleCribble··on Germany records hottest June temperature
You sure about that? It seems like most of the hottest European summers on record are all very recent. [0]

Interestingly, your chosen example does share some correlation with the rise in temperature. [1]

DoubleCribble··on Snowden's talk at Bitcoin 2019 conference [video]
They know _exactly_ where he is. Putin keeps him protected for shits & giggles.
DoubleCribble··on Ask HN: What do you do with your Raspberry Pi?
It can be really useful for determining the microclimate. The landscaping & gardens in your yard can live or die from it.
DoubleCribble··on The cost of raising a child in America has soared (2018)
If your hospital is like many/most of all US hospitals despite only one hospital room, only one set of nurses and doctors, only one mother... you get to pay the full price of delivery charges for each baby!

They should be required to hang a sign outside L&D, "Half a womb still pays for the full room." just so you don't have a(nother) heart attack when the bill arrives in the mail.

DoubleCribble··on To be great, be good repeatably
Possibly. But the path to greatness is largely dependent upon how you try to get there. "Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect." - Vince Lombardi Jr.
DoubleCribble··on The Day the Music Burned
As a counterpoint, here are the B-sides from that British quartet of yesteryear, most of which were only released as singles (until the discographies were published decades later). Some of these are better than the A-sides. YMMV.

P.S. I Love You, Ask Me Why, Thank You Girl, I'll Get You, This Boy, You Can't Do That, Things We Said Today, She's a Woman, Yes It Is, I'm Down, Day Tripper, Rain, Yellow Submarine, Penny Lane, Baby You're A Rich Man, I Am the Walrus, The Inner Light, Revolution, Don't Let Me Down, Old Brown Shoe, Come Together, You Know My Name

DoubleCribble··on The Modern Bicycle and Its Accessories (1898) [pdf]
I can't imagine gas powered bike lamps were great to ride around with but the ones they replaced (soot!, smoke!, danger!) must've been even more exciting.
DoubleCribble··on Special report: Profiting from prison
Undeniably, yes, it costs more to treat a patient on a per/day basis.

US Federal inmates cost ~$38,000 per year or ~$107/day. (approx based on previous years' info) [0] Just the ambulance ride alone is going cost much more than that. Add in hospital admission and treatment for all those nasty needle shared diseases and maybe an organ failure or two (livers can only put up with so much abuse) and the cost skyrockets.

DoubleCribble··on Special report: Profiting from prison
I'll give you a good reason, healthcare costs. You think all that life saving medical care after an overdose is free or cheap? It's the same reason why motorcycle helmets are required by the government in many states. The public doesn't want to pay for the un/under-insured comatose rider's prolonged stay in the hospital after an accident.
DoubleCribble··on I’m not saving ninety percent of my income for myself
This reminds me of the generation that were kids during the Great Depression. The trauma of food scarcity & poverty often resulted in extreme forms of frugality that lasted for the rest of their lives. It wouldn't surprise me if this author also saves/reuses food plastic wrap, scraps of aluminum foil & rinsed out plastic sandwich bags as my own grandmother did.
DoubleCribble··on Schools Are Deploying Digital Surveillance Systems
I disagree. The lesson here is: you teach the students how to protect their anonymity. For example, would you ever sign your name to some rude graffiti/foul language you drew in the boys/girls bathroom stall at school? Of course not! Why is online any different?

DoubleCribble··on The SaaS Opportunity of Unbundling Excel
Google Sheets lets you download the workbook as an Excel file which can be automatically saved to a Google Drive folder. Hourly (?), daily, weekly, monthly snapshots of a shared workbook can all be easily scripted and stored for later retrieval. It eliminates any confusion over which is the latest workbook because the Sheets version is always the most up-to-date.
DoubleCribble··on This Old House: The Rare Home-Improvement Show That Spotlights Skilled Workers
Had TOH offered the Generation Next apprenticeships 20+ years ago, I would have jumped at the opportunity to spend a few months working alongside these master craftsmen. They've been a great example of the skill and hard work it takes to do things the right way and turn a busted old house into a beautiful home.
DoubleCribble··on I.M. Pei has died
If you want to see the most impressive candidate for an IRL Bond villain HQ, I nominate Mr. Pei's Miho Museum [0]. The art is pretty good for a private collection, but the real gem is the building/compound itself. It's incredible.

DoubleCribble··on A Man Who’s Going to Save Your Neighborhood Grocery Store
You'll probably want to avoid a stop at Stew Leonard's[0] in Norwalk, CT then. Ol' Stew pioneered the concept back in the 60's and it's definitely not for the short on time. The whole store is full of kitschy displays, animatronics, a petting zoo for the kids!, free samples, etc. etc.

But then again, it's the best grocery store to visit if you're a kid (or a kid at heart) and people make it a point to visit from across the country whenever they are in the area.

DoubleCribble··on Rivian 2021 Electric SUV
My bad. It was Ford that just swooped in!
DoubleCribble··on After a $14B Upgrade, New Orleans’ Levees Are Sinking
A LOT of the forest that burned in the CA Camp fire isn't going to come back. Thanks to warming winters, the pine bark beetles are making their way up the Sierras and laying waste to entire mountains of pine trees. The folks who want to live in the burned out areas will now likely be surrounded by chaparral instead of pine forest.
DoubleCribble··on The State of American Trade Schools
Indeed. The minimum skill required to find long-term employment becomes a much higher standard. Entry-level office jobs are going to vanish before most people realize. Many low level processes that are currently done by clerks/bookkeepers/analysts will be replaced by scripts.
DoubleCribble··on We Built a Facial Recognition Machine for $60
How long until we see this as a monetized SaaS? (ed note: that's Stalking as a Service)
DoubleCribble··on Rivian 2021 Electric SUV
Agreed. Unless GM swoops in and rebrands it as the Cadillac SUV.
DoubleCribble··on Stop using poison on your lawn
It may start off that way, but after a few years, that crabgrass may decline or die off entirely due to competition from native species. Around these parts, if you let the local squirrels have at it, you may wind up with a forest instead!
DoubleCribble··on B.C. introduces law to require cars, trucks sold by 2040 be zero emission
Don't forget the 4 independent motors!

I predict the term "quad" will have a completely different meaning for off-road enthusiasts in 2040.

DoubleCribble··on Income-sharing agreements let students trade future earnings for investment
Having worked at charter schools... I can tell you that each state runs their charter program a little differently, but generally teachers at charter schools are not union represented. Each school charter is issued independently of any others and the school design can vary dramatically from one charter to the next, which is actually the point. Some charter schools have long days. Some go year round. Some focus on at-risk youth. Some focus on alternative pedagogy... etc, etc.
DoubleCribble··on Income-sharing agreements let students trade future earnings for investment
Or to offer programs and incentives that the unions won't agree to such as: longer academic year, longer school day, merit pay, on-call duty, at-home visits, non-traditional facility, non-traditional pedagogy, poor performance termination, etc...
DoubleCribble··on Sweden Wants to Revive Europe’s Overnight Trains
As of 25 years ago this was THE way for a backpacker with a Eurail pass to see the continent during the summer. The cheap cars (ie 6 beds/room) were basically a youth hostel on rails. It was a fantastic way to meet other travelers and explore new cities together.
DoubleCribble··on The World’s Cheapest Hospital Has to Get Even Cheaper
Where does it discuss long-term outcomes in TFA? Not all transmissible disease manifests within 30 days.
