Doubl··on Humans Interbred with Four Extinct Hominin Species, Research Finds
I thought that unlike what was previously thought, there are no known examples of ring species.
Doubl··on Americans' plastic recycling is dumped in landfills
Do they take plastic?

The Catholic Church policy on condoms was blamed for the high rates of HIV in Africa and yet if you looked at the stats, the countries where protestantism was more predominant than Catholicism had higher rates and vice versa. Not claiming there was any causation there but the original allegation had no basis. If someone is going to flout church teaching on sex outside marriage they are hardly going to be worried about flouting it by using a condom.
Doubl··on Alibaba partner announces 16 core RISC-V chip
Unless you are not an American and many people aren't. In which case anything goes.
Doubl··on Reddit AMA: I'm a Former Amazon Fulfillment Center Employee
Greenspan, in his testimony, then suggests technological change and international competition as possible reasons for worker insecurity, before noting that "suppressed wage cost growth as a consequence of job insecurity can be carried only so far. At some point, the tradeoff of subdued wage growth for job security has to come to an end. In other words, the relatively modest wage gains we have experienced are a temporary rather than a lasting phenomenon because there is a limit to the value of additional job security people are willing to acquire in exchange for lesser increases in living standards.

This reminds me of the holy Grail (for me anyway) of a file containing its own hash
Doubl··on Don't donate canned goods to food banks (2017)
In the UK, company directors have also vastly outpaced everyone else in earnings growth since the '80s. Their compensation is decided by a remuneration committee. The remuneration committees are composed of company directors from other companies to give them "independence", shareholders play no part in the process. It's a you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours thing. Why don't the shareholders object? Because the shareholders are mostly funds who similarly have directors.
Doubl··on Eastgate Centre, Harare
What can they do in those situations I wonder?
Doubl··on Eastgate Centre, Harare
Maybe the good stuff we see surviving is just survival bias? I know that in southern Portugal, today, they have marble floors and keep the shutters closed all day, maybe with Windows open for circulation. Houses are nice and cool
Doubl··on Prenda Law porn-troll saga ends with prison for founder
This guy got fewer years than the other guy because he helped get the other guy convicted. It just seems wrong, in principle, that the law rewards that sort of behaviour. That's apart from the problems with trusting such self serving testimony.
Doubl··on The Fight for the Future of YouTube
Have you seen bad content and now know that you've become a worse person? How are you worse now? If you haven't watched that sort of content then how do you know it would make you a worse person if you did? It sounds silly to me.
Doubl··on The most effective way to tackle climate change? Plant a trillion trees
Cool, that's 167 per person alive and our family of 5 already planted 1500 over a decade ago. I am awesome.
Doubl··on Is this Paypal experience customary?
I have to say that I have been lucky with PayPal so far and I have a PayPal account for a long time. I only use it as a buyer though. I really like it when a website has a PayPal option so I don't have to give yet another site my card numbers including the security number on the back. I think that maybe twice over the years I have needed to get a refund and apart from the process being a bit drawn out I had no problem. But then the unhappy stories are usually from vendors so maybe my experience is nothing special
Doubl··on Is this Paypal experience customary?
Yes I (in eu) only recently added 2FA and I'm using Google authenticator
Doubl··on How e-commerce sites manipulate people into buying things
Years ago in the UK, the prices were commonly, say, £9 19s 11d instead of £10, that is a discount of 1/240 of a pound

Doubl··on What Happens After Amazon’s Domination Is Complete? Its Bookstore Offers Clues
I don't climb, but oh yeah, that's a no brainer all right. Unless they can fix this then buying direct from the manufacturer has to be the only safe way. Otherwise you have to trust a retailer who even if trustworthy, has to trust a wholesaler.
Doubl··on What Happens After Amazon’s Domination Is Complete? Its Bookstore Offers Clues
There is plenty of domination in capitalism, monopolies, cartels, oligopolies, political influence. Once you get to a certain size you become too big to fail and the government is then in your pocket. The current trade war with China is probably being fought in the interests of big business rather than the consumer
Doubl··on The Rise and Fall of Visual Basic
The people still developing in vb6 are a pretty relaxed lot these days, no one worries any more that the apps won't run in windows, they will, forever. It's still possible to get new activex components for skinning or whatever and if all else fails there's always interops with .net. Meanwhile the vb6 ide is lightning quick, designed as it was back in win 95 days, and with a couple of add ons can be very up to date.
Doubl··on The Rise and Fall of Visual Basic
Vb6 is still out there being developed with, on Windows 10. Active community at vbforums
Doubl··on Why can't computers boot instantly? (2013)
Hibernate is my preferred option when going off the computer but Windows doesn't offer it out of the box and more. You have to tweak settings. Why is that I wonder?

Doubl··on Show HN: A job board for companies fighting ageism in tech
If age discrimination is illegal should not the age profile of companies be tracked the same way race and gender are, at least I think they are.

Apparently by the age the average person catches the measles naturally, in a society where there is herd immunity because of vaccination, they are unlikely to become too ill. So it's not so risky not vaccinating your child so long as everyone else does it. But if nobody does it then the average age of infection goes down and these infections are then much more serious
Doubl··on Things I learnt the hard way in thirty years of software development
I don't see much wrong with true or false as arguments. Beats having two functions instead of one which is his preference.
Doubl··on R.T. Russell's Z80 BBC Basic Is Now Open Source
I agree with you that my comment was a bit cringeworthy, but at the same time, unlike for gay people where there are any number of well known successful people, I was unaware of any successful transgender people. They only ever seen to get a mention in connection with some controversy over gender reassignment or conflict with feminists.
Doubl··on R.T. Russell's Z80 BBC Basic Is Now Open Source
I couldn't understand what you meant by wasn't Sophie then so I looked her up. She's a transgender woman. Transgender people are getting it in the neck a bit at the moment, it's nice to have an example of such an impressive person who is one.
