DoubleCluster··on Why MongoDB is a bad choice for storing our scraped data
Just a plain old RDMS?
DoubleCluster··on Show HN: we like to work from coffee shops, so we made this
Someone should order some for the guys in the ISS.
DoubleCluster··on Rethinking the VLC’s mirrors infrastructure
Couldn't they just use a CDN?
DoubleCluster··on REST lesson learned: Avoid hackable URLs
You should be glad your urls are so intuitive that they are easily hackable. Keep it that way and don't change them (breaking stuff is bad). Nobody really ever follows links with REST anyway. That idea is nice in theory but it's just too much work in practice.
DoubleCluster··on Averaged-sized woman hugging a fashion model
NSFW!
DoubleCluster··on Please use git pull --rebase
It does NOT keep history accurate. You have absolutely no guarantee that all rebased commits work as intended or can even be built. The only thing that can be rebased safely is a single commit, for the rest you should learn to live with a messy history. It doesn't really matter anyway as long as you have procedures to prevent criss-cross merges.
DoubleCluster··on Introducing the Europe Region, Now Available in Public Beta
Sorry, already running on EC2 by now...
DoubleCluster··on Shodan: The scariest search engine on the Internet
I'm not sure the ISS has enough delta-v to get back down quickly. Lowering the orbit enough so that it will fall down in a few weeks is probably possible.
DoubleCluster··on Redis as the primary data store
How much does maintaining this infrastructure cost? I'd guess that spending a bit more on (virtual) hardware would have been a much cheaper solution. Only when the service proves to be popular and you want to save money you should invest in an architecture like this.
DoubleCluster··on The Jellyfish Entrepreneur
Do you have any idea in what amounts jellyfish usually appear? Probably the weather changed and they moved off, or died due to changing seasons etc.
DoubleCluster··on Airline to charge overweight passengers more
I'd think that with the extra money you're paying they could offer you more legroom. I'd have no trouble with paying more if I'm taking up more weight and space.
DoubleCluster··on A robotic dragonfly with a wingspan of 63 cm
It's the future! I think that it would be great for agility, and perhaps to mimic insects so the army can use them covertly.
DoubleCluster··on Dashing - A dashboard framework
Exceptionally handsome if you like Windows 8 perhaps. I don't like the big rectangles with bright colors. A good dashboard should be almost invisible until something important happens.
DoubleCluster··on Achron, time shifting RTS
The idea is nice, the "pathfinding" is broken enough for the game to be unplayable. Seriously, they just go directly towards their goal and get stuck everywhere.
DoubleCluster··on Announcing Openbeta
> Openbeta from Betaworks (a new medium company)

This looks like a placeholder for a company/productname/tagline. Could not be any more bland.

DoubleCluster··on Realistic digital screen characters are finally here
Still deep in the uncanny valley in my opinion.
DoubleCluster··on Finnish HTML5 house SC5 pays salary and accepts payments as Bitcoins
Good PR, but why would anyone want to get part of their salary paid in bitcoins? You get the disadvantages of both.
DoubleCluster··on Faker.js - generate massive amounts of fake data in the browser and Node.js
What's the use case for this? To annoy spammers?
DoubleCluster··on Show HN: Graphing tool to figure out which EC2 configuration is cheapest for you
Certainly interesting. It looks like a 1 year medium is a good bet if you're unsure how long you'll need the instance but it's probably more than 6 months.
DoubleCluster··on RAMCloud - All Your Storage in DRAM
The idea is not that weird. Lots of applications run from RAM most of the time, needing long cache warmups before performing well. If you keep your entire storage in RAM this isn't necessary, and you can do away with the caching layer.
DoubleCluster··on 75% of a human skull replaced with 3D-printed material
Sadly the material is not adamantium.
DoubleCluster··on RC4 is kind of broken in TLS
This seems like an excellent solution.

edit: I've just noticed that this is something someone with no experience in crypto would say. Sometimes things actually get worse with randomization, for example when there is a flaw that will always allow bytes 160 and 161 to be revealed. If the position of the cookie is randomized it will fully be revealed instead of possibly just two bytes. Before actually implementing this someone with a few crypto publications should take a look at it ;)

DoubleCluster··on No Thanks, We're Using Heroku
Home-grown dashboard. Works fine for now. It was quite a lot of work to build it but the code turned out nice and concise and I learned a lot in the process.
DoubleCluster··on No Thanks, We're Using Heroku
Would anyone actually do that? I run stuff on AWS using their excellent Java SDK and I'm quite happy about the flexibility that brings me.
DoubleCluster··on No Thanks, We're Using Heroku
> We created open-source Puppet modules that provide compatibility with Heroku’s cedar stack (process management, dependency management, concurrency)

If I had a Heroku app but wanted to move to EC2 that'd be great. The rest of the stuff doesn't seem that interesting.

DoubleCluster··on PHP is the right tool for the job (for all the wrong reasons)
Exactly. I detest PHP, but I've used it to quickly build a sign-up website for an event. If you pair PHP with an interface library like Bootstrap and an ORM like Paris/Idiorm you can have something up and running cheaply and quickly. Is it maintainable? No, but that's not important in this case.

edit: let me clarify, I don't assert that ALL php code is unmaintainable, just the quick site I built. Though if you're in the mood to argue: statically typed languages are infinitely more maintainable than dynamically typed ones in my opinion.

DoubleCluster··on The Rise Of The Artist
The creativity comes in when you need to decide on the most efficient way to do something. And you are always creating something from scratch, otherwise you could just reuse the existing solution.
DoubleCluster··on Amazon.com was down
Works for me (from Europe). Must be the troubled US-East-1 region or the problem has been fixed already.
DoubleCluster··on Launchrock for error pages
Nobody is going to register without knowing what they are registering for...
DoubleCluster··on Oreo Separator Machine [video]
Heh, funny. If this is an advertisement I don't mind at all.
